Mine tend to fight me as well, particularly if I'm already stressed or tired. Try vocalizing with the compression underneath the chin 3 times a week. (Demonstrated in this video.) Over time, much like a massage, the toxins that are trapped in the muscles causing them to strain will go away. Drink alot of water after to help the toxins flush.
I love your lessons, they remind me of my former voice coach years ago, but better. Just found your videos again. I can't afford a coach, so I started back practicing in my car each day from work for 30 minutes for the past two months and what a difference in my range and control.
wow, I have been using these techniques for years. These types of vocal training is important for serious vocalists. I also notice that clearing my sinuses help with reaching the notes of my choice. Great information.
You've destroyed all my preconceived notions of good singing technique, and I am all the better for it. I have been following your videos as well as the exercises for a good couple of weeks now and my singing has noticeably improved. Thank you very much for taking the time to share your knowledge with us.
oh. my. god. UNBELIEVABLE thank you so much for sharing these exercises it may sound "nothing big deal" but it really is. I dont even know how to thank you enough
Hi Chris, try holding down your throat muscles or "digastric muscles" while you vocalize. To find these, place both of your thumbs underneath your chin and swallow. When you vocalize, anytime you feel them tensing up, push up on them and fight back. You can also try vocalizing with your tongue sticking out to relieve tension in the back of your throat. Good luck!
Hey there, don't worry I have a hard time with the trills to! And you may feel silly at first, just make sure you're alone. :) The lip roll is an excellent way to begin warming up because it relaxes the face muscles. You can also do the lip roll by simple sliding up and down a scale a few times, going a little higher each time.
I just discovered your videos and have subscribed to your channel. THANK YOU for all of this wonderful valuable information! I am enjoying your videos a lot!
Hi Mario, great question. The answer is simple, if you run out of air quickly, it means that you're using (or spending) too much air. You need to focus on very clean, pouty sounds which will suction the vocal cords together a bit tighter, keeping the airflow to a minimum. There is an exercise for this on my video called Top 5 Questions About Singing. Good luck, and follow me on Twitter @SophieShear
never knew how many techniques there were...wish you were in my neighborhood teaching! Love blues as well, I have issues with getting my voice to do what I hear it doing in my head. adlib ect. not Syble lol
If it's an exercises on a scale, only go as high (or as low) as you can go on the scale without feeling pain. How often you should do the exercise....it depends on the exercise. In the beginning I usually recommend 3-4 times a week.
honestly that has been my biggest problem. for some reason, i think due to childhood stress, my digastric muscles are active most of the time and it causes a lot of annoyance and some pain even when im not singing. ill try these exercises, it seemed to help in just a few minutes.
Hey there, thanks for watching! Try easing up on the volume as you reach the higher notes, while maintaining a narrow shape of the mouth. Avoid "splatting" out your lips, or stretching them horizontally. Try vocalizing with my video "MIxed Voice Application." This will give you a good example of this.
New videos coming soon! Keep an eye out! In the mean time, if you have twitter, be sure to tune in this Friday at 3:30pm CST for a live Q&A session with me where I will be answering singing questions. Yu can follow the conversation and ask your own questions with the hashtag #FixMyVoice. Thanks for watching!
Hi there, thanks for watching. For more tips about the diaphragm, also check out my video "The Diaphragm Rip-Off." And to build a mixed voice (which will allow you sing high while singing powerfully) try vocalizing 3 times a week with the exercises in my video "Fastest Way to Add Notes to your Vocal Range."
Hi there, these exercises may be new to your muscles, so it will take time before it becomes more "natural." Try vocalizing with the exercises a few times a week and your vocal cords will begin to understand the difference!
Hi Sophie, just discovered you recently and love your videos! How long or how many of each of the tension buster exercises should I do for a vocal warm up? thanks! Christine
Hi, Sophie! First of all, I want to take you for sharing your knowledge with us. Secondly, I have a question concerning the exercises in this video. When do we practice them? Right before we sing to reduce the tension or do we do them at home at a regular basis for a long term reduction of tension? I thank you for your answer in advance.
Try sliding through your range and sustaining the highest note. Do this on a "muh". Keep practicing until you can sustain a clear note without wobbling.
No matter what i do, there is always tension in my throat. Even when a note is not too high, to get to the next tone i tense my throat a little bit more to get the correct pitch. What can i do to stop this? and what SHOULD be happening as i raise notes??
I have a problem. It seems like my air runs faster than i thought. I can't sing long or i have to strive till my face gets red .What should i do? Any video or suggestion please. Thanks.
Hi Sophie .... I am from INDIA ... A big Thanks to You for this relaxing exercise... Please guide me that when should this exercise be done. sbould it be used as a simple warm up exercise or should be after a session of practice.....aslo for how long it should be done

Anyone started dying laughing when she did the different meows lmaooo 😹😹😹
Some of the exercises can definitely make you laugh! And yet they are so effective!
Does lowering the larynx with dopey sound engages the chain muscles used for swalloing?
Great question. I will have to look into that one! It definitely will cause a yawn or two!
when I do this I still see neck veins pop out. what do you do with this?
allah razı olsun çok yardımcı oldu :)
Thank you you are the best
I have a problem. It seems like my air runs faster than i thought. I can't sing long or i have to strive till my face gets red .What should i do? Any video or suggestion please. Thanks.
