Once again, Michael Neeves demonstrates why he is arguably the best road tester out there. No bragging, no hype, no reading factory specs without really knowing what they mean. So few people out there can even begin to use a bike like this to anywhere near it's potential. Still, it's a wonderful exercise in excess! LOL Ducati riders in Italy preening! Imagine that!
I could listen to this talk about bike reviews all day long. He has probably rode every performance bike out there. And he is so honest with his reviews. Seems like the kind of bloke who would give you the time of day down the local pub and just chat about bikes.cant say anymore really what a top bloke.
Very honest review. Having owned v4s panigale before and now the V4R. I felt that the R changed directions better, and with the right rev range, came out of corners more stable than the v4s. I could get on the power sooner with the R. This is the best feeling panigale IMO yet, again having owned every iteration.
Without doubt, your ability to convey the character and performance of bikes like this in a way that is easily understood by ordinary riders like me, is unparalleled. Brilliant stuff...so thank you.
Thank you Michael for another no nonsense review. It’s so refreshing to me to watch someone with way more skills than I’ve got be completely honest with not only the viewer but himself regarding his ability. Cheers mate
I’m really glad to see this, having watched your original V4R video about a million times. People tend to ignore the power and torque charts when comparing the V4S and V4R, as well as the tech specs noting the same 6% power increase for each model when fitted with the race exhaus. The V4S is actually stronger than the R in low to mid rev ranges. (The headline figure of 240.5 HP for the V4R requires a greater than $500 splash of oil as well as oil changes every few hundred miles.) I think the main differences are the suspension and the way the V4R engine so eagerly spins up to insane revs (just like its 40-plus pound lighter Superleggera V4 brother). It’s very reminiscent of the World SBK version, and I am sure it is very rewarding to ride for those few who can take advantage of all it has to offer. Oh, and then there is that new lightweight dry clutch.
I’ve been to a few European track days the last couple of years and it’s good to see how many Ducati’s are being used compared to a few years ago. Great video Neavsy 🏁
i honestly appreciate real reviews! what is an honest review? the average rider who will ride this in the streets, the canyons some track days. But we dont all have the best riding skills. Not all will race these bikes. I love how regular consumers will ride it in traffic and tell you what is like to ride it and really own it
230+bhp is absolutely insane when you think about back in the early 2000's when the gsxr 1000 k3 was making around 150bhp at the back wheel and that thing was an absolute missile and would lift the front wheel of the throttle in 3rd gear , and back then the most powerful ducati was no where near how times have changed
Ive seen Michael ride on track - always modest and such a great journalist for all these years. I dont trust many journos on youtube - been doing a great job for decades Michael - thanks again for all the help over the years. Just wanted you to know that for what its worth.
I owned a 2019 V4R that i only owned for about 18 months due to a serious medical diagnosis that indicated I would no longer be able to retain my driver's license. thank God the diagnosis turned out to be incorrect. I am considering buying a 2023 R but I don't like the sound that they detuned it with the software mapping. I very much liked the beast that the '19 R was and i like to use my right wrist, my brain and my ass as the throttle map (a former AMA Expert license holder in GP 350cc Road Race). Fyi, i paid $64K for my '19 R with the track kit included.
Awesome review Sir! Best bike journalist ever! Beautiful bike indeed and worth every penny of that £40k. Wouldn't it be great to see a back to back track test of this with Aprilia's X-Trenta
I’ve just woken up. My wife’s brought me a mug of coffee in bed. I’m watching your review and ride of the V4R. Aside from riding (and owning) one it doesn’t get better than this.
I have a 2021 V2, 2023 V4R and a 2023 V4SP2. Love them all but I am the happiest on the V2 riding around on the streets. Hopefully I'll be good enough to go on the track 1 day and see how I can utilize these track monsters...!
Did you feel there was a difference to the 2019? A difference in handling and feel to the V4S? With a lottery win it would be lovely to have one for track use. As pointless for the road as my SP2 though - possibly more so. 😂
Brakes and frame are the same as the V4S. The calipers are not Stylema R. The electronic suspension on the S model isn’t as good as the manual R suspension.
As great as the reviews of these bikes are in covering the performance; I wish the long term reviews cover reliability and cost of ownership because most if not all Italian bikes have had reliability issues or complex maintenance schedules for the extreme models such as the V4R. It would be nice to know what you are signing up for in the long term, in my opinion. It is more or at least as important as the performance
Michael is spot on our last names aren’t Bagnaia, Zarco, Martin, or Bastanini. We can’t get the best out of the V4R just get a V4S or even a V2 and save the cash.
It should be limited and only available to previous R owners like they used to be but Ducati is so money hungry now they will sell them to any rookie squid with the money or good credit
@@USAracing I guess since they do make money, they don't care so long as people buy these machines. I truly thought it would be limited to 500 or to previous owners like you said. I guess if people have money, Ducati won't deviate from selling these kind of motorcycles to just about anyone.
@@USAracing Totally disagree. That would encourage collectors and reduce availability for people who actually want to ride them. I’ve no idea why you would think it’s a bad thing to be able to buy one if you have the money. Does this one still suffer from pumping on exit? My 19 V4S pumps like a mofo, especially when the shock heats up throughout the day. I have to short shift every corner exit.

