Fifthcell Yup, they need every square inch of space they can muster and still drive and park on tiny Japanese roads. Plus, speed limits are so low in most places you can barely enjoy a sportier car.

They are brilliant at what they do best. Designed for crowded Japanese cities. My ex wife used to have a fleet of 5 for urban deliveries in English villages & towns, some of the streets date back to medieval lanes meant for a pony & cart where a Ford Transit would struggle or even not pass at all. Any American that has been to old English towns will understand. As for speed, the average speed of inner London traffic is barely more than horse & cart days.

I miss my kei van, Daihatsu Hijet. Despite how it feels, they don’t tip because all of the weight is on the floor. I got it sideways on a dirt road once by accident and I swear it was going to roll, but everything was fine. It’s also pretty fun to drive at low speeds because you can fit through anywhere, turn on a dime, parking is never an issue, and you’re constantly shifting gears with a super marshmallow clutch (at least on mine).

A lot of people don't know this but the real time 4 wheel drive system on the Acty used a series of rubber bands to transmit power from the rear transaxle to the front end.
"This is how they Japan in Japan!" LOL! Also, "To Japan" means "To apply a hardened, asphalt-based, durable lacquer-type finish". Often seen on tools made in years gone by, it was developed as a substitute for authentic Japanese lacquering techniques, so in Japan they actually DO Japan differently!
in Egypt, Suzuki Super Carry's are a staple of public transport. No one is familiar with the term "Kei vehicle", it's just treated as a regular vehicle and no one thinks it's strange or anything. It just hit me that I see these on the high way all the time and I didn't realize they were so weak. Mind you these vans haul 7 full grown adults ( not including the driver and in these cramped spaces) hundreds of times a day from place to place for years on end! Honestly now that I think about it, it's kind of amazing.
I know it's an old video but I'm thinking ab buying one of these so I needed an honest review. The funniest thing however is seeing you drive into Tyson's corner which is where I live. Small world but now I know there's other people who can indeed drive in northern VA in a kei van
In case you were wondering, these kind of vans are also produced in Mainland China and Taiwan in the LHD form, but finding a 25 yo one with mint condition like the Acty shown in the video can be challenging because most of those are totaled or abandoned due to regulation or their poor condition even before they live up for 25 years.
Dat Daihatsu Mini-Truk. Mmmmmm.. I don't know what it's like in the rest of the country, but around where I'm at in the back-asswards rural everything that is the corners where Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas and Louisiana meet the place is Lousy with grey-import Daihatsu Mini-trucks Exactly. Like. That one. Why? Because Jeeps and Tacomas have gotten too big and too expensive to go bouncing across the pasture doing farm-work during the week and then go bouncing through the woods Huntin' during the weekend, and side-by-side ATVs and UTVs are too Not-Road-Legal to replace them.
+WojterEX How could you not be happy in a Kei car? You're in this little box of joy with a buzzy little 3-pot motor. I'd be grinning from ear to ear 24/7.
I had one of these in the late 1990s when I lived in Japan. Great car but boy was it gutless. With 4 passengers, it could barely go up steep hills. It had a huge interior and handled pretty well.
This channel is like 60% info about the car 30% sarcastic remarks in a deep voice and 10% pop culture reference. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, I honestly like this channel, it's just something I've noticed after watching 20+ videos.
Actually if you were willing to do the work to import it, its about as cheap as buying a used car here after costs. Japan has some strict auto laws that make older cars expensive to own. So everyone just gets newer cars when it costs too much to tag and get insurance.
Actually one of the cars that we drive on the daily where I work. Granted, I live in Japan, but still. Sports cars that do 50 klicks. God, I love these things.
There were alot of those cars driving around in Switzerland in the 90s and 2000s. Especially Subarus. Gotta deliver those croissants in the snow, AWD son.
when im back at home (DMV) for break, i want you to review my 2007 kia optima with a five speed. It's such an awesome car. No tractioin control, ABS, and it has a cable throttle. its a go kart and its only 10 years old
I kind of wished there had been a US domestic version of this. Probably be impossible to make a van like this now because of all the safety requirements.
