I vaguely remember watching a show (might have been mythbusters) that tested the whole "pressure differential between space and spacecraft is so strong that it will kill you if you get caught in it" thing. And if my memory serves me right, the conclusion is that since a typical spacecraft is pressurized at 1 Earth Atmospheres, the pressure difference isn't actually strong enough to do any damage. You could easily plug the hole with your finger and be fine. And any kind of decently rigid object could serve as an emergency patch.
Exactly this. 1 atmosphere of pressure difference is not a lot. Also I wouldn't be surprised if they actually made the pressure even lower, as it would probably help with a lot of engineering stuff. Also fun fact they would probably have not pressurised most of the ship as everyone's asleep anyway. Also the pressure difference between crew quarters and mechanical should probably constantly go down a little, so that in case of fire, the smoke is directed away from crew space.
@@TheWinjin 1 atmosphere of pressure difference is 1 atmosphere of pressure difference. A lot or not a lot depends of the area the pressure pushes onto/through. 1 atm on a square meter hole is over 10 tons of force (101325N).
Yeah. Rapidly resurfacing from 10 meters, while not pleasant will not kill you. And that's almost the same pressure difference(for simplicity it is considered to be exactly a 1 atm/100000P difference)
The thing that pissed me off was that they had a robot bartender with fingers that could’ve pressed the button to make them sleep😂 For those who think the robot was restricted to a rail, Chis’s character could hack a rover into a mobile text sender so yeah, it was possible 😂
they do explain that it isn't just a button that needs to be pressed on the outside of the capsule (because if it was you could just design the button to be on the inside) They say that going into stasis sleep requires a medical operation, like anesthetic. What doesn't make any sense, and is bad writing, is why the ship doesn't have such a facility onboard, just incase any passengers do get woken up.
0:35 About the name thing: As far as I know, Jim is a common nickname for James. So I assume that James is the dude's real name but he prefers to be called Jim.
About the tear thing -- something like that has actually happened! on one EVA during STS-100, Christ Hadfield's eye started tearing up because of some coating on the inside part of the visor, or something similar. At first his tears just stuck to that one eye, building something like a bubble around it, then it got big enough to overflow over the other eye, pretty much blinding him. He slightly depressurized his spacesuit for a moment to vent off some air, it somehow helped, so he went back to work.
@@nimyron3536 that's to be expected honestly. They have been chosen from a lot of people so to be able to troubleshoot a problem and solves it probably the minimum
With how futuristic the society is on the ship, wouldn’t the technology and medicine be so advanced that being on the ship for 90 years be more like aging 40 years for us right now? (Nevermind the hibernation pods fcukt them over)
As a molecular biologist, automating medicine like the autodoc is WAY easier than life extension. By miles and miles. The only ways we currently know to do it would need to be implemented in utero, for one, and would come with an EXTENSIVE risk of every type of cancer. Like, it wouldn't be an "If you get cancer" kind of deal, it would be a "How often do you get cancer?" It would occur in every organ in your body, regularly. Whether your immune system could kill it before it mutated past immune suppression would be a coin flip. And I don't care how advanced medicine is, a biological organism just can't keep up with that kind of chaos.
Yeah man some studies says that by 2050 we will probably have amortal people. Besides on space people age slower than normal, so 90 years could go by just fine.
he should have woken up one of the specialty people that can re activate the deep sleep shenanigans. there is no way in hell the ship doesn't have logs of helpful people that can solve the whole movie using a magic McGuffin
Also why the fuck is there only one med pod on that ship? One med pod for 5000 people seems waaaay to low for future medical emergencies on Homestead 2. If they had multiple pods they both could've hibernated in them, using the android to press the buttons for that.
He tried to access the crew pods but they're locked behind a bulkhead he couldn't get through. Which doesn't make any sense at all. The guy managed to rip up the deck and plant a _tree_ in the floor, but he can't activate something that's meant to be opened? The dude just gave up and started thinking with his dick. There was no guarantee his plan would've even worked - what if she simply wasn't attracted to him at all? It would've been smarter to wake up another engineer type to bounce ideas off of. Maybe someone else could've figured out how to override the doors and food systems.
