I've kinda been saying this for a while, but the Lore of Redguard is so seminal in developing the setting of Elder Scrolls and much of Tamriel's lore. The Pocket Guide to the empire literally came with the hard copy of the game and essentially kicked off the massive saga. A great sequel to what Daggerfall did.
Not saying Oblivion is the best is an injustice. And I never blink, never wink at injustice!
If Oblivion is so good, where are all the remasters and remakes?
@@fawnieee Just joking, Skyrim has no play value as soon as any other ES is aviable
@@fawnieee he was joking lol
@@ThePrestoPrestissimo If the Elder Scrolls IV is so good, how come we don't have an Elder Scrolls V
@@davis3138 Straight to Part 6, Skyrim so good we had to skip past 5
Your original Redguard video is a classic. I still watch it regularly.
"What is this place, Reddit?" 😂
Of all the games in the TES Series, Redguard deserves a remake.
100%
My favorite uncle actually had this game when I was a kid. I played it enough that to this day I still remember the entirety of Cyrus's famous speech 23 years later 😂
genuinely that speech gives me chills every time I hear it.
A modernized version of Redguard with today's graphics and mechanics would be amazing. Too bad it'll likely never happen.
today's graphics suck. These graphics have more art and soul in them
@@PalendromeYou are just overly nostalgic
3:00 - Yet for all the great Hero Oblivion makes you, I've still heard people say that it was terrible because you didn't get to be THE saviour. Martin was the true hero, the one who fought back the darkness and freed Cyrodil. You just got him where he needed to be and your character will probably just be remembered as a statue and a small plaque somewhere with everyone forgetting what they really did. I loved that, and it made the world feel bigger than just you.
Yet, I've heard so many people complain about that. For all the mocking Elder Scrolls gets for making you the chosen one, it seems as though that's what the vocal majority want.
I, for one, am actually tired of how much Skyrim makes the Dragonborn be a Gary Stue/Mary Sue and I love how we are just a some guy in Oblivion at the end of all, a famous some guy, but still a some guy
Makes sense that Todd Howard's favorite Zelda game is breath of the Wild considering Skyrim seems to be his favorite Elder Scrolls game
1:57 - "This is bigger than your sister, Redguard." Is that the Elder Scrolls version of a Yo Mamma joke?
Id love to play a remake of this. I was bored once and managed to port the map over to unreal engine 5 with all the foliage but stopped there. I think theres space in the world for a small scale action ES game.
Importing 3D assets is one thing, but you'd have to re-create all the scripting for NPC-s, objects, quests, every single door... Skyblivion is possible in the decade-long development because the engines are similar enough, but porting everything to a completely new engine is Starcitizen-kind of development time.
@@zdanee I know
A game I’ve been meaning to go back to for a while, partly due to loving the setting when I played it and partly because I named one of my sons Cyrus and I want to play as the character sharing his name again, I remember he was an awesome character.
aww Cyrus is such a good name!!!
Also to be fair to human Khajiit, they were retconned as being a type of Khajit, known as the Ohmes and Ohmes Raht. Some of them even paint stripes on themselves so they look less like Bosmer.
Looking like a Bosmer is a scary fuckin prospect in Elsweyr, can't imagine it's easy for these poor kitties.
We all know Cyrus is the only character better than Heimskr.
In all honesty though I hope Bethesda does revamp or focus more on the combat for TES VI, especially if it takes place in Hammerfell, quite possibly the most martial society of all the provinces. Even if it has to take cues from the Soulsborne games, so be it
ya they desperately need a new combat system.
Glorious beard. happy 2024 cantina, never change
To be fair to the Morrowind defence, the opening cutscene confirms your status as the hero but all the NPCs and even living "gods" doubt you.
When you go through the trials to prove you're the Nerevarine, there's still some room for doubt.
Yes you're the hero, but it's never confirmed you're the folk hero reborn.
Yeah I don't think even you know at the end if your were "chosen" or just managed to do it all on your own.
I just like hearing familiar voice actors that seem to have been at Bethesda from the beginning.
I never understood the need for Cyrodiil to be a jungle in the first place. Valenwood and Black Marsh are already jungles! Why do we need another? The only downside is that it makes Cyrodiil pretty similar to High Rock.
