    A joke my pastor used to tell:
    Brezhnev was so proud of his car collection, he brought his mother to the Kremlin garage one day so she could admire them too. "Look at all these beautiful cars!" he said. His mother, now pushing 90 and getting senile, looked at him with worried tears, and said, "But Leonid, what will you do when the Communists come and take them all away?"

    A fun story about the 1973 Lincoln, depicted briefly at 10:08 ...upon being given the car, Brezhnev enthusiastically jumped into the driver's seat, then beckoned Nixon to join him as a passenger. Once Nixon closed the passenger door, Brezhnev promptly hit the ignition and began driving off. He then took Nixon on an impromptu trip around Camp David, often at high rates of speed, and in the process scared the hell out of both Nixon and his Secret Service detail.

    I just love the notion of Brezhnev thinking "I'd tap that" in regards to Jill. I'm not even into most redheads, and I'd "tap that". :P
    I mostly know her from the Bond flick Diamonds are Forever, as she had mostly stopped acting by the time I was born (I'm a few years younger than you).
    She has been married to Robert Wagner (another big name from back in the day) for 30+ years... he's the one who caused Natalie Wood to drown off the coast of California one night she was out there with Wagner and Christopher Walken (they were filming Brainstorm at the time, and were on a break).

    That clip of Brezhnev refusing politely to drink his champagne glass until Nixon drank from his glass first was priceless. As an American when I hear the name Brezhnev that’s the first thing that pops into my mind. That and Brezhnev falling asleep all the time at functions in his golden years. I’m surprised you said many people living in the USSR during his years as General Secretary thought so positively about him. You said something along the lines of people living better while Brezhnev was in power. It was at 1:06 about Brezhnev living well and letting others live well too. It surprises me because in hindsight Brezhnev took over the USSR at the peak of its success and power and by the time Brezhnev died in 1982 the USSR was already starting to collapse. It’s like being handed a brand new Ferrari and giving back an old and heavily dented Volkswagen bug. I would have thought the Soviet people would hold him most responsible for the long term fall or decline of the USSR.

    • @theotherohlourdespadua1131
      @theotherohlourdespadua1131 Год назад +1

      Well, the collapse didn't happen while Brezhnev was alive despite being a big contribution to such. Same reason why in America President Hoover is looked down upon in the popular consciousness since he was the president when the Great Depression happened despite the problems happening well before his presidency. The thing about hindsight is it's not clear at the beginning but overtime we understood it more...

    Where did you get the info that a person could own only 1 car in the USSR? I tried to search it on google, but could not find any usable sources about this topic. But I know a guy who owned 2 cars in the 70s-80s, both legally registered on his name. He also owned 2 garages (in the same cooperative), 1 motorcycle and 1 motorboat. And he was not in the government, just a guy with official monthly income of about 600 rubles. I'm wondering, If it was illegal, how did he manage to buy 2 cars and 2 garages? Bribing the officials is unlikely, because everyone knew that he had 2 cars, so somebody would most likely report on him, if it was illegal.

    Well, Pope of Rome and Queen Elizabeth only had one Pullman, Leonid and other dictators had one Pullman as well, rock stars like Elvis Presley had one Mercedes 600 limousine of regular size, but comarade Tito had six extended pieces.
    Actually young Tito was a Daimler employee, so I guess he remains faithfull to Daimler flagship brand and he had obligation to advertise ex employer premium product or maybe he was just an Hochstapler.