Eric said the same thing on Pretty Much It. I agree it would have been more interesting than what we ended up with. Other versions were that it showed a hole happy life of Aurora and Jim together, but in the end you find out it was actually Jim just imagining it, and the last shot is everyone waking up to find a rotten corpse sat outside her pod with candles and drawings of her using it as a shrine. Or that it should have been a horror film told from Aurora's perspective, with her slowly realising that he woke her up and being about fighting him off at the end. Similar chance for her to consider waking someone up for that classic "the villain wins" ending where it's like the evil has shifted into her now...
6:58 The film probably had them fly passed a star because that is the most plausible way for a vessel of that size to reliably travel long distance across the galaxy. It's essentially what comets do except more planned out rather than happenstance. They slingshot to the next star, to the next star, etc.
I always wondered: they had 1 perfectly working pod and 1 autodoc. One goes in the autodoc, the other in the pod and uses the "commander wristband" to sudo start the procedure. I mean: that wristband let them into the reactor core, granting them enough power to potentially blow up the whole ship. Surely a cryopod is something simpler.
In my understanding this doesn't work, the movie tells you you can only put into sleep if you have some medical preparation which are can't done on the ship. The only exception is the autodoc which can provide the prep work for one person only
>ship has ultra advanced ai that can perfectly replicate human personality >ship systems don't automatically wake up all crew members when a malfunction is detected i hate it when the premise is so contrived. if you wan't the conflict to develop one way make at least sure you haven't provided an obvious way to prevent it from the start.
My biggest problem with this is that they could have both gone into hibernation at the end. The chicks pod was fine and they could have used the the dead space dudes bracelet on it to make it work, and then mario goes to the healy pod to sleep
I felt like the only reason they sat around examining the pods was to set up that there was only one workable pod. Now it just seems weird the crew guy wasn't like "hey we can rig up the auto doc as an extra pod."
@@einstien2409 The problem is the film was re-drafted so many times. Probably in one version there was an explanation on why he can't get into the crew flight deck, but that was probably before elements like being able to re-wire his band to make himself a luxury passenger to get straight into the luxury room got added in. Which now leaves us with the question on why can't he re-wire himself to be crew? If the only explanation is "because then the film wouldn't happen" it's bad writing. There needs to be an internal reason, people might not like it, that's subjective. But no reason at all is objectively bad writing, because it just meant the writer didn't think about it or didn't care. I have a similar issue with a lot of Lord of the Rings (and other high fantasy) where there are about 100 different ways you can solve the plot, usually because magic exists, but the only "reason" the author can ever write in as to why this wouldn't work is, "weeeellllll actually magic just....doesn't work that way..." which is basically the same unsatisfying "I didn't think of that, I didn't like that as much, with that I didn't have a story" explanation. More interesting versions of the story would be: *to make it a straight up horror film,* the same events but we see it from Jennifer Lawrence's perspective, and the ending is about trying to fight off Jim when he's spent years on the ship alone, going insane, learning where everything goes and even building new ways around the ship and traps and stuff. A full on stalker body horror film, where he doesn't necessarily want to kill her (like a slasher villain) but instead wants to KEEP her, to use for his own pleasure etc, maybe a bit of trying to kill her at the end as she fights back, obviously you'd have to set up some plausible way for her to beat him, then maybe she could find out he was lying about not being able to go back into stasis and she manages to go back in? *OR keep the whole movie the same sort of romance/drama,* apart from Jim dies at the end saving everyone. Fade to black. Fade up again, we get some shots are showing the bedroom and hallways a mess again with food packets and stuff like when Jim was depressed. *The final shot is Aurora (maybe visibly 3 or 4 years older so we can see a bit more time has passed than Jim managed alone given how angry she was about being woken up herself) sat at another guy's pod, with the toolbox just as Jim did. @@esmeecampbell7396 Since when were you an expert on fuckin magic? You're argument would make sense if prior Tolkien had written a scene of Gandalf actively doing very very impressive things with magic and we don't, we get him making impressive fireworks, making small balls of light, etc. If you actually read the books you would know that during Elrond's meeting about the One Ring they had a massive debate over various different methods of transporting or keeping the Ring from Sauron and each one was very clearly explained as to why it wouldn't work or had a worse chance of failure than the plan that was decided upon. Don't try and smear Tolkien's work because it doesn't fit with how you *think* magic should work. You're idea boils magic down into a 'get out of jail free card' and is infinitely more boring
@@andrewmeyer3599 That is exactly my point, magic does boil down to a get out of jail free card though. Magic is either: Interestingly written in the plot to be useful, but then very open to "well why didn't they do this" meaning you have to be incredibly clever in how you write it. Or it's written like that, a damp squib that may as well not exist for all the actual IMPACT it has on the plot. And to be clear I AM as much of an expert on magic as Tolkein is...because it doesn't exist. But there's never any point trying to have a sensible discussion with the kind of Tolkein fanboy that thinks the sun shines out of his arse.
