  • 10 mile hike featuring runway dodging, a big hill and a weird ruined church - and spicy chicken dinner in the woods - cooked in my inimitable style! 😀
    This was a long hard hike through the countryside of Dorset in Southern England, climbing up Melbury Beacon (263m/863ft) for amazing views, visiting villages with a ruined church, and a fish breeding pond dating back to the Middle Ages. Finished with a hot spicy chicken cookup in the woods on my trusty Trangia stove. This was a challenging walk, due to the very hilly countryside, but a really great day out.

      Thanks Mark. It was a great day out. A good challenge for me but so enjoyable. Really does me good to be outside and challenge this old body! Can’t wait to get out on another one like this again. I’m planning some future hilly day hikes now, a bit further away so will wait until days get a little longer.
      Happy New Year mate! I’m determined to make this best one yet!! 👍

    That was quite a nice little perambulation there, Mark! The ups and downs were striking. I don't think of southern England as having a lot of mountains, but some of those hills were STEEP and just a lot of elevation gain and loss on the trails. I'd never heard of a stew pond before. That's a cool bit of knowledge. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us!

      Hey Darian! Didn’t realise you were still around over here. Yeah it is pretty hilly in that area, which is why I’ve been enjoying exploring it over the the past year. It’s only less than an hours drive from me so just next door really. You’re right, there’s no mountains down here unfortunately. Closest we’ve got to anything a bit more wild are the moors - Dartmoor is about 3 hrs drive.
      I didn’t know about Stew Ponds before I started researching for this walk. I’m enjoying spending time before my walks understanding more about what I’m going to see. It’s too easy to walk past stuff and not realise it’s story.
      Your IG feed keeps getting better and better mate. I’m getting a real feel for that area you’re in and am very impressed by your carving skills!

      @@hikingwithrosy yeah, and with all that history around you, a bit of research would enrich the journey quite a lot, I imagine? Hey, have you ever watched Detectorists? My wife and I are re-watching it right now, and it's a wonderful show. They spend a lot of the show just roaming the countryside of England. Makes me want to start planning that England trip again. 🍻

      Thanks Andy! I think it makes it more interesting for me (and you!) when I do some research before I go out on a walk so I know a bit more about what I’m looking at. Didn’t do history at school so I’m learning it now by going on walks! 😄👍

      @Mark - Baldy Goes Walking you’re a poet and I didn’t know it! 😄
      Yeah, that makes sense about the fish, when you don’t have a freezer then keep ‘em alive in a pond! Must go out and buy a tropical fish tank! 🐠
      That Compton Abbas village is called that coz the land was originally owned by Shaftesbury Abbey so may well be a direct connection there to the stew pond.
      Thanks for your thoughts as always mate! 😊👍

      Yeah food came out good! I do like getting out into more hilly countryside where you can see for miles. The New Forest is great for woods but it’s mostly fairly flat.
      I’m starting planning some hilly walks a bit further North later in the year - if we’re ever allowed out again!
