Well, the lyrical content of Mellon Collie strongly reflects on coming of age themes and particularly the angst and sadness of those going through adolescence. Corgan writes of such subject matter with grace, but he also does it without compromising or rather filtering such emotions that come with it. I think that rubbed off on music critics in a negative way, because in spite of the authenticity and the sincerity of his lyrics, Corgan comes across as pathetic and immature sometimes. But I think that immaturity adds a layer of beauty, gives the music a virginal quality. When critics say that Billy’s lyrics sounds like “sophomoric” poetry, they don’t seem to understand that is sort of the point.
To think Billy wrote almost all of this album living in a parking garage says something and to hell with Rolling Stone critics who downed his lyrics. It is hrd not to be cynical when u are pressured to play all instruments for recorded and hated for it at the same time and to write the lyrics he did only mirrored his situations. billy is a sad soul, he just never got around to blowing his head off like others where now he would be praised as a genius, which he is. cheers.
Mellon Collie is so perfect that it makes my stomach jump just thinking about the significance of it all. I've loved this album since before it was released having pre-ordered it back in '95 because I knew it was going to be a piece of art that I just had to relish in. Thank you Billy; your art has made my life that much more enjoyable.
Amazing! Mellon Collie features some of the most innovative, sophisticated, beautiful and rocking song writing ever. I really don't think I'm pushing it by saying that this is one of the most brilliant albums of all time. There is not one part of the album that feels out of place or stale and the ethereal music is almost of another world. From the beginning piano notes that start the album to the very similar ending this is one album that any rock fan with eclectic taste should possess.
During this period Chamberlin struggled with substance abuse. During the recording of 1993's Siamese Dream in Marietta, Georgia, Chamberlin often disappeared for days at a time into the drug underworld of Atlanta, while the rest of the band feared for his life. He later said of his drug addiction that "It's pretty textbook [...] Guy makes it in rock band, gets very full of himself, starts thinking he's indestructible, and all of a sudden he destroys himself." In the midst of the lengthy world tour supporting 1995's multi-platinum Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Chamberlin's father died, and his substance abuse hit a fever pitch. Of this period, Chamberlin later said, "I learned that escapism was better than emotion, and that's where I hid... It got to the point that I really didn't care. Life was scary for me." Prior to shows scheduled July '96 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Chamberlin and touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin overdosed on heroin; Melvoin subsequently died, and Chamberlin was kicked out of the band, ostensibly to protect his health.
It's one of those songs that intends to be creepy when actually it's not. It's a romance story about Billy's cat and a stray cat. Much more innocent than it sounds at first. lol
why is everyone fucking up this, one of the most inovative ambitious songs by the pumpkins, i'm not saying they were high but so what if they were who gives a shit
Im in complete agreement Kezner32... The whole story and the kind of compositions are out of serie... For me is one of the 5th better albums of all times!! I love TSP!!
@rohiogerv22 Really that makes me love it even more. I have an alley cat and I love her so much. Yes I'm a man, and no I'm not gay maybe lame but not gay ha, ha, ha.
This is one of the most melodic, articulate, and dreamiest songs of all time! Smashing Pumpkins are one of the best bands!
And critics called this album a lyrical low. With songs like this, Tonight Tonight, and Porcelina, really?
That's really hard to imagine I know.

I think you're thinking of Gish and SD. After SD, he had his own home and wife
Agree with all except... no one ever pressured him to play every single instrument on the album. I mean he had a band for that.
@@MarMoifActually Butch Vig pressured him. Drums were still Chamberlain