This movie could’ve been pretty cool if they framed Chris Pratt be a tragic villain more than a nice guy who made a questionable choice. The RUclips video “Passengers, Rearraged” described it very well
I mean it's more of a romance based sci-fi plot story. Its good because of these 6 things: good vfx, Jennifer Lawrence, cool futuristic science tech, Jennifer Lawrence, half a$$ romance plot and did i mention Jennifer Lawrence?
About the star thing: Our eyes hurt when we look at the sun from this distance, looking directly at a star while being so close to it would blind you instantly. Then again they probably have some barely see through glass that blocks out the super high brightness like in a welders mask. Then again you'd have to get it to like 99.99999999999999999999999999% opacity which then makes you wonder: How much money did it cost to manufacture a piece of glass with that precise of opacity just so they could look at a star.
Also are you ever going to do another "picking on your comments" video? (this totally has nothing to do with the fact that i wanna know your opinions on the stupid shit i post while thinking i'm clever)
When the ship's computer announced that they're about to slingshot around a star and for everyone to go to the observation deck, did the writers not consider that there should have been no one awake to hear it?
maybe it's some kind of latent procedure from when the ships weren't as advanced and had a more tourist setting that was never fully removed from the modern programming and since the ship detected people awake (they were using the recreation/dining and the assimilation class was automatic even though no one should have been awake) it announced the sight-seeing event
how so ? the computer probally saw in its logs or something that there were some pods awoken so maybe thats what made it think it should send this message
Let's be honest, computer is kinda AI enough to "accidentally" wake up an engineer with an abstract mind to fix the ship after unforseen circumstances happened. It probably has a protocol to NOT wake up people in case being aware the disease is infesting another planet, but may cause malfunction to right statis pods.
@@philipthecow If humanity has the tech to travel through interstellar space I don't think creating a super heat resistant material would be a problem.
The part about the morality of waking up Jennifer Lawrence would be a tough decision but the fact that he’s alive and will live out the next probably 40 years of his life on that ship means that he would use a lot of the crew’s resources and would probably sabotage the mission just by eating and drinking.

1 atm on a square meter hole is over 10 tons of force (101325N).
sure but that idea falls flat when bish is flying half way through the room just from the pressure. That much pressure would snap you in half too.
Yeah. Rapidly resurfacing from 10 meters, while not pleasant will not kill you. And that's almost the same pressure difference(for simplicity it is considered to be exactly a 1 atm/100000P difference)
8:09 As a child with divorced parents I can 100% assure they share Arthur like one.
The thing that pissed me off was that they had a robot bartender with fingers that could’ve pressed the button to make them sleep😂 For those who think the robot was restricted to a rail, Chis’s character could hack a rover into a mobile text sender so yeah, it was possible 😂
Fingers don't help an underdeveloped ai to figure out technology outside his coding
they do explain that it isn't just a button that needs to be pressed on the outside of the capsule (because if it was you could just design the button to be on the inside)
They say that going into stasis sleep requires a medical operation, like anesthetic.
What doesn't make any sense, and is bad writing, is why the ship doesn't have such a facility onboard, just incase any passengers do get woken up.
@@p-__ ...thems fighting words. One time High Boi farted so hard I smelt it over here. Never happened with your farts.
How would a robot with no legs, running on a short track behind a bar get to the sleep pods to push buttons?
Bruh chatGPT today could handle it and you're telling me future spaceship AI can't push a button
So that dude casually went blind in space, somehow fixed it and figured "aight it's cool, lemme get back to work" ? What the fuck

Also, only one medical capsule on 5000 people?
@@RochelleHasTooManyHobbies wait, fucking legit?
they could have used the autodoc 1 year and switched…
he should have woken up one of the specialty people that can re activate the deep sleep shenanigans. there is no way in hell the ship doesn't have logs of helpful people that can solve the whole movie using a magic McGuffin
Also why the fuck is there only one med pod on that ship? One med pod for 5000 people seems waaaay to low for future medical emergencies on Homestead 2. If they had multiple pods they both could've hibernated in them, using the android to press the buttons for that.
they probably sleep in the quarters he cant access
He tried to access the crew pods but they're locked behind a bulkhead he couldn't get through. Which doesn't make any sense at all. The guy managed to rip up the deck and plant a _tree_ in the floor, but he can't activate something that's meant to be opened?
