  • There are a lot of misconceptions for what higher bit depth images actually get you, so I thought I would explain it. More bits adds more information to the image so it's usually easier to process video and photos in post and avoiding banding.

      actually it's 254... 0 and 255 are considered black and white.
      So yeah.
      but since nothing in the world is black nor white(perfect light absorber/reflector) then these are shades of grey BUT WAIT! since your screen can never be 100% calibrated you might never be able to view any shade of grey!
      No matter how you calibrate it you can only jump in 1/256 steps of color in each channel so you can never achieve the perfect balance.

    What the difference between fake 8 bit FRC (6 bit + 2 bit interpolation) vs true 8 bit? How to know if the monitor is true 8 bit not the 6 bit? Thanks.

    • @ChildrenOfDesire
      @ChildrenOfDesire 6 лет назад +1

      The difference between fake 8 bit FRC and native 8 bit color reproduction is that the 6 bit + 2 bit FRC monitor can only natively display true shades of color belonging to the 6 bit color spectrum. However, the FRC allows it to emulate colors in the 8 bit spectrum by flashing two 6 bit colors (say for example color 200 and 202) on each side of an 8 bit color value (in this case 201) fast enough for them to perceptibly blend and give the impression it is showing the true native 8 bit color shade.

    biggest problem is stupid OEMs with their stupid tricks, I got a monitor that windows detects as being 12 bit depth capable, but switching between 8, 10 and 12 makes absolutely no difference to what I can see, so this is an 8bit panel that accepts higher bit depths and downscales it, similar to chinese led projectors just spraying 1080 all over the damn place to hide the single mention of it being 800x480 native or something useless like that, this sort of practice should be outlawed

    your own recording is actualy a very good quality i imagine people are asking aobut the camera but i am much more interested about the video format and the program you actualy used to encode the final file befor uploading it to youtube. why im asking is the following. from my experience so far every output i ever tryed on adobe prmiere or media encoder produces a file that supossingly wont get reencoded by youtube after upload (using their eoncoder demanded settings) but producing the same format with all the details like p and b frames stuff like that youtube reencodes the video regardless that it matches all their demands. and here is the catch while they reencode video formats that are produced by other software like lightwave rendering ffmpeg conssole command or vegas video. all those programs end up with a file of a full color range 0-255 while all output of media encoder and premiere produce 15-235 limited color range stuff now .. thats why im interested to learn which format you ended up uploading and which program you used for the final encoding process befor uploading the video. thanks in advance

    There is a second caveat - you won't get 10-bit image with just 10-bit monitor - you will need a graphics card that supports 10-bit output too (quadro, firepro) or a capture/playback box that can handle this.
    Otherwise you will be pushing 10-bit image through 8-bit card output to 10-bit monitor. This restriction affects only the monitoring signal and not the rendered file output.
    Please correct me if i'm wrong.

    Let me reattle off a few questions and any answers would be most appreciated
    In what ways would 10 bit help with colour grading?
    Does it help with dealing with low light situations or alleviating high iso images?
    Does 10bit help with making shots look more "cinematic" or for blowing images up to cinema screen size?
    Let's say I own a GH4 (which shoots 8bit) and a GH5 (which shoots 10bit) what differences would I see if I shoot side by side and put them through the exact same grading process in post production?
    And finally how much of a difference would you see if you wanted a really desaturated look to your image? Would you even really need 10 bit? Basically in what cases would you not require 10 bit or in what cases would 10bit be more of a hindrance?
    Thanks in advance for any answers. Great video by the way. Chock full of clear-cut, useful information.

    • @InteractiveDNA
      @InteractiveDNA 2 года назад

      The difference will be none if you exposure the picture in both cameras. Most movies are in 8 bit. The difference and benefit if all in post if you want to adjust the shadows and highlights. Also the benefits is if you record in 4:4:4 color spaces for green screen. Meaning the mode data you have the best you are for the future. Think this way, 8 bit the cake 🎂 is done, 10bit is the ingredients. 8 bit vs 10 bits means nothing if the camera has bad lens and not so great sensors. The bigger the sensor less pixels so less details on the picture, the smaller the pixel more pixels so mother definition on the picture. Learn to film or take photos and 8bit and 10bit will not matter much.