I think the point is that you’re past the speed limit by the time you grab second gear. There’s a lot to be said for riding a slow bike fast versus riding a fast bike slow. I drive an old 964 and much prefer it on the road to my previous 991.2 GTS, which I found boring on the road because it was so capable and fast. The old 964 has about 250hp and is huge fun on the road at sane speeds. Similar for bikes - I have a SportClassic for the road (about 85hp) and it’s great fun - my SP2 is for the track and it’s a lot more fun there than it was on the road.

So….. I’ve been umming and arrring about finally trading in my 996 for the latest V4 Panigale for riding around roads in the south of France. Nothing since the 996 has really floated my boat, but these latest ones do (mostly cos that exhaust twist by the back wheel no longer looks like bladder…. Yeah I know it’s shallow). But I never track ride. Ignoring money, does one buy the V4s, or the V4r?
Isn't V4R smoother in terms of power delivery than the V4S. Ignoring money, I'd go for the V4R because it's just that machine, for the looks and the performance. If you've got the money, V4R all day.
Keep the 996 because you’ll regret not having it like when I sold my aprilia RSV Mille 😪 I want it back badly but only as a weekend bike and have another bike as my daily
It’s not slower, the R delivers power very differently. The 1103 motor is more torquey and produces more power in the lower and mid range than the R. From that perspective, the S will get out ahead of the R initially on a straight. However, once you get to the higher rev range the R will show an advantage because it has more RPMs so you can hold the bike in gear longer and it makes its power at the top of the range. So while the S is shifting, you’re pulling away with the R. Additionally, the R has shorter gearing coupled with how fast the engine spools up you can keep the R in the top of the range of its power band where it makes power. In terms of cornering and power on exit, it really comes down to riding style. The S has more mid range to apply power on corner exit, but you have to be careful on just gassing it. The R is more linear and progressive so you can get it on the gas sooner and rev it up the range. The R is also more configurable from a set up standpoint. Now, unless you’re a very capable rider and understand set up really well, you’re not going to get the benefits of the R over the S. For the average rider, you’ll be faster with the S than the R because the S is more approachable and easier to extract performance. I have a V4R and a SFV4S. I’m much quicker with the my S than I am with R because I just don’t have the riding competency to make use of the tools the R has to offer. That said I love riding the R, it’s a treat and it’s fun to challenge myself with it. It’s kind of like the difference between driving a Porsche Cup car vs a Porsche GT3 or turbo on track. Most drivers will be faster and more comfortable with the street car over the Cup car initially until you learn to drive the Cup and utilize the package. Once you do so, you’ll realize the Cup car is significantly faster… much faster on track than any of the street variants… by orders of magnitude. To me the R is a second bike, not a primary. It doesn’t like being ridden slow. The maintenance is much higher compared to the S. The motor in the S is more versatile across a wide range of riding conditions. The R is like binary, you’re either balls to the wall reving the hell out of it or your stopped. It doe not like the in between, it will actually run very hot compared to the S motor when riding around casually on street.
Always find it kinda funny that the kind of people who can spend £40k on a bike aren’t (generally) the kinda peeps who can really ride them properly. 😂
Less than 1% of panigales sold are ever taken to a track. 1% of those track toys are actually ridden to their limit. Which is kinda why I want Ducati to build a Hayabusa competitor. Big displacement V4. Huge power and torque. And a straight line monster (where 99% of the Panigales are ridden)
@@larryhouse3776 I’m 99.86% certain that you made those percentages up. I see a lot of Panigale on track. At Brno a couple of weeks ago there was another SP2, two new V4R and a lot of other flavours of Panigale. There was even a Diavel setting respectable times. 😂 The nice thing about the limit being so high on these bikes is you can go pretty fast without having to test the limits, which is confidence inspiring.
It's not their fault they're out making alot of money and don't have all day to ride a uncomfortable sports bike like you might be able to with a less salary :)
Now in this world of expensive sport cars, current top of the line pick up trucks reaching 100,000 dollars prices that Ducati is not as expensive as you think. And it should be that much. You can spend about the same money on a new Harley Davidson trike.
If I had the 39 grand for this bike I would be more afraid of riding it at posted speeds on the road than at my personal limit on a track. Imagine a distracted cage driver T--boning you at 30 MPH and totaling the bike.
You say more capable than the likes of US. I would imagine me to you would be like my fat Chihuahua racing an old greyhound. (Not that you are old), just modest about your ability. Great bike, don’t know can you fully let rip on a bike that expensive - even with all its rider aids. I stick with my S1000RR.
