NBA Players on the Court: Duke: Shane Battier, Carlos Boozer, Mike Dunleavy Jr, Jay Williams, Danthay Jones and Chris Duhon. Arizona: Gilbert Arenas, Richard Jefferson, Luke Walton and Loren Woods. Will never see that again.
Both teams were loaded. Arenas' injury hurt big time, but Woods was unstoppable on both ends. It was 75-72 with 2:49 left, and Arizona didn't score again. What a game!
I was very surprised Duke was favored, given how well AZ was playing. Even thugh they were a 2 seed they were easily a top 3 team. When Loren Woods was on at both ends they were almost impossible to beat

This was a rare championship game that matched the current #1 team against the preseason #1 team. Even though Arizona was a 2-seed in this tournament these were probably the two best overall teams in CBB that season and they had both basically steamrolled through the first five rounds to get here.
Duke won their 5 national championships in 1991 in Indianapolis, 1992 in Minneapolis, 2001 in Minneapolis, 2010 in Indianapolis, and 2015 in Indianapolis. The Blue Devils have won their titles in Minnesota and Indiana. Unfortunately, they pulled their team from the field due to covid this past tournament in Indianapolis. 2026 is the next trip to Indiana for the championship. Coach K could be retired by then. It'll be remarkable if he's still coaching then.

The 2001 Final 4 was essentially the foreplay to game 6 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals. Shane Battier played 80 minutes that weekend and was called for a total of 4 fouls. Lonny Baxter was called for his 5th foul when he boxed out the air.
