I just saw her this afternoon. Its been a long long time since I have seen a Tosca played with such depth and passion. After a few years ago's modern version of Tosca - this was a beautiful blessing. The stage scenes were amazing and I could actually feel tosca's hatred for the pig police lieutenant and her love for her painter lover. Sonya Yoncheva was absolutely amazing...Cant wait to see her in La Boheme.
It seems this remarkable lady can turn her wonderful voice to almost anything right now. What an exciting prospect she is - have seen her 5 or 6 times now at Covent Garden (Antonia, Norma, Marguerite, Michaela etc.) and each time she has blown the audience away with her bright and excitingly edgy yet beautiful tone. However, I do SO hope she is not doing too much too quickly and learning too many roles. Time to consolidate now and perfect, perfect, perfect and PROTECT. The MET and her management MUST work with her to protect this most wonderful instrument from overuse and over extension too quickly. What a devastating loss it would be if her voice were to develop problems and cause her early decline. Back to UK ASAP please, Sonya. We adore you!
I would agree with her Michaela, her fantastic Marguerite- the Antonia was ok- but Norma was a mistcast. Its so sad- she sings a repertoire which is doesnt suit her- Ich befürchte die Party wird bald vorbei sein...Schade
Well, they are two different parts which need two different voices.I don't find her "ready" and there are points in which in the registration seems to lack energy and "espressione". I hope I'll have the change to listen her Tosca live and make a myself a real opinion because registrations are not the best way to judge a singer.Tonight I'll see her at Teatro alla Scala for the general rehearsal of Bellini's "Il pirata" and I lvoed her twice for last year's "La bohème" :)
I have been on a Tosca RUclips spree. So far, no performer has moved me on this aria like Maria Callas has. But I must say, this lady here is pretty good. She has a great voice and technique, and by the ending, she managed to loosen up from focusing too much on the technique and actually connect emotionally to the song. When she shed that tear it felt pretty real.
If you are still on that Tosca RUclips spree, you might like this audio recording with Corelli,Price and MacNeil. I have only done half of the subtitles but I will probably get it all done within 1-2 weeks from today 👍
Beautiful Tosca! Regret to read the systemic negative trolling below. It does not matter one little bit for those who witnessed the magic yesterday . What an amazing performance!
I don't get it. Some people can talk about the woman like she's nothing. Callas got some tears out of me with this one, but this woman FAR SURPASSED the emotion brought with Callas. The orchestra actually had to wait for her to get her composure. She really was crying. FABULOUS
This is a magnificent rendering of this most famous of arias in the most iconic role Tosca, although I haven’t seen the whole performance of the opera yet- I’m saving it for when I go onto Met on demand- I am mightily impressed. Like a lot of other comments have said her voice has a lovely dark rich quality which really does remind you of Callas. Having said that Yoncheva is a superb soprano in her own right, and just hearing her sing this aria makes me forget all the terrible atmosphere and woes of our current situation. Once we get through this dark period I will look forward to getting the chance to see her live at the opera again. Let’s all keep listening to these wonderful videos. Long live opera, long live RUclips.
Beautiful singing! I liked this better on my second listen than the first. I can feel the emotion. If you can’t, try just listening. Inside the Met she should sound fantastic. I’ll be there in a few weeks!
I saw her in this role in January and she was fantastic. She 100% consciously channeled 60's Callas in this role and I didn't mind it (it's the only era of hers that people can try to impersonate, ya can't impersonate 50's Callas...just can't be done). Her Violetta was better than the Met's had in a good while. She's taking on Cherubini's Medea within the year so I definitely think Callas's influence is felt through her which I appreciate and just hope she doesn't spread herself too thin.
Just listened to Netrebko sing this aria then came across this recording of Sonya's and how fresh and uncontrived it sounds by comparison. Quite moving and beautiful.
a little colors of callas or an imitation of callas natural voice and then, people got crazy about new sopranos!! let maria callas rest in peace please!!once and for all!! thanks!!

Love youtube "experts" who say she's taking on too much too soon. She's in her late 30s, about the same age every famous Tosca who ever sang the part sang wa. Is she just supposed to sing Mimi forever? And maybe people should get out and actually attend the opera instead of giving themselves authorities based on recordings of Callas in relation to videos of Yoncheva on youtube from an HD broadcast. We are, I assume, talking about a living art form. Also in case anyone has actually bothered to attend opera in the past century, the last Tosca productions were premiered by Hildegard Behrens and Karita Mattila respectively and revivals were populated by the likes of Urmana, Racette, Malfitano, and late Vaness. Anyone who can say in all sincerity that those women were better Tosca's than what is in this video clearly don't care about music as such. ALL of those ladies had problems with the notes and none of them had anything remotely resembling the style, which Yoncheva audibly does.
Can someone please tell me who this is? Thanks! Frustrating that if you're trying to learn about Opera they don't tell you who the singer is. Some of the comments say it is Sonia but I don't know who that is. Thank you if anyone can help!
As much as i love Angela Gheorghiu's singing voice, i have to admit that her version to this aria is seriously lacking for some reason but that this singer has totally nailed it. 10/10 easily ...
She appears to be standing very far to STAGE RIGHT (that's Audience Left!) Perhaps the stereo effect is emphasizing her stage position, which would put most of her voice primarily on the LEFT speaker, perhaps your speakers are connected backwards?
God all these comments about how this role is wrong or right for her... everybody has a different opinion about every singer, i should know. Truth is, some people just tell their opinion though they don’t have ANY IDEA how to actually sing. Unfortunately, these people are often opera directors, too. Says how wrong the world is. Of course, there are Fachs, but some roles can be sung by different kinds of voices (of course I’m not saying that a Königin der Nacht can sing Walküre, but lirico, lirico-spinto...really ??) All I see and hear is that Yoncheva sings this beautifully with a musicality that begins to be rare these days and that she gave me freaking goosebumps (am I the only one who saw that she actually shed a tear ??) anyways, please stop saying “she is this or that so she couldn’t sing this or that”. Isn’t it all about music ? You could say “I don’t like her in this role because....” or “I prefer this other singer” but please stop trying to say that you know the whole truth. Александр Усачев о!!!! Да вы уже не спите!!!! У нас в Новосибирске 6.35 утра. На счёт её школы мне трудно говорить, я очень мало божественную Марию слушал. She is perfect! I was there, she touched my soul and made me cry.
Then I told her and thanked for her performance.

