We were fortunate to get an 8N with the property we purchased. Your “user error” info at time 10:27 or so was exactly what we were doing wrong. The pump only works with the PTO on. That saved us from hiring a mechanic. The hydraulics work very well.

Good job, as I was growing up we had a 8N tractor and the lift never was no count and daddy could not afford to get someone to properly fix it so he got all the information together he could and we were always taking it apart and working on it and it would usually make a little difference in it but it never was fixed properly, it was just always a headache, keep up the good work.

Thank you for everyone's time. What do you recommend for lift and drop latency? Its about 3 or so seconds. Also, when the tractor is off. The Back blade will drop after a minute or so. Is this normal? Should I change the fluid. Not sure when last time it was changed.

Rachel, thanks for the tutorial. It was very helpful. I rebuilt the top lid with a kit from your site. It's a 1952 Ford 8n. The drawbars now have the lift power that I expect. Upon reassembly of the inspection cover, the Sherman high/low transmission seems to be stuck in high! The handle is on the inspection cover. Is there a spring that may have dislodged or did I just miss the groove that the handle attaches to? Thanks.

Hey sorry to bug you. My father-n -law has a 8n and the hydraulics works with a load on it for probably 20 min or so and then it’s like it wants to pick up but doesn’t. We replaced they safety valve and put new ford 90w fluid back in. It helps some but still doing it. We move the lever up and down slowly and sometimes it will pick up. It does fine with out a load. Would you think it’s the pump?

We have an 8N we got when we bought the land it was left in. It runs, the hydraulics work too. I am concerned about the noise when the engine is running, the PTO Is off and I let off the clutch, it sounds like the PTO is still running. When I press the clutch pedal, the sound stops. Also, I changed hydraulic fluid and a small 3/16” diameter x 2” piece of steel came out with the fluid. Should I be concerned about the sound or the piece of steel since everything works good?

Greetings, i have a 1948 to20 s/n 369. was my grandfathers. Lift doesn't work. i noticed a plug on the upper lift cover where from the circular exploration hole you can feel a tube going up into the cover from the pump to the lift. i know some say to take the lift cover off and run the tractor to see if oil is coming out that tube. if so, the pump is good. if not, pump might be bad. anyway, i took the little plug out without taking off the lift cover and with the pto engaged, no fluid comes out. do i assume the pump is bad? i have fluid to the bottom of the inspection hole and there is some turbulence when the pto is engaged. Is this a good test? Also, do i have to take the lift assy off if i am just rebuilding the pump? Or is it best practice to take both out as long as i am tearing things apart?

On the 9n, if you’re only doing the top rebuild, I suspect it will make things a lot easier disconnecting the linkage to the pump valve if you get the PTO shaft out of the way. Go ahead and pull it. Even though it isn’t necessary unless your doing the pump it will give enough room to get at a hand in there and disconnect things.