It's pronounced like the letter K. Not key. I drove a daihatsu atrai for about three years that is the same thing. It had a 550cc triple engine with intercooler and turbocharger, and 4WD. It was a great little car. My neighbor has a suzuki jimny that looks like a jeep, and it has a 550cc two stroke triple engine. It even sounds like an old suzuki water buffalo.
I own one of these. "Be ready for the questions," could not be more true. thankfully I haven't had any encounters with town hall enthusiasts yet. all positive!
The Acty’s radiator is located in the front of the vehicle behind the bumper. The large downward facing “radiator” in the middle of the vehicle is actually the condenser for the air-conditioning.
I'm going to probably sound incredibly stupid, but wouldn't sucking air up through a down facing radiator also suck in dirt, debris, water, etc? Shouldn't the fan be blowing down instead?
Too bad the Japanese safety standards on this thing is practically nonexistent. Less safe than a 90's Miata. The thing's basically a cardboard box. I wouldn't be driving this thing more than 25 mph since you're bound to lose your legs /w that lack of crush zone. No side impact protection either. Edit -fixed typos
+s50201 I would love one of these if I had some land and needed to haul stuff around said land. Otherwise I'd keep it off the road. I've seen them fold like a pancake in accidents when I was living in Japan. Speed limits are slow over there so I couldn't imagine getting into an accident at US speeds with large vehicles. Death trap on wheels!
It must be pretty funny to have it as a "spare car", for fun at the weekend or for music festivals (in Europe) because AWD, small, loading space for tent and stuff and AWD!!11
This is great. We have a good number of those mini-trucks in Cayman. They work great on a small island where fuel is expensive. The AC actually works really well considering the engine is only 550cc and I don't think I ever drove it without the AC on full. People ask what is the 0-60 time, I just laugh and say it hasn't made it to 60 yet.
I used to left-hand-shift for my brother when he drove a stick and was using one of his hands. Safety first! I wish the passengers in my car also drove stick and helped me out once in a while... Or perhaps I should wish that people actually drove stick these days.
I think a kei van would be fun. But also I’m 6’2” and I’m not sure I could shift it. It might just be too small to move my legs… I’d have to sit in one first to see.

Honestly now that I think about it, it's kind of amazing.
the super carry is a larger and more powerful export version of the carry with a 1.0-1.5l engine
“Maybe a Milf, or something will show up and ask questions”
-Regular car Reveiws
Damn, that guy looks happy :)
+WojterEX How could you not be happy in a Kei car? You're in this little box of joy with a buzzy little 3-pot motor. I'd be grinning from ear to ear 24/7.
a living Micro Machines car
I had one of these in the late 1990s when I lived in Japan. Great car but boy was it gutless. With 4 passengers, it could barely go up steep hills. It had a huge interior and handled pretty well.
This channel is like 60% info about the car 30% sarcastic remarks in a deep voice and 10% pop culture reference.
I'm not saying this is a bad thing, I honestly like this channel, it's just something I've noticed after watching 20+ videos.
You are over 20 episodes in, so whatever it is, it works.
damn, now I want one of these.
There are tons of these in here lol
+Behemothokun quite economical also
+Showta Ito Yeah but importing one to America...
Hey you come here come here why dont you like american cars?
"kei" = "kay"
K Van.
When you want a JDM but your poor
Or you need a *practical* JDM.
I always want a japanese domestic market
Actually if you were willing to do the work to import it, its about as cheap as buying a used car here after costs. Japan has some strict auto laws that make older cars expensive to own. So everyone just gets newer cars when it costs too much to tag and get insurance.
I like how he knocked the windscreen wipers on when he went to indicate, something you have to get used to in certain Japanese imports.
Actually one of the cars that we drive on the daily where I work. Granted, I live in Japan, but still. Sports cars that do 50 klicks.
God, I love these things.
I got called an "economic traitor" when I posted a WTB for an import car only, so that speech totally spoke to me
Those things are so adorable it's like a derpy rabbit
There were alot of those cars driving around in Switzerland in the 90s and 2000s. Especially Subarus. Gotta deliver those croissants in the snow, AWD son.
when im back at home (DMV) for break, i want you to review my 2007 kia optima with a five speed. It's such an awesome car. No tractioin control, ABS, and it has a cable throttle. its a go kart and its only 10 years old
I love watching Troy drive this thing. He's SO HAPPY!
Project D spare tire carrier?
