I've searched dozens of times on RUclips for great hand tools like this, for their smooth, quiet operation. And Almost nothing ever shows up because Google sucks at search (yeah, the irony burns). This video is pure gold.
That is such an awesome machine! I own a hand cranked grinder and a NOS hand drill from Ixion. Incredible quality! Wish to own one of those some day.. Great job restoring it. Have fun using it!
Nice work! I'd say this is probably the coolest tool you have because of how rare it is and you made sure it'll serve you well for a long time. Always take care of your tools 😉 good job
I am not sure I understand, is vertical movement directly proportional to number of turns, or it can go slower or faster vertically? I surely did not expect it to drill the 10mm steel hole.!
Hey, I also didn’t take it apart because it works so well and I was afraid I wouldn‘t get the mechanism back together again properly :) So I don’t entirely understand how it is done internally. As long as there is no resistance, the turning moves the spindle downwards as you say. When the drill meets the work piece, the spindle somehow disengages from the forward motion and lifts up the cast iron weight at the top. The spindle is then turning and the downward pressure is applied by the weight. The knob on the side works as a break and controls the amount of forward motion when the drill is engaged. It‘s a very smart design and it works really well and more or less effortlessly even with thick pieces of steel.

Gruß Tino Watch the video for the third time - I ´ll never understand how this drillpress really works. Can you change the crank for different gears? Greetings Tino
Yes, it's not entirely clear to me what is happening inside the spindle either. I could not find any drawings or anything. But since it's working so well, I didn't dare to take it apart and risk breaking something. The two crank positions are for different speeds, yes.
Thanks! I’m not sure anymore. If you have one yourself, I think it is best to open it up and buy springs as similar as possible to the original ones. I couldn’t find any that were quite as stiff as the old ones.
Great restoration video! I just got one of these for restoration and the chuck springs are garbage. Can you tell me where you got the chuck springs from?
They were 4mm by 22mm with a wire thickness of 0.5mm. If I had to do it again, I would try to get a slightly thicker wire so that they are stiffer. It works ok with those, though.
Nice video! I also saw this machine in one of StavrosGakos videos and also in your video. I´ve been looking for one of these for 1 - 2 years perhaps.. Today I found one in Ebay and bought it. Still have to pick it up, but it seems in a great state according to the pictures... It´s from Metabo though and I agree; its absolut hard to find any information about his crank drill presses.. I´m very curious, how this one will work out :-) greetings, ruben
An amazing drill, you're luky. Ok, a motor need less physical force but this one is autonomous, no problem with "too much power" on some delicate things. Fun ! Just a depth stop is missing to be perfect :p
hello, i have the same. but the disc you clean (at minute 10.30) is completely stuck and does not move. like the bolt you see above at minute 10.18/10.20 what is the disassembly sequence? What do you suggest? also the grease cap (which you can see at 0.40 seconds), mine is a system stauffer 2, it was screwed in so much that it covered the nut (I can't unscrew it manually....) I found the original cap and the part that screws on on eBay. but the cost is very high with shipping. the cap you use (3) can be found on the market... Can you provide me with the model? thank you
Hey, thanks for your interest in my video and congratulations for getting your own machine. The metal disk on top sits on an conical shaft. If it doesn‘t spin then the shaft must somehow be stuck. Unfortunately I cannot tell you the exact part number of the grease cup. There is another video where someone takes the machine further apart. Maybe this helps: m.ruclips.net/video/bLQAAz1Pvp8/видео.html&pp=ygUeTWFudWFsIGRyaWxsIHByZXNzIHJlc3RvcmF0aW9u I hope you get it to work again!
Hola! Gracias por el vídeo. Tengo uno igual pero le falta el muelle del mecanismo de freno. ¿Cómo es la zapatilla que hace frenar el eje? ¿De qué material es? ¿Crees que me valdrá un trozo de goma? Gracias
I've always wanted one of these be never able to find one when I have the money Nice job cleaning it up it looks great!! Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up

It's sad that you don't see machines like this built anymore

Tons on Ebay right now
Amazing tool! Congrats for taking it back to service! ❤👍🏻
Thanks for watching!

