Whenever he goes to the repeat, he plays it differently.... and it sounds wonderful.
Beautiful. I love how we can interprets Bach's music in different ways. For example, it's interesting how Maisky uses vibrato whereas I play it without. The genius that was Johan!
This man has made me fall in love with classical all over again... thank you for posting

im in love with mischa maisky!! lol
i love this piece. i play viola, and so far this is my favorite piece to play! i play it like this too, really slow and romantic. when i played this in concert, i could feel the audience in tension, which is very cool =p i actually even play a little more romantic! =]
It is a bad habit of mine to judge each suite by its Sarabande (or equivalent) - so I must say, I am quite the fan of suite no. 3. Maisky plays it beautifully, along with all of the other movements and suites that he plays :) Another wonderful recording Mr. Maisky! Bravo
beautiful. this is very inspiring for me because i am in the process of playing this and the gigue from the 3rd suite as well. thank u so much mr. maisky on a great performance!!!
This piece requires SO MUCH soul put into it, and LOTS of musicality to make it sound amazing, you have to put yourself in the piece.
I'm a cellist and i just this for one of my college audition piece's. The original suites written by bach were lost years ago with him, the one we play were written down by his wife, the only real difference in them are the bowings but there just as brilliant. =)
Beautifully played! Bravo! TY.
I've been grinding my way through this recently. Maisky's rendition lacks the out of tune chords and desperate shifts that are my specialty. I had to listen to it twice to see if it was the same piece. Maybe some more practice is required ...
I hear you brother! lol
Late response ;D yah I know those desperate 100mph shifts that happen 😂😂😂 xD
Anthony Berglas same here.
His shifts are so fast! Unreal.

awesome performance
Nice job, I hope I can play this with such precision eventually
Amazing. Just simply amazing
Bravo....beautiful
WHAT??? Dude I totally need to go to that museum.
@41hz Actually, you are correct in all matters except for the fact we do indeed know that these were written by JS Bach. A copy written by his own (disorganized) hand was discovered in Leipzig among the affairs of his son, Carl Phillip Bach, along with dozens of portraits and correspondences. I know this because i have just visited the Bach Museum in Leipzig ;) If you're interested they have a complete repertoire of all of his known compositions.
Oh how sublime.
So good !!!
好!
Misha le da a esta pieza una polifonía que no se encuentra en otros intérpretes
he actually did improvise quite a bit of the music we know today, but was able to recall enough of it that he could write it down. of course he didnt improvise the more rigid genres (fugue, for example), but things like toccatas? certainly. not all of it was improvised, he would've gone back and altered/fixed things. but bach did write down some of his improvisations. also, he most likely did play cello, at least a little. and did play violin. and keyboard. chill out.
Amazing!!!! This is soooo beautiful. A little too much vibrato for me but it's excellent.
@SirDanOfHell Huh, thats interesting. I always thought that the only manuscript of a cello suite we had in J Seb's own hand was his transcription of the fifth suite for lute. Really cool sounding transcription by the way :) and all the other suites were secondhand manuscripts from his wife. You seem really confident though, so I believe you.
@41hz Sure, the music was structurally pre-meditated and written down, but let's not deny that fluent improvisation was valued even then--organists (esp. students of Bach) were regularly expected to improvise with sound counterpoint given only the chord progression. It follows to reason from the repeats in many baroque pieces would withstand improvisation from fine musicians--at minimum in their ornamentation--then and now. Indeed that's part of what we hear from many great performers today.
Come to perform for us in Australia, Mr Maisky!
So pretty! He is playing it so musically!!
@41hz and apologies for responding to a 3 year old post, but as important as it is to revere history, I think it's also important to keep minds open to creative possibilities especially when it comes to something like music. In any case, enjoy the music--cheers!

I love ❤️ this song so much!! So peaceful and beautiful! I am playing this as well!
to 41hz:
i think u ignore a history: bach was able to improvise /his/ music and m. maisky /and all "interprets" / cant improvise any music / also not bach music.
thats a point -
and because of that:
interpretation is realy owerestimated ..
:-) !
peace bro !
Sarabande is a dance. I can't believe all those famous performers never play this in such way that one would dance on it
I'm learning this piece! ITS SO HARD 😏😏😏
I don't think so...

@typhoonaaron you obviously got no steeze whatsoever lol
I always listen to this guy for interpretation ideas. I believe Bach did write these 1771-1773 while he was kapellmesister in cohen though it might have been written by his wife and for a slightly different instrument than the cello called viola da spalla.
I have the music out right in front of me!
Sparx Da Cringy good luck
