Politicians may come and go, tyrants may rise and fall but the creations of beauty and faith in the future remain to inspire us all. Both the great and the small who worked on the cathedrals of Europe, adding to them their greater or lesser piece, perhaps aspired to nothing more than that, as unknown and as unnamed as they may themselves might be to future generations hoped perhaps that future men would marvel at what their toil and commitment had been able to wrought amd create from mere stone.

The opening would have been a great free party for the public.

He’s a convicted felon! France could have kept him out cause he isn’t supposed to travel out of the country.
That being said, I was so upset when Notre Dame caught fire, but so happy to contribute to her rebirth.

The desperation by the bishop emeritus to justify why the Pope is not attending is pathetic, the most important Catholic cathedral in France and Pope refuses to attend!

Rubbish. The Roman Pontiff is represented by the Archbishop, a prince of the Church.
Prince William is there to represent the King of England, isnt he?
      Duh.

@ a prince of the church? What backwards country are you from? And what has the fact of Prince William attending relevant ? Btw, he’s Anglican.

The Pope is very old and frail. He doesn't need to be there and take the limelight away from France and the people who worked so hard to rebuild it

@ have you not noticed his travels around the world recently? He seems quite robust to travel much further than Rome to Paris. They invited Trump, talk about taking the limelight away. Your arguments / excuses are just as lame as that Archbishop.

It is beautiful but much too bright !!! The patina of the centuries is lost to the same history it once embodied.
Viollet-le-Duc also performed a major restoration completed in 1864, which changed much of its character from the medieval incarnation that this panel so romantically and repeatedly references. Between the French Revolution until the early 19th century the cathedral was in pretty bad shape. It has shown its resilience more than landmarks much younger and newer.
    Vive la République !

The Light of the World! It would originally have been painted in bright colours depicting Biblical stories. I really appreciate the light pouring in. I noticed in the documentary showing President Macron touring the Church, that the light coming through the stained glass windows reflected on the pillars and walls, which gave a muted effect of those former murals. I hope future sight seers will observe this lovely effect and rejoice in it’s beauty!🙏🏻🇦🇺🇦🇺👋Edited to add that I have never had the pleasure of seeing Notre-Dame except in photographs or film and at my age I think it unlikely that I ever will, something I regret deeply. My admiration and congratulations to all the artisans and general workers for their work on this great endeavour.👏👏👏👍

The Pope is going to Corsica because he was invited by his buddy, a Cardinal he himself appointed!
This Pope is not very popular in France and not going to Paris when the American president-elect is traveling is not going to help his popularity rating!
We regret so much Benedict XVI and John Paul II

Maybe he wasn’t center of attention, but when he got in the cathedral and reached his chair, all the smartphones stared at him….!! 😅
