Martin Sheen's real name is Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estevez and Charlie's real name is Carlos Irwin Estevez. I remember the first time I heard the real Estevez names, it became a thing when the younger son Emilio Estevez kept his real name and stamped himself as a recognized name. And the question was, how tf are Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez full brothers? I still have a hard time looking at Martin and Charlie Sheen and seeing Ramón and Carlos, the father cultivated such an Anglo middle America persona and his son filled right in after him. It's interesting. A lot of Greek actors chopped off the end of/shortened their surnames. Like Jennifer Aniston's actor father was the one who changed his name from Yiannis Anitios Anasstassakis to John Aniston. I support people keeping their ethnic names. People say no one can pronounce it but to that I say, that's not true, and the people who can't just need to try a few times and they'll get it. It's not that hard. Really. A tiny amount of effort and the ability to admit you can't read something in order to learn how to read it. If you can't manage that, I'd suggest therapy lol.
Greek names are really long usually so I guess for media purposes you want the name to easily roll off the tongue. But yeah I agree with you. People will learn to pronounce it correctly.
The whole 'people won't be able to pronounce it' is so dumb. My name is Rachel and I still get people trying to call me Rochelle, Raquel, etc. My mom's name is Lois and people say "Luis? Louise?" ... I admire people who stand up for their cultures & others, full stop. When culture has been forcibly stomped out of you, like in the case of Native Americans & African-Americans in the US, does it make sense to be peaceful when your aggressors are not? I admire all non-violent movements & people who remain non-violent in the face of opression, but non-violent leaders of movements are often killed or murdered by the state, mobs, or vigilantes. I see both sides. It's great to be peaceful, & many people are, but it doesn't work every time, especially when you are the minority against a powerful and/or violent majority. The current treatment of Ukrainians and Afro-Ukranians is another example. Would you recommend "peace" to them? Do you feel differently about them vs others, and why?

For those saying that "everyone's names are ethnic" or "he's still white, how was he stereotyped?" This is how America saw things back then. You know how everyone likes to roast the 20s-50s on how everything was bigoted towards women, minorities, and people with mental illnesses? That did indeed happen, however, white men didn't exactly pat each other on the back either. Men of Italian backgrounds were often stereotyped/discriminated as s3xual deviants that preyed on young innocent girls until TV and movies started portraying them in a more sympathetic light. This is kinda how the greaser bad boy x pure perfect schoolgirl became a troupe. The Irish were seen as drunk pagans that "wanted" to corrupt the Christian lifestyle of America. Remember that scene in Back to the Future where Biff called George an "Irish bug"? That was a real derogatory term towards offspring of Irish immigrants. German used to be the 3rd language of America until WW1 came about. People then saw German-American citizens as "racist barbarians who were still loyal to the Kaiser." And yes, that statement is ironic. See, America? You've always been like this.
It's crazy how tv has such a powerful impact.