Thanks! It‘s a really great machine. Much more precise than anything I had before.
Seeing vintage is always satisfying and heart touching ❤️👍..

good job, more a maintenance than a restoration
Yes, true :)
Dziękuję serdecznie za filmik.
Mam taką samą i teraz wiem jak ją wyczyścić.
Zdrowia i powodzenia życzę.
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoy your machine!
Thanks for showing this. Got one too! Had to repaint the body though, but they are awesome!
You’re lucky, they are great! It’s one of the most satisfying tools I have.
Fantastic work, dude! Nicely done! 😃
You don't need to make it new again to make it work beautifully. 😉
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks! You stay safe with your familiy, too!
This drill is too good, I love it's sound. I used to have smaller hand drill while I was kid. You brought many memories back.
Yes, it’s a really nice tool.
Nice sympathetic resto'....Give my eye teeth to own one of these
Man its beautiful.

_Очень аккуратная, чистая и полезная работа._
_Спасибо мастеру._
They are brilliant for tapping holes too. the only slight downside is it tends to lift the work piece when you back out.
I haven’t tried tapping. Interesting idea!
Me encantan las herramientas manuales, menuda joya, la has dejado muy bien. Buen trabajo.
Im glad that you didnt restore it. Great video. Lovely machine.
Beautiful restoration, well done. I use such a drill, they are truly amazing.
Thanks! Yes, they are great.

Drill chuck restoration
Haha, true!
Lucky you ! You found one !!!
I'm jealous ! I'm searching too... nothing...
Yes, I was pretty lucky ;)
Sweet!
Great tutorial and a big help thanks. What length are the drill chuck springs ?
Thanks! I’m not sure anymore. If you have one yourself, I think it is best to open it up and buy springs as similar as possible to the original ones. I couldn’t find any that were quite as stiff as the old ones.
Mine does not go up and down for some reason, everything seems to spin like yours, any ideas?
Hm, that‘s hard to say. Maybe something is stuck inside the spindle? Have you tried putting some oil into the little hole at the very top?
Nice job on the "resto" maintenance...but you could use a badly needed bench grinder with a wire wheel! :)
Very cool and unusual well done. 👍
Thanks!
Man I wish I could find one of these! I would be perfect because I live in an apartment.
Yes, same here :)
Great restoration video! I just got one of these for restoration and the chuck springs are garbage. Can you tell me where you got the chuck springs from?
Thanks! I just ordered some springs of similar size from a guy on eBay. The original springs were very stiff. But the ones I got work fine!
@@imadethischannel Thanks! Do you remember the size?
They were 4mm by 22mm with a wire thickness of 0.5mm. If I had to do it again, I would try to get a slightly thicker wire so that they are stiffer. It works ok with those, though.
I love this drill press. Where can I buy this drill ,is it available somewhere?
Unfortunately no one makes anything like this at the moment, at least to my knowledge. Mine is from the 1930s and I got it used.

Great, have fun with it!
Love it, how is this machine called in German?
The brand ist called Ixion. I‘m not sure if there is a specific word for it. Maybe Handkurbeltischbohrmaschine?
Fantastico!
If you want less expensive than lighter fluid, you can try "white gas" ("Essence F" in French). It smell the same, and works well :)
Thanks for the hint. Although the lighter fluid was pretty cheap :)

Yes, it is great to use. A depth stop would be nice, but I can live without one…

Hi, the brake that contacts the spindle is made from brass.
Those are unbelievably expensive here! :(
Well, I was quite lucky. Sometimes you can find them very cheaply.
I've always wanted one of these be never able to find one when I have the money
Nice job cleaning it up it looks great!!
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Thanks!
@@imadethischannel You're welcome
I want one.
Understandable:) This has been the nicest thing I have bought in a while. Keep your eyes open!
Where did you buy that drill press?
On a classifieds site in Germany.
👌👌
Nice job 👏 just found one for sale 🤞
Great! Where are you located?
@@imadethischannel yorkshire 👍
Nice! Have fun with your machine! You will definitely enjoy it!
@i made this I love old tools got quite a nice collection 👌
Want to buy one type
This was not a restoration, you only partially washed the device and did not disassemble the parts completely
Yes, I know. I was struggling with the name, too. What do you think about „makeover“?
❤️