He always talks about how much they cost.. is that a real performance review? If you cannot ride it to his full potential how you are able to review the performance? You just talk about money. We got it we all have to buy yamaha mt07
He overplays the humble low key authentic reviewer, in reality he is a bmw salesman. People eat up his nonsense like he is the only truthful being to walk the planet. The bike is sick full stop. ( i have the 23 v4r) also have th s1000rr. No comparison. We are so lucky to be able to buy such amazing bikes these days so be grateful and appreachiate the performance. sure some cant use it but who cares there are many who can and do so keep em coming, faster lighter and gorgeous !!
but who has the money? back in the days I would see ducatis so often it was like any other bike brand, but now even the base and el "cheapo" panigale v2" is a very rare sight to behold on the roads in Sweden. But so are the other new modern superbikes as well :D Imagine if we got an v4 599cc panigale and being super light. I would be on that in an instant if the price would not be incredibly high that is, which it probably would be.
Compared to the 1098 it looks overstyled. Ducati sport bikes have looked a bit cartoonish over the last few years, in my humble opinion. Nothing wrong with the way it goes, though.
My 2020 Yamaha XSR 900 "stock" has more torque than this Ducati from idle to 4,000rpm and the same bhp to 6,000rpm. Tell me why I need to buy an overpriced Italian turd when I can have a bespoke Japanese made UJM retro that is the equal up to 6,000rpm. And yes. On public roads I absolutely cap my redline at 6 grand because of the penalties of exceeding 6 grand on public roads on either of these. Cheers.
@@schmuppetify I just told you both of them are road bikes. They are NOT BSB, WSBK or Moto GP bikes. In Australia OUR road laws are now at the stage where exceeding the posted limit by 45KM/H is now an immediate arrest and bike/car impound coupled with a massive fine and loss of license for 2 years! Cobber? A 2007 Toyota Camry can do 120mph+ so where does that leave you? Where does it leave any of us? It's called the track. Mine's called THE BEND in South Australia. Where do you choose to exceed 130mph nowadays mate?
I used to ride sports bikes what fells like a while ago now. 20 yrs since i got a job where i couldn't afford to loose my licence. These bikes are kinda pointless these days. Roads in the uk are bad at the best of times. Everyone has a dash cam and can report you for whatever you may have done to piss them off and the chance to open up are pretty few and far between. Your better off getting an older 600cc so you can wring its neck a bit than one of these.

@@thedragonofechigo7878 it’s a rather sharp looking bit of kit ain’t it…..
Keep the 996 because you’ll regret not having it like when I sold my aprilia RSV Mille 😪 I want it back badly but only as a weekend bike and have another bike as my daily
@@NudaMan fair point…… I’ve wondered about that
@@alanprice9938 they will only go up in price especially since electric is gonna be the new norm sadly
Nice to see race bikes ridden as intended.
There is a bike for every rider in every venue. Neevsesy seems to understand. Does he ride dirt bikes?
I see you have finally seen the light 💡 and got yourself a decent helmet Mr Neeves 😉😬,…..thoughts/comments on it 🤔???
Is he wearing a Shoei?
Does anyone else not like the white AND silver? How about one or the other
it looks amazing in the flesh, amazing.
Is it better than R1 GYTR for 159.000Eur? :D
It’s actually quite a bit slower than the V4S
How so? You are talking straight line speed due to having a smaller engine? Faster or slower should be determined by lap times.
Faster, real riders said that
@@fqeagles21 do you fly the bus or just a wannabe?
@@MrDBramer1 i saw a video of an Italian riders Who competed in a National bike Championship with both bike saying the R Is a lot faster and smoother
We love you.
Love Neevesy
Now in this world of expensive sport cars, current top of the line pick up trucks reaching 100,000 dollars prices that Ducati is not as expensive as you think. And it should be that much. You can spend about the same money on a new Harley Davidson trike.
Spot on, i think its awesome value.
nice one
The only thing I don’t like is the heat! It burns my ass and legs!
But so are the other new modern superbikes as well :D
Imagine if we got an v4 599cc panigale and being super light. I would be on that in an instant if the price would not be incredibly high that is, which it probably would be.
Just buy an H2R
V4-j, please 🤣
If you got it, you might as well flog it
What clown put the tank pad on 😂
The 996R/998R, 999R xerox and 1098R were all $40000 as well. So they weren’t worth it?
Bargain.
No cold start??!! Neevesy! FAIL
very disappointing review of an amazing bike...
Ducati = fix or repair daily
Just wait until that desmo service comes 😰
The maintenance and reliability is not there, rather just get a Honda
Not a very interesting bike.
It's hideous as well
You pair need to go to specsavers.
@@iancharlton5530 I did! And it’s even worse now. Looks like a fat frog with wings. It’s a far cry from the likes of 916, 1098 and gen 1 Panigale.
Cheers.
Lol sure man just go race your XSR900 in WSBK I'm sure you'll clean up.
@@schmuppetify They are both "road bikes" Karen. OK?
@@theaustralianconundrum cool while you're at it call Yamaha and tell them to discontinue the R1 as you've decided it's pointless.
@@theaustralianconundrum What are you even talking about? Are you ok?
I used to ride sports bikes what fells like a while ago now. 20 yrs since i got a job where i couldn't afford to loose my licence. These bikes are kinda pointless these days. Roads in the uk are bad at the best of times. Everyone has a dash cam and can report you for whatever you may have done to piss them off and the chance to open up are pretty few and far between. Your better off getting an older 600cc so you can wring its neck a bit than one of these.