Magnificently performed not only vocally but in terms of expressing the raw emotion too.

I'm back again. Can't get enough . How I love the pain.
please don't criticize opera through a video.opera is meant to be experienced live.anything else cannot even reflect the live performance.
You can even see a tear streaking down her face, alongside the very smooth vocal performance. Very nice.
She is a beast here. The voice the acting
Amazing
She breaths every other second and it's so high.
Beautifully sung and wonderfully acted. What more can you want?!
Just wonderful! She was just brilliant in this entire opera. Watched it several times....one of the best Toscas.

Like Levine did to Scotto?
I couldn't stay away from this one. That one lonely little tear.
She was fabulous last year in Traviata. She should be great in Tosca as well.

try Angela gheorghiu at the ROH . Divine !
Generic waffle. You don't know squat about opera.
La Callas la divina..prima al mondo ..la Garifullina è la seconda..voce forte e bella.
@@araucariapasquale1 I am with you. ( "Pretty") as he would say, arrogant.
Beautiful Tosca! Regret to read the systemic negative trolling below. It does not matter one little bit for those who witnessed the magic yesterday . What an amazing performance!
I was there last night this Woman is a vocal beast
Beautiful voice and song!!
Bravo!!!....such devoted emotion expressed so brilliantly yet tenderly !!
All three soloists hit it out of the park today. Great performance.
Fantastic rendition of this classic!
I would like to say that Sonya is the singer who made me fall in love with this roll. The definitive Toscas are her and Shirley verret for me.
I love you sonya♥ I'm your big fan!!!!
Beautiful Sonya !
Maravillosa Aria en la voz de Sonya Yoncheva..!!!
Francisco Ferrer Galiana )8,
This aria sung by her is worth listening to again and again.
I don't get it. Some people can talk about the woman like she's nothing. Callas got some tears out of me with this one, but this woman FAR SURPASSED the emotion brought with Callas. The orchestra actually had to wait for her to get her composure. She really was crying. FABULOUS
I agree - I find her performance more powerful
Very nice. A bit of a Callas-esque color to her voice (this is a compliment)
Rojaslee Violin, I noticed that too and I love it! Such a sublime and even sound! Love Yoncheva!
Agreed, she has a nice smokey/grainy colour. I also love how her vibrato wobbles on that Bb like Callas, too.
Rojaslee Violin more than a bit like Callas, wobble and back of the throat . It’s an impersonation not a performance?
junefun55 No soprano would impersonate another singer’s wobble or purposely force one from their voice.
Cathy Wood gosh, nobody claimed it was an impersonation.

Thank you that was very moving 😔
Wonderful, I can hear Maria Callas in her voice. X
Belíssimo! Brava!!! 👏

Incredible set and cast. This will be one for the ages. I admit I'm happy to see Bondy's idea a thing of the past.
Very beautiful performance of this marvellous aria by Puccini
I watched each and every rendition of this aria. This woman is the VERY BEST,,,, nobody better.

As much as i love Angela Gheorghiu's singing voice, i have to admit that her version to this aria is seriously lacking for some reason but that this singer has totally nailed it. 10/10 easily ...
to the MET technician, how come her voice comes only from my right speaker?
It comes from both speakers on mine
hmmm. maybe my system but I have three computers at home with three different sound system
She appears to be standing very far to STAGE RIGHT (that's Audience Left!) Perhaps the stereo effect is emphasizing her stage position, which would put most of her voice primarily on the LEFT speaker, perhaps your speakers are connected backwards?

Magic
Interesting that she doesn't (as far as I can tell) fall to her knees here. I wonder what the director's thought behind that was
can people let callas rest in

What is the matter with you people. Can't you just enjoy a beautiful aria sung by a wonderful singer and leave it at that?
It is a beautiful aria, she is a great singer, but....no Tosca! The voice is cold, no passion, almost metallic with heavy breathing....
Oh these big cheasted sopranos! She really has the lungs for it and she is very good!malatets!mprava!
Beautiful. Her voice reminds me of Callas
She sounds similarly to Callas to me. I love it
Every performance is unique and beautiful and opera is an incredibly difficult art form, so let’s celebrate it not criticise.
