  • Papaver commutatum ‘Ladybird’ is a dazzling cottage garden favourite, a charming bright red summer-flowering poppy with a striking quartet of black spots. We fell in love with these poppies at Great Dixter, in East Sussex, South East England, where this video was filmed in June. But are Ladybird poppies as easy to grow as many sellers suggest? Why do they sometimes fail to germinate? We investigated and here are our findings. Can’t wait to get sowing!

I've not been successful with Ladybird Poppies but have no problem growing other varieties. The Welsh ones come back every year and I love it when they pop up in random places. I'm going to try the windowsill method next Spring as the Ladybird ones are my favourite. I only found your channel today so I'm binge watching your old vlogs and am thoroughly enjoying them.

We obviously have a shared love of the Welsh Poppies’ surprise appearances! There were also surprises when germinating ‘Ladybird’ on the windowsill. The seeds were in compostable pots (to avoid root disturbance when planting on) with half the pots covered by a saucer (which you will understand from the dedicated poppy video) and half left uncovered. Although the uncovered seeds began to germinate amazingly speedily after 5 days, there was another unexpected twist: after 4 days a bit of a fungus-like smell began coming from the covered batch, so we lifted the saucers and found there were tiny jelly balls (slime mould possibly?) beginning to cover the earth, probably as a result of increased humidity with the saucer on top. But even more unexpectedly, there were already tiny green signs of life emerging from one or two seeds. Due to the mould, we put them straight outside but it didn’t seem to cause the plants any issues. The biggest frustration was whole pots of seedlings disappearing overnight (slugs or snails we think, although we never caught them), and most immature plants had rather feeble stems (keeling over after hail storms), so we added horticultural grit to the surface to support the stems and as they matured the problem resolved. Good luck next Spring, hope the poppies bring lots of joy.

@@ApplePeaFernSea Thanks for the advice. It'll be great if the poppies make it as they're my favourites.

@@ApplePeaFernSea I'll definitely keep you informed. I've been watching Diane on her Down to Earth channel and she's been germinating other seeds in damp vermiculite with great success. I may give that a go too. It's so nice to make another gardening friend. I'm sure that I'm going to learn a lot from you. Thank you.

I mix 1/3 of each sand farmyard manure and compost put in small plastic pots or what ever than once they have their true leafs put them in the border
poppies love rich sand soil they neve have failed I am in USA zone 8-9 they are pretty hardy and growe in a short time can even be sown late
Never sow seed if you can in heavy soils best results is sow in trays first
    God Bless
good luck with your summer gardening

Hi Patrick, thank you for sharing your knowledge and tips for poppy sowing success, hopefully we will have the same green fingers (perhaps that should be sandy fingers) as your good self, with poppies germinating and flourishing this summer across both sides of the pond. Sending best wishes.

I've had no luck with poppy seeds. We're on uncultivated thick clay and I'm reluctant to add any more fertiliser because we're on a hill and any excess nutrients get washed into the pond and stream below and pollute the water. But we do have a lovely big oriental poppy that never fails and looks very dramatic. I look forward to your results this summer, good luck.

Thank you Aunty J-C, we garden on thick clay as well so we plan to dig in plenty of compost before sowing and perhaps heap up the bed a little. It’s very thoughtful the way you protect your local water sources, and your lovely oriental poppy sounds like a scene stealer who wouldn’t really want any competition around!

I love your beautiful garden and all of your delightful videos. Unfortunately though, with this video I couldn't hear what you were saying about growing those gorgeous poppies because the piano music was so loud over the top of your lovely musical voice.