Karl23extreme nope, it was a Mazda bongo, it’s a larger van but still a kei van.
I kind of wished there had been a US domestic version of this. Probably be impossible to make a van like this now because of all the safety requirements.
Diahatsu imported some in the 80s as LHD IIRC
Ls swap it
Ayyy Lmfao that sounds like a great idea but i dont think it would fit
Ayyy Lmfao I reckon a B16 would suffice
And by it wouldnt fit i mean a smaller engine would do, like a rotary
Sounds like death
You need a K20
I had an original Acty van, which was great fun to drive. This is a very much improved animal indeed!
I just bought one of these. I've had it three months and can't get enough of it :)
I WANT ONE! WHERE CAN I PURCHASE MY KEI VAN!!!!
MUST HAVEEEE
It's pronounced like the letter K. Not key. I drove a daihatsu atrai for about three years that is the same thing. It had a 550cc triple engine with intercooler and turbocharger, and 4WD. It was a great little car. My neighbor has a suzuki jimny that looks like a jeep, and it has a 550cc two stroke triple engine. It even sounds like an old suzuki water buffalo.
Can you put a LS engine in it?
And Dana 60's on 40's
K20 for days
+dany fatso that would be badass
AWD K20 kei van... Sounds monsteras!
Short answer: yes.
Long answer: you can LS swap nearly anything with four DOT approved wheels on it, as long as you are willing to get crafty.
Best review, ever. So good, I watched two times. This is JAPANESE!!!!
I own one of these. "Be ready for the questions," could not be more true. thankfully I haven't had any encounters with town hall enthusiasts yet. all positive!
"Fairfax County! White people!"
Which dent is BEST dent...
+Bakani Snowpaw Which meme is best meme?
The opening dent scene was amazingly well recorded. Also, hi fuzzy! :D
Mr. R's getting a bit sloppy with the editing.
The Acty’s radiator is located in the front of the vehicle behind the bumper. The large downward facing “radiator” in the middle of the vehicle is actually the condenser for the air-conditioning.
Just saw one of these of Route 287 in Morris County, NJ.. The exact same one. Really cool...!!!
"Either you're in motion or you're retreating." Are sure it's not French?
It surrendered XD
"I'm going just as fast as you" isn't much of an accomplishment when your comparison is a Land Rover Defender.
I'm going to probably sound incredibly stupid, but wouldn't sucking air up through a down facing radiator also suck in dirt, debris, water, etc? Shouldn't the fan be blowing down instead?
The local humor may be lost on others but luckily for me it is hilarious. Hello from NEPA.
8 years after this being uploaded and I daily one and love it
Too bad the Japanese safety standards on this thing is practically nonexistent.
+s50201 well this would happen to you with basically any car
+SquallyZ06 in Illinois they are classified as farm vehicles
i heard that its why a lot of these small pickups and vans are not sold outside japan.
+s50201 I have seen Daihatsu kei vans and trucks in use at the naval shipyard stateside. :-)
It must be pretty funny to have it as a "spare car", for fun at the weekend or for music festivals (in Europe) because AWD, small, loading space for tent and stuff and AWD!!11
Lmao I loved that concerned citizens part
This is great. We have a good number of those mini-trucks in Cayman. They work great on a small island where fuel is expensive. The AC actually works really well considering the engine is only 550cc and I don't think I ever drove it without the AC on full. People ask what is the 0-60 time, I just laugh and say it hasn't made it to 60 yet.
Oh, the one I had was a Dihatsu Hj-Jet van, almost identical to the Honda.
I used to left-hand-shift for my brother when he drove a stick and was using one of his hands. Safety first!
I wish the passengers in my car also drove stick and helped me out once in a while... Or perhaps I should wish that people actually drove stick these days.
2:39 *blue punisher skull intensifying*
Your concerned dad imitation gave me a bad feeling, in my stomach! :'(
IT'S "K" GOD DAMMIT
hahahaha yea it was a tiny bit irritating hearing it said wrong some 40 times
I think a kei van would be fun. But also I’m 6’2” and I’m not sure I could shift it. It might just be too small to move my legs… I’d have to sit in one first to see.
this is my new fav channel. i'm just getting into cars (and soon buying my first) and it's such a unique take on them. i love it. it's so dumb
