  • There are other reviews of the BYD Atto 3 out there, but this one is of the Australian version of the Atto 3 - yes the one that you'll buy (or might have already ordered).
In this review Richard Berry will guide you though the Atto 3's prices and the features, you'll find out how far you can drive on a full charge and how long it'll take to charge it, you'll know the servicing costs and where to service it and even what its like to drive.
He also offers up some surprise findings about the way this budget-friendly electric SUV handles, what the EV driving range is like, and just how practical it is. Remember, Richard is very tall, and this is not a large SUV - it's a compact electric car with a big amount of interior space and some really cool high-tech elements.
With two versions available - the Standard Range, with 345km at $44,381 MSRP and the Extended Range with 420km at $47,381 MSRP - the BYD Atto 3 (Yuan Plus in some markets) is a compelling alternative to the likes of the Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model 3, MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona Electric.

You forgot the third charging option a home walbox 7kw charger that would take 9 hours to fully charge the battery. The strange sound the vehicle makes at low speed is to warn pedestrians that the vehicle is coming along the road.

Probably worth mentioning that, with the exception of interstate travel, no one charges one of these from 0% - 100%. Most would plug this in at home, leave it charging overnight and that'll be more than enough time to cover the trips done that day. It's way more convenient having a "gas station" at home and having your car always running a full tank... unless you live in an apartment complex - then you're sh*t out of luck.

3:43 This is the kind of comment that puts off EV buyers because the amount of time to charge the battery on normal household sockets depend on how much range you use during the day. In my own experience, I use up approximately 60 km per day I have it fully charged within 4-5 hours using a typical 10A household wall socket. The full day charging is only applicable if you fully deplete the battery.

Overall a pretty positive review, but this reviewer appears to be new to electric vehicles - he doesn't seem to know about home chargers - single phase 7kWh or three phase 22kWh. Most EV owners simply install a 7kWh outlet at home and charge overnight in 6-8 hours. At my current off-peak rates that would be $10.14 to charge from 0% to 100% for the Atto 3, giving 400-500km range depending on driving conditions. Much cheaper than ICE vehicles.
    Thanks for posting this review!

You must me new to evs. Most ev charging worldwide is done at home on ordinary household outlets.
1/3 of the population here in Oz rent and they wont be fitting level 2 chargers. No problem.

@@nordic5490 Maybe, but NOBODY runs their EV down to low and then leaves it for a 24hr charge, just journalistic BS, 2kW plug charger overnight gets 70 or 80 miles in , more than most folks commute.

    • @nordic5490
      @nordic5490 Год назад +4

@@bellshooter nope. A very quick google will tell you what the ave daily, ie, the total annual drive / 365 =
      The USA = 39.4miles = 63.3kms
      The UK. = 20.3 miles = 33.7kms per day
Here in Oz = 36kms per day.
The average ev electricity consumption is 20kwhrs per 100kms. The most efficient evs are just 15kwhrs per 100kms.
Thus to recharge 63.3kms would require 20× 0.633 = 12.7kwhrs. Allow for 5% charging losses = 13.3kwhrs would be required per day.
Using a standard level 1 2.4kw charger, 13.3kwhrs = 5.5hrs to replace that daily use. If you were a heavy user, and drove twice the national ave, you would still replace that daily charge used, in 11hrs, ie, overnight using a 2.4kw charge port. So, fine for renters. Renters can of course, also top up at a fast charger once a week when they are shopping.
Ev owners who are also home owners will all fit a level 2, 7kw charger in their house. 7kw will replace that 13.3kwhrs in just 1.9hrs.
There you go, renters and home owners can easily recharge overnight, and, renters can always top up @ a super charger if they didnt charge at home few a few days.
Evs are the ultimate in convienience. Your ev can have a 100% full tank every time you leave the house. Too easy.
Fyi, most ev charging world wide, is done at home atm.

Pure EV might be the future but for today, I'd choose PHEV, especially when you can't avoid hard winter and super hot summer when battery drops sharply when AC on. For this Atto 3 model, its prototype might be, if I wasn't wrong, the Yuan Plus 2022 model in China. The relatively short duration of the battery limits its market share, 400+ KMs seems OK in the city, but that's it. However, the 510KM flagship PLUS model of Yuan Plus 2022 offers you more possibilities to have a ride near the city. It costs around 165,800 CNY, or 35610 AUD.

In an interview I read that EVDirect admitted their service pricing was, in addition to normal costs, also structured to recoup their start-up costs.
Of course that begs the question about what happens once those costs are recouped... nice tidy profit!
As for the warranty, no idea why certain things are different in Australia except that someone is not confident about those parts and doesn't want to have to cover their cost, which is not a good look.

We've just cancelled our Atto 3 order (along with many others) due to the BS thats going on with the Australian importers in changing warranties and revealing super expensive ongoing maintenance requirements, at the very last minute before delivery!
Its a real pity because we were excited about getting a BYD, we like the car, and think they are a good company, but the shenanigans going on with the Australian distributors has put us off completely! We wish BYD just distributed and serviced themselves like Tesla, and cut these middlemen jokers out of the equation!