The dude just gave up and started thinking with his dick. There was no guarantee his plan would've even worked - what if she simply wasn't attracted to him at all? It would've been smarter to wake up another engineer type to bounce ideas off of. Maybe someone else could've figured out how to override the doors and food systems.
Nahh he just want Jenifer Lawrence ass
This should have been a thriller from the woman's point of view as she slowly pieces together that she was woken up on purpose
no - that would b cringe
Yes!
@@adamahmed366Found the dudebro.

I always wondered:
they had 1 perfectly working pod and 1 autodoc.
The only exception is the autodoc which can provide the prep work for one person only
@@wertz9976 They had spare parts for everything but not a spare autodoc, aaaargh
Which, in common sense would be one of the critical component to support life.
@@u1zha If they literally have every spare part, they could technically make a second autodoc
5k people 1 autodoc is already stupid enough.
>ship has ultra advanced ai that can perfectly replicate human personality
>ship systems don't automatically wake up all crew members when a malfunction is detected
i hate it when the premise is so contrived. if you wan't the conflict to develop one way make at least sure you haven't provided an obvious way to prevent it from the start.
FUCKING EXACTLY!!!
5:00
He could have woken up 10 more engineers to figure out how to get back to sleep
yeah, once they have the crew hatch open...like that kinda resolved the original premise right there. i guess the writers forgot about that.
@@sgx9874 Nah, the movie would be 15 minutes long.
More interesting versions of the story would be:
*to make it a straight up horror film,* the same events but we see it from Jennifer Lawrence's perspective, and the ending is about trying to fight off Jim when he's spent years on the ship alone, going insane, learning where everything goes and even building new ways around the ship and traps and stuff.
Staring at him, struggling to decide whether to wake him up or not. Cut to black.*
Magic is either:
Interestingly written in the plot to be useful, but then very open to "well why didn't they do this" meaning you have to be incredibly clever in how you write it.
Or it's written like that, a damp squib that may as well not exist for all the actual IMPACT it has on the plot.
And to be clear I AM as much of an expert on magic as Tolkein is...because it doesn't exist.
But there's never any point trying to have a sensible discussion with the kind of Tolkein fanboy that thinks the sun shines out of his arse.
i love how Chris grew an entire forest on a space ship and you're worried about how it would impact the high tec computors
This movie could’ve been pretty cool if they framed Chris Pratt be a tragic villain more than a nice guy who made a questionable choice.

3:17 I literally study space for fun and didnt even think of this
About the star thing: Our eyes hurt when we look at the sun from this distance, looking directly at a star while being so close to it would blind you instantly.

Finally. Someone I don't have to speed up to watch. I like your style Boi.
When the ship's computer announced that they're about to slingshot around a star and for everyone to go to the observation deck, did the writers not consider that there should have been no one awake to hear it?
SHHH you're ruining the writer's need for romance
maybe it's some kind of latent procedure from when the ships weren't as advanced and had a more tourist setting that was never fully removed from the modern programming and since the ship detected people awake (they were using the recreation/dining and the assimilation class was automatic even though no one should have been awake) it announced the sight-seeing event
how so ? the computer probally saw in its logs or something that there were some pods awoken so maybe thats what made it think it should send this message
12:24 you figure they'd have some robots in there that aren't connected to the ship systems as a precaution that would be able to fix the ship...
there is but it cant fix phyical things

Easy: the space ship only lets a small amount of light through. The bigger issue is how the spaceship prevents getting too hot.
@@philipthecow If humanity has the tech to travel through interstellar space I don't think creating a super heat resistant material would be a problem.
I hope your videos never keep coming man, you're freaking awesome.
The part about the morality of waking up Jennifer Lawrence would be a tough decision but the fact that he’s alive and will live out the next probably 40 years of his life on that ship means that he would use a lot of the crew’s resources and would probably sabotage the mission just by eating and drinking.
Food for over 5,000 people for a few months, those last few months before getting to the planet. In 40 years would he eat up all that food?
