SYND 24/02/80 BREZHNEV SPEECH ON RUSSIAN WITHDRAWAL FROM AFGHANISTAN

(22 Feb 1980) The Soviet President, Leonid Brezhnev, has said he wants an international guarantee of non-interference in Afghanistan's internal affairs before the withdrawal of Russian troops. Brezhnev, says the United States has gone into hysterics on a global scale over Afghanistan -- and is turning the Indian Ocean into "a power keg." Brezhnev made his allegations in a speech to voters in the Kremlin's palace of congresses as part of the elections for the Supreme Soviet (mr brezhnev is a candidate). He accused America of using Afghanistan as "a pretext to broaden its expansion in Asia." The United States was demanding the withdrawal of Soviet forces but in fact was doing everything to put off that possibility, mr Brezhnev went on. "i want to state very definitely," he said, "that we will be ready to commence the withdrawal of our troops as soon as all forms of outside interference directed against the government and people of afghanistan cease to exist." Western diplomats are divided on their interpretation of the Russian leader's remarks. Some dismiss it as representing no shift in the Kremlin's line on Afghanistan -- that the Russians went in to stop outside interference but others think it might indicate that Moscow is seeking a way of cutting its losses and extricating itself from Afghanistan

Incorrect title.. Just goes to show how unprofessional AP is. BREZHNEV could not possibly give a speech on "Withdrawal" from Afghanistan, particularly in 1980. That's when Soviets actually invaded Afghanistan. The withdrawal took place about 9 years later under Gorbachev. The content of the speech is completely different from the description and only alludes to USSR commitment to security of Vietnam against aggression from "capitalists".

You're incorrect as well, since the Soviets never invaded Afghanistan, but rightfully and legitimally intervened on request of the legal Afghan government of that time.

@@hanbyol19 United Nations Security Council Resolution 462 states otherwise. Adopted by overwhelming majority, but obviously vetoed by USSR, who held veto power. The Afghan government you refer to was not legal, but the result of string of assassinations and a coup.

@@ernstgoldman3634 Well, what happened in Afghanistan should never have been a concern of the rest of the international community during the 1970's anyway! Furthermore, the fucking Mujahideen was supported by the U.S. and some other countries in its attack on the Afghan socialist government at the time as well! After all, the Mujahideen were TERRORISTS and remained that way when they also attack the U.S. as a result of a blowback on September 11, 2001! #coldwarsucks

The office of the President never existed until the last days of the USSR. Leaders all held the office of General Secretary until Gorbachev introduced a "President" in order to be more like the rest of the world.

If he was then that would make him a mere figurehead with no real power over his country and his people like Queen Elizabeth of England with Prime Minister Boris Johnson as the head of the government, the one with the real power. If Brezhnev was head of state that would make Prime Minister Alexei Kosygin the one with the real power, right?

​@@67nairb Kosygin was merely second only to Brezhnev in terms of power and influence do to Brezhnev's position as top leader of the ruling communist party. Brezhnev however was head of state but that only came much later in his era of leadership at 1976