But anyway as always I enjoyed the video. I've always wanted to play Redguard but the performance issues on modern PCs, the bad Steam reviews, and well... your previous video on it made me want to skip it 😂
100%. tbh, the oblivion modders, with their mods like Unique Landscapes, HESU Landscapes, Landmarks of Cyrodiil...... have made an EXTREMELY interesting and compelling and PACKED worldspace.
@@PalendromeUnique Landscapes rocks I need to remember to add those mods when I do another playthrough because I haven't seen them all. HESU has some greats too but some feel very out of place
What people get wrong is that only nibenay was supposed to be a jungle which works given its location ... colovia is probably presented as it was supposed to in oblivion
What people get wrong is that only nibenay was supposed to be a jungle which works given its location ... colovia is probably presented as it was supposed to in oblivion
@@jadonderby2599 I never knew this. Which area is nibenay again? The area new black marsh was pretty swampy and felt like a jungle in a sense. I really liked what they did with Cyrodiil in the game with all the variety of the landscape. You got the gold coast around Anvil, the snowy mountains in county Bruma, swampy areas, forestry areas. Really felt like a sample of the different areas of Tamreil
Fantasy used to be extremely horny during 80s and 90s. I don't know how and why that paradigm began. But check the art for fantasy books, table top games, and PC games from those years, and you'll see.
Love the vid man thank you for your hard work 🙏
You're making a strong case Cantina I have to give you that
Finally someone understands! I tried this game out a few years ago and despite the poor performance on pc it was the most fun i've ever had with an elder scrolls game. It was just so charming.
I'm honestly a little surprised that no one's made a better Voodoo wrapper/emulator for games from this era. There are a number of games from that time made specifically for 3DFX and this can't be the only one having problems.
After a lot of investigating I was able to confirm the voodoo wrapper wasn't what was causing problems. Which is why I'm optimistic about a virtual machine having better luck.
TBF to Oblivion, in theory, like, the Champion of Cyrodill is a key player, but not the primary plater, of Oblivion. Without Martin, we'd be fucked
Ngl. They should mention or somehow bring back the main character of this game.
Great video btw! I'm only a quarter of the way through so far. But I'm loving it.
Cyrus get's a few mentions. The pirate dlc for Oblivion is based around him as well as a sea shanty that can be heard about Cyrus in the waterfront. Forgot about that till just now but would have been a good inclusion in the video. There's also a creation club mod that's about Cyrus.
@@TheCantinaChannel that's awesome and I genuinely had no idea. Glad the devs/fans haven't forgotten about him. Cuz I agree with you about him being the most relatable and enjoyable character in the series.
And I'm definitely glad he isn't a power fantasy character. Not even Kratos is the amount of power fantasy as the DragonBorn sometimes lol.
Cantina!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There you are, havent seen you in my feed in so long
"you got it guys i believe in you'' was magical🎉😂
Guys I think I have a problem I can't stop watching this beautiful man
I'm jealous of all his hair styles! 🤗
We are getting, Skyblivion and Skywind. We now crave Skygard (Redrim?)!
Damn the blue milk is back!!
This vid felt like a blast from the past reminded me of ur "older" videos
Azura told a lot of people they were Nerevarine you were just the only one who succeeded
Azura didn't tell anybody else, there were a lot of people who were convinced they were but not because of Azura, even still though that would still make you the "chosen one".
Hello Cantina 👑 hope all is well.
It's a little wild that they actually made a game named Tamriel's equivalent of "The Elder Scrolls: Black Man."
I've really never thought of it but ya that is weird. I tried thinking of another situation like this that wouldn't sound weird but nah, it's weird.
❤Ty for the video
I really do wish Bethesda would do more side games like this. Like still Story driven and have rpg elements but play as a already made and named protagonist as a side story set in the lore of the elder scrolls. Like I would love another adventure game set in any time period would be cool and I think could work.
I've watched the first video, and watching this one ive not been convinced that this game is the best, the pros do not out weigh the cons
I wish I could tell you to play and see for yourself but unfortunately their is no good way to play this game right now.
@@TheCantinaChannelyeah even if I was to apprehend the parts to play it, it would probably be very expensive
This is why I dig gothic 1 and 2
I'd love to see stuff like the Adventures series continue especially with so much time between games, haven't played this one myself yet but definetly need to, I have Prince of Persia 3D in the box though and its fun.
There were supposed to have been a Whole series. The Elder Scrolls really should be way more than it is.
