Bringers of moral and spiritual truth are almost always murdered. (Jesus, Gandhi, Servetus, Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Oscar Romero, Robert Kennedy, maybe JFK, other priests and saints burned and stoned. And Howard Beale. Moses, Buddha, and Mohammed got lucky.) If the new truth survives, *then* it's tamed and bled of as much of its threat as possible.

Man, it's wild seeing everyone miss the point. Howard is right in diagnosing the problems, but how the man speaks and acts are perfectly indicative of a mental breakdown. The mind cracks in unpredictable ways, and some people build a fortress around theirs to keep it sedated with that delusional sense of grandeur that just isn't reasonable by any measure. Howard was easily manipulated, as shown by the scene in which he's confronted by the head of the network on the religion of capitalism, clearly not showing any real responsibility or control over his own mental faculties. No matter what they may be saying, if you saw man, muttering to himself in the rain, while wearing pajamas, you'd probably look the other way, or be on guard. The point here isn't how right Howard is, but rather he is a person with real issues, and is still a victim, whose human frailty is another asset in the entertainment industry. Anyone here who cheers him on without considering his break with reality, is the target audience for this network.

  • @madahad9

I saw this in '76 when I was about 12 or 13 (depending upon the time it came to the last run theatre in my neighbourhood) and it left a deep impression. I was a weird kid who enjoyed films targeted for an older audience. I'd go so far as to say that Network was a more memorable experience than Star Wars. The film has only increased in appeal over the decades and I was understanding the satire more, especially any scene with the terrorist group as they negotiate network contracts with their lawyers. It's been commented endlessly how it predicted the future of network television, especially the news and it's descent into entertainment and less about being a source of reliable information. Fox News is not very far away from what Paddy Cheyevsky envisioned. It deserves all the praise lavished by critics.

Poor Mr. Beale. He didn't have a "psychotic break". He simply reached a point, became "enlightened" (I prefer simply thoroughly disgusted and angry with the stuff of everyday life) and refused to "choose sides" in being told who to believe and why.
On Monday 02/27/12, I was seeing a "therapist" for "depression". We talked for a bit, then she brought in the psychiatrist for a few minutes, you know, so he could prescribe all the right drugs. We talked for a few minutes and then he stopped me and asked, "What's your point of view?"
It was, perhaps, the first time I had actually listened to my own words...and he was right. I was indeed blabbering on and on about "If I look at it from this point of view, then...but if I look at it this way, then...but at the same time, from this point of view I can see why...."
So I answered him, told him the truth and that truth remains more true now than it was over eight years ago:
    "I don't have one."
So he wrote prescriptions for a couple of pills...and I through 'em in the trash.
And then, just a few years later, some chap called Obi Wan said this in yet another movie:
"Luke, you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view."
So I sit, I read the "news," and I read the comments...and people scream and shout their "points of view" but few have even thought about looking at that "bigger" picture. It is "my way or the highway".
So all "this," this endless barrage of "points of view" here in the world of "social media"? Ah, 'tis a lot of things, yes, but "social"? No, not even close.
But it is indeed the greatest show on earth and, unlike the trip to the psychiatrist's office, it is all free.

Therapists exists to prescribe drugs and make people do all the work themselves. They're trained not to actually give any real actionable advice. They're useless. I was very depressed a few years ago and went to therapy. All they wanted to do was put me on drugs and have me make repeat visits to the office so they could collect copay. Well, my mom was on depression meds, and she was also still a wreck. The pills didn't work, clearly. Once I realized that, I immediately stopped going and sure enough I fixed my problems on my own.

What's interesting is that Stallone is up for Best Actor as well and when Peter Finch wins Stallone is in shock and seems a bit pissed. As one of the commentors on that video clip wrote, "Stallone is like, 'da fuck' "

I've looked for the clip and can't find it, but I read that the night before he died he was on Carson with George Carlin as another guest, and Carlin's whole routine is about death. I'd like to see it if it's available.
That's strange. I'm one who thinks that some deaths in Hollywood are faked and some are hits or rituals. Anyway, that story reminded me of Ultimate Warrior giving his last speech in a huge arena where he says that he might die of a heart attack any day and the next day it's reported that he dies of a heart attack. There are other examples too. Just weird synchronicities or more to it....?

    • @sbswtnchoice

You've done your homework. It's sounds like the Illuminati came for payment in both cases with Finch and the Ultimate Warrior. The so-called 'body count' or 'star-whacking' as Randy Quaid put it seems to go even further back than just recent years. My mom used to say how people die in 'threes', but over the years I've come to see it as a thing for famous people connected to Freemasonry or the Illuminati since they love '3's, 6's, and 9's.

I love this movie! Peter Finch wins a posthumous Oscar! He deserved it. He gave a powerful performance!
But I also liked the speech where the corporate guy read him the riot act! He just sat there transfixed.
There are No Countries, only Corporations! Mr. Beale! You are playing with the primal forces of Nature! Mr. Beale! He was In shock!
It was a brutal reality check! And it’s more accurate now than ever! When now Capital flows electronically around the World 🌎 at the speed of sight!
Howard Beal was like an old model car. Obsolete! He had fire in his belly! And he held to his beliefs.
But he didn’t realize the world he cherished no longer existed!
There are no Countries, only Corporations! That phrase says it all because our Supreme Court gave Corporations the legal status of a living person. Which I disagree with but that was their ruling. Corporations are people, too! No there not! Madness! Corporations are legal entities with the equal status to a person. That I don’t agree with. But that’s the law now. We are living with the consequences of that ruling!

Yeah but you see this movie made no real explanation on what really happend, only those who have been down the path and experienced it know what happend to Howard, what really happend his kundalini got awakended and he became enlightened but because he is an old man and out of shape and his nerve system was not prepared, he has "chi sickness" or prana sickness or call it what you like, its the side effects of awakening the kundalini without preparing for it.
