      You're exaggerating! In my region, before the government implemented national prices per kilo, we can buy well-milled local harvest at a price of 38.00 pesos. Red rice cost around 40.00 to 47.00 but now, the once cost 38 has risen to 45 because of central Luzon's problems with smuggling and hoarding. The locals and other region consumers who rely on affordable local harvests has been affected due to one's fault. Such price you mentioned probably imported those that are finely polished and added with aroma. Even before the national price implementation, I've never heard or seen such price like that for the most expensive imported rice here in our place. Sweet potatoes can fill up an entire family and its cost is similar to rice. You also don't have to cook other dishes to go with the rice so it's more cost-effective. Filipino cuisine, unlike other cuisine, is a bit rustic due to method of cooking, availability of ingredients, economic situation, and lack of exposure to different cuisines.
    I also grew up eating rice on a daily basis but when I became an adult and got exposed to different cuisines, it opened a whole new world for me.
    Also I'm now more frugal and can attest that forgoing rice is not more expensive. You just have to be smart with how you spend your money and look for better deals.
    There are many plant-based alternatives that would not break Filipinos' banks and that are complete protein unlike rice. The problem is majority of the populace is in the marginalized sector so theyre not keen on online shopping or researching about nutrition. For most people, balance diet is a luxury, which shouldn't really be the case especially in a country rich in agriproducts. Most of these imported ingredients wont be found in wet market and not readily accessible to poor people, despite being cheaper compared to its local counterpart.

    • @SeaKrait571
      @SeaKrait571 6 месяцев назад

      Exactly. Sweet potatoes have one of the highest calories per land area values among food staples and is less finicky than rice. The belief that its only fit as a snack is only cultural bias. It’s a staple in other cultures, even in some areas of the Philippines.

      @@homebrews9957 But not with legumes. Rice (or pasta) and legumes is a very cheap, nutritious and clean meal.
      You can work all day by that until dinner.
      You can't eat 100 g of dried beans with potatoes, but you certainly will be full with rice and way lesser than 50 g of legumes (beans, chickpeas, peas or whatever you fell like).
      Your body can't absorb the cheap protein inside beans without carbohydrates, you need to combine them with rice or pasta.
      Filipine, having had a heavy influence from the Spanish domination, are rice and beans country, like all the Center and South-American, Portugal and Brasil included despite being linguistically Portuguese.
      Also it's better for Filipine economy to eat what their climate, soil and water suggest to produce, since their supply chain are way safer than bein dependant from foreing import and cheaper.

    The rice that we, above average Filipinos' buy, are "pandan rice" or "jasmin rice", which are both good smelling, small grains and soft and delicious! This costs me 65 euros for 40 kgs...this family, is NOT poor, but considered to be "middle class" in Manila! She even has a computer, and her kids "do not" look like "malnourished", she's even fat! Some families, here in Belgium, don't have computers, even, and can't afford "bread"!!! The economy "worldwide" is getting worse, and its' because of the wars, there will be famine! I noticed it this years, that "celebrating" Christmas and New Years here in Belgium, is sooo expensive; it has raised prices up to 35%! And, monthly food expenses ranges from 200 euro minimum, and 600 euro maximum, for one person only! How are those families, that have many children survive on 1.000 euro per month, with car expenses and food, so "patas" lang!!! The economy worldwide has the same "system": and that's 60.000 pesos ,or 1.000 euro a month! This is just enough for food and some clothings, and a few cents for the transportation! I hear "people" in Belgium, that, don't eat anymore for a three meal per day, but depends only on "bread"! If, you want to eat rice, you're gonna have to eat the hard rice they sell on the market! Also, the quality of food, that Belgium and America have is "lowest" quality, therefore, I invest on Fresh Fruits and Vegetables, and cut on meat!!! You have to be "wise" to survive in a modern world, and avoid buying "cancerous" foods, such as cheezes and charcuteries, and processed foods!

But since it went up we combined breakfast and lunch with a portion of packed lunch for my husband . And at night I only cooked 2-3 cups. For ordinary Filipino like me we rely on rice. That's why we called it "rice is life "

      @inspectshow You are very privileged. It's good that you consider more healthy choices. But unfortunately, there are some Filipinos who can't afford even basic food. For long time, those survive on recycled meat (leftover meat thrown in rubbish) and even eat dog food rice because it's cheaper. There were sugar and onion crisis in the Philippines last year. Vegetables are also not cheap unlike India and fellow South East Asia countries. I don't believe that white rice is bad for health. Even Okinawa, Japan uses rice as their staple food all the time, and is still one of blue zone where their inhabitants live to be over 100 years old in good health. So rice is important aspect of Asia like bread as staple food for West.