@@TheCantinaChannelBlackmarsh I think was a planned one, adventures would probably work better for such a weird place than a main game
The PC game pass version on the Microsoft store uses DOSbox as well, but I was able to have enough fun playing it regardless. The part where you get changed into a squirrel is the best.
"Cha-nge-me-LALOO!"
Gonna add Redgaurd to my steam wishlist
hot take, keep em going
I tried to play Redguard 10-15 years ago, but it would not run on my computer, not even in a DOS box emulator in compatibility mode. Today I found out it was on STEAM.
I see the zelda shirt, I would love to see a zelda video from you!
If I was going to do one it would probably be on windwaker.
Windwaker is great! I'd watch a windwaker video from you!
Blasphemy, we all know Oblivion is the best!
nah
@@TheCantinaChannel 😮
lol what Sorcery is RUclips doing? I was thinking a few Hours ago that I want to play this and then this gets recommended to me
4:44 what video game is that?
Hyrule Warriors age of calamity lol
Are there any games similar to Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim but maybe in a better engine or something? Doesn't have to be terribly modern but wouldn't really want to go much older than the three games I listed prior. I'm really craving an epic fantasy game but I find myself never really engrossed in the 3rd person variety (though I would still take recommendations). I actually have Baldur's Gate 3 that I'll be picking back up again after breaking. Still pretty fresh into that game and have kept myself fairly unspoiled.
unfortunately not really. there are some indie stuff that is a bit similar like Tainted Grail and there is Arx Fatalis although I haven't actually tried either so I'm not sure how much they really fit the bill.
Just commented to say I’m relatively unspoiled on the main storyline, too lol.
I honestly came back to Skyrim after being interested in modpacks, kinda reinvigorated my love for the game, giving it a new look and feel. Wildlander is the one I went to.
3:14 "the most cunning" ok that bit was funny...
I love old games and linear stories, so if there wasnt the downside of it being almost unplayable (im not new to fixing old games but figuring out virtual machines for one game when its not even a given it would work, is a bit above my willingness to commit) i would have loved to play it for myself. Which is why I wish you would have gone a bit more in depth about the story and especially Cyrus as a character, what makes him so good/interesting in your opinion.
Since saying that he has more going on than mainline TES protagonists doesnt really say much when those are, by design, blank slates. Im someone who enjoys longer videos that go into depth, especially since you have been someone ive watched for many years now and respect your opinion id really love to see you go more beyond the surface level for a lot of your takes :)
great video regardless, holding up old video games is always a positive in my book! (especially without constantly mentioning that it "needs" a remaster beyond the basic, understandable and imporant "please make it playable at all". Old games are good as they are, modern graphics and gameplay dont always mean "better")
Huh, interesting thoughts. I'm glad that you've played it and told me these things about it, but I don't think I would want to play it at this point... and I definitely prefer the more open world than a linear type of elder scrolls game, I think.
The protagonist in the other games is supposed to be you. They don't need a preset personality. You can make one up.
honestly ive wanted to play redguard a long time but its just so broken lol, it does seem like a really good game and i love the as you put it zelda style, everything has purpose and i like that
epic
Curved swords...
Redguard needs its own remastered with good Graphics as Skyrim
OR....
as the next elderscroll 6
🤔 when did you play the Steam Version? A Review claimed that they've updated it and that it is working properly
hmm, there does appear to have been an update but it doesn't say anything about fixing bugs, just adjusts some of the starting settings. The bug won't always appear so it's possible the reviewer just got lucky. As for the game itself it runs about the same as the GOG version, which is to say awfully. But then again who knows Bethesda has never been very forth-coming with their change logs.
@@TheCantinaChannel ok, then I'll just buy the Steam Version if they function equally and hope the Bug won't happen in my first Playthrough👍🏻
i remember looking at gameplay and thinking wow this is amazing i still haven’t played it but it seemed odd everyone shit on this game
at the time it was actually pretty well received. Was even nominated for game of the year. Hate for it only started to grow later.
Better dialogue animations and VO than Starfield, for sure.
Bought the game on steam, sad to hear it’s unplayable for the vast majority of people including me. :(
7:42 we all know how those Kirkbride fanboys get
Redguard has always been my favourite, period.
There's been 3 Morrowind mods attempting to at least remake the island, but all died off after at least a year.
