Fan, have seen the film when it came out - couple of notes, other than you can search Kallio - Eira in the maps for walking directions. The reason for highjacked metro is that this was right before the metro opened; you can see in the scenes the station is unfinished. Second, it has some of the biggest rock stars if the time, besides actors like Pellonpää that he used many times, so the guys aren't always that good at taking directions or remembering lines, adding to the loose feel of the film. And yes, a lot of alcohol was consumed, I think it was Page Mustajärvi (who plays Frank) who commented somewhere after that it's good it didn't take longer to shoot, as it was tough on the liver.

I was born in Helsinki in 1968, and have seen Calamari Union many, many times, this being one of my 2 most favorite Kaurismäki movies of all times (Leningrad Cowboys Go America is the other). The scene with the scooter and Chuck Berry's Maybellene playing had a profound impact on me back in the 1980's when I first saw this, got me interested in motorcycles and rock'n'roll and it has continued to this day. Having been a delivery driver and taxi driver in Helsinki, it is also really interesting to see how the city has changed over the decades, Kaurismäkis camera work on the cityscapes is quite amazing. Some places are instantly recoginzable whereas others have completely changed. Except Eira, which I drive trough every 2 weeks for a customer visit (me being their occasional IT-admin). It is still a place for the really rich 🙂. Thank you for an interesting review!

My all time favorite movie. I was 15 when it came out, and i absolutely loved it. So weird, and funny. I have watched the movie about 50 times and i still enjoy every time. Truly (and somehow weirdly) a masterpiece!

I'm already quite excited to rewatch it haha. Seen as you've seen it so many times, are the two guys left at the end meant to have actually reached Eira? I wasn't quite clear on that and so the ending left me a little wanting.

Those two guys reached Eira but it was a big disappointment to them. So they decided to row to Estonia.

This seems a lot of fun. Great series Luke, Kaurismaki is a unique director for what I've seen.