For some reasons I'm pretty worried for the next Elder Scroll after watching this ^^
Yippe Nub-Nub!!!
Hmmm, interesting... I'll give it the benefit of the doubt!
You are welcome!
Hey, I know about Redguard!
Agree with all, except for the take against developer putting horny things in game! :D
True fact: Oblivion on mobile is more entertaining than Alduin's fight.
Maybe if redguard came out on ps it would have done betfed
Todd actually mentioned at the time they should have put it on consoles. Probably why Morrowind made it to Xbox
@@TheCantinaChannel it could have done very well and maybe even had a sequal. Ps needed an action game like this
Out of all the games this one seemed the least interesting to me but now I think I'm going to give it go.
Is Mason drinking blue milk?
Damn right
I'm surprised Bethesda never made more games like Redguard. Skyrim was a resounding success and the only other Elder Scrolls game since Skyrim release 12 years ago was... an MMORPG. It's a no-brainer to do a smaller-scale spin-off with a linear plot. A few years after Skyrim, it would've sold well even if it was far from perfect. Now, Bethesda slept on the TES franchise and it lost its popularity among players, so their only way back is doing another grand-scale title.
In a recent interview Todd Howard explains his reasoning of why Redguard failed, which was "it was too small". Which certainly explains why Starfield is massive. Even though the most obvious reason is it was only accessible for a very limited audience.
come on play castles
Nah
It's weird that they name a TES game after a particular human race lol. It would be like, "The Elder Scrolls: White Person".
I see cantina I click cantina
Redguard is good, but Daggerfall is the best.
I was expecting you to show me how the game was good. Unfortunately you missed that mark.
I'm sorry you prefer bad video games 😞
@@TheCantinaChannel laughs in 6/10 scoring
Idk man I never played redguard and just now going through my first ever oblivion playthrough but it really seems like you’re saying this game is only good because it copied the story of star wars and the mechanics of prince of Persia
Saying either of those would definitely being taking what I said out of context. It takes the core elements from Star Wars but the actual story is not even close to a copy. And if you've played the 2d prince of persia's you would know it clearly did far more than just copy it. And prince of persia 3d wouldn't release for another year.
IS the Romani Thing racist, if it's actually true?
Eh, doesn't look interesting to me unfortunately. I hate games that force you to play their per-designed main character. Half the fun in making up your own. And the first character I ever made in Daggerfall was a swashbuckling Redguard swordsman anyway. So been there, done that.
Also I've come to dislike 3rd person over-the-shoulder views in games. Takes me out of the immersion. I also like the combat in Oblivion since it isn't just one or two slashes and done usually. Even Morrowind's because as a newbie arrival there who never held a sword in my life I should have a hard time even hitting mudcrabs at first let alone killing them. I "earned" my skills in that game and that felt really good to me. But to each their own.
So if I want to ever play this "Cyrus" I can just create him in Oblivion where he can have fun in an open world of guilds and side quests and wonderful, quirky good humor filled with tons of memorable and fleshed-out NPCs. But only after I finish my current playthrough of Oblivion with a very very V-E-R-Y dumb Khajiit named Catnip.
Anyway thanks for the new video though I totally disagree with the argument in favor of Redguard being the best. Oblivion forever! (With some Morrowind sprinkled in). But I really do appreciate your videos for sure. Just disagree with your POV in this one. Keep up the good work.
Meh... Probably a great game if he is remaked but at the moment, too many problems
Bethesda has gotten so bad at making games that you consider Redguard to be a gem 😂
the true delusion is thinking Bethesda was every good at making games
Personally i find The Elder Scrolls Online to be the best TES game but I know the single player community gets their panties in a bunch over that game so *shrug*
I think it's funny when people hate that game because it changed lore, as if every single main game hasn't done the same thing.
@@TheCantinaChannel Exactly! I cannot wait for TES6 to basically confirm that ESO is a main series game!
It's not.
The best Elder Scrolls is Morrowind, only because a modernized Redguard will never happen with the Bethesda we have now. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a n'wah and will suffer greatly.
that's a weird way to spell morrowind.
First (to say first lol)
Bro what I played like 2 hours of redguard and couldn't handle it man it was so bad Morrowind is the best.
you can blame terrible emulation for that.
Ok but I beat Redguard a few years ago and it's an absolutely terrible game.
