My visit at Sissinghurst Castle Garden

- I have just been in England on the most amazing tour. First to The Chelsea Flower Show and then to great gardens in Kent and Sussex.
In this video I'm talking about my visit at Sissinghurst Castle Garden in the Weald of Kent. This is one of the greatest gardens I know, and I have followed the garden the last 25 years.
This amazing place is designed by Vita Sackville-West (1892-1962), poet and writer, and her husband Harold Nicolson (1886-1968), author and diplomat. It is among the most famous gardens in the world and is designated Grade I on Historic England's register of historic parks and gardens.
I was so lucky to see roses, irises, foxgloves and paeonies in flower at the same time. I was just amazing, and I think and hope, that you will enjoy.
My name is Claus Dalby, and I live in Risskov on the outskirts of Aarhus in Denmark. To date, I have written about 30 books on flowers and gardens in Danish, and my garden has been featured on many TV shows. In March 2022 my first book in English will be available. I consider my home (built in1908), and its garden with its neighboring wood, as my sanctuary. When I started gardening in 1996, there was just a large lawn covering approximately 1 acre (4,000 square meters), but today the grass is long gone - replaced by 15 hedged rooms with varying colors and moods. Additionally, one of my great passions is growing in pots, arranged to create spectacular container gardens, which I will share quite a bit about on this channel. Decor and creating moods have always interested me - both outside and inside - and I love to use the flowers from my garden for bouquets and to inspire other crafts that create a sense of hygge.

Thank you Claus for the Sissinghurst tour. So nice to see how they combine different plants.
My pleasure!
Here in England we are always complaining about the weather, but it is what gives us such beautiful gardens!
And you have some of the best gardens in the world, surely.
I live about 10 minutes away from Sissinghurst and love it there! So much inspiration. And I have always felt that your gardening style is similar- very abundant planting and lots of rooms 🥰
It has definitely been an early spring for us here. Looking back at my photos of my garden from previous years, I’d say about 2 weeks ahead.
Love your content! 🤩
Claus another beautiful garden in England in Sussex is Great Dixter Christopher Lloyd’s. It is my favourite and the house is gorgeous as well.
Just wait. I soon have a film ready from GD
Thank you for the lovely tour of Sissinghurst gardens the inspiration must be endless.
Claus, what a treat to see Sissinghurst gardens! I'm happy to see any other lovely places you would like to show us, especially your own wonderful garden! Mange tak!
Thank you for showing Sissinghurst Garden. Really loved looking at her garden.
It is an amazing garden, is it not.
How delightful to see Sissinghurst from your perspective Claus; it’s really interesting to me how different people focus on different aspects & anyway I love hearing your commentary on just about anything! 😍 Your voice has the most mellifluous tone & even if I wasn’t interested in gardening I’d enjoy hearing you 😊 It’s also lovely to see your comparison of the flowering times between the two countries & always to see how your garden looks today. I would love to know what you bought from the Chelsea Flower Show & any ideas you brought back with you too. It almost blows my mind when I see the show gardens on TV & I have Adam Frost’s book, which details how he designed & built each of his Gold Medal 🥇 gardens there. The level of detail that goes into them is incredible - sadly I don’t have anything like enough patience to do something like that, although I’d love to design one myself & then turn up after someone else has finished building it!! 😂 Thankyou as always for another lovely film 👏🏻
Thank you so, so much for your very kind comment - and for being here.
Thank you for taking us along to the castle garden and I am looking forward to the white garden.
My pleasure! Thank you for joining me and welcome back to watch the white garden.
Simply an amazing place. I wish I had time to visit when I went to London for a week. RHS Chelsea was a magical time Claus. Thanks for sharing such an inspiring video. Take care!💚🌿

Love your videos absolutely beautiful home and gardens. I follow Linda Vater religously and hope you do more on you tube and plan to get your book on containers.
I definitely plan to be more active here on RUclips again! If you do buy my book, I hope you will enjoy it and find much inspiration in it.
Thank you so much for sharing your visit to Sissinghurst. Love that garden and have been blessed to see it twice. You know... you could have shown your own garden AFTER the Sissinghurst footage and it would be no less beautiful. :-) Your garden plant choices are such a treat for the eyes.
That is such a huge compliment, thank you so, so much.
Lovely visit. Thank you for sharing. 🌸
Love your garden enthusiasm & your interesting garden design. Your house & green house beautiful too!

I cannot recommend a visit strongly enough.
Gorgeous video! Thank you
Thank you for the tour. I am enjoying your new book on container gardening.
I am so pleased to hear that you like my book - thank you for buying it.
Thank you Claus for your inspirational videos, we did so much enjoy our virtual travel with you to Sissinghurst, and to your own wonderful garden. It is lovely to see spring and summer flowers in your part of the world whilst we, in New Zealand, move closer to winter!
My pleasure! Thank you so much for being here.
Thank you for the tour. I'm inspired by Vita's and your gardens. Very inspiring!
I am so pleased to hear that - thank you.
Truly wonderful....
Lovely video Claus
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you Troy
Thank you for beautiful European garden tours. Hoping to visit soon from Pennsylvania, USA. (My peonies were an early, short display this year due to 90°, no rain days.)
My pleasure! Thank you for joining me on my tours.
Linda, you should search RUclips for videos to save peony buds in the refrigerator for up to 3 months for later use, so you can enjoy your peonies for longer. 😉
Thank-you for sharing!💕🌸🌿
My pleasure! Thank you for being here.
Your garden is looking amazing Claus!
I’m in the North East UK and roses here aren’t yet in bloom, usually mid to late June for my garden 🌹 & Sissinghurst is just beautiful!
Sissinghurst is such a beautiful place and I love coming back.
Can you show the forest next to you in spring and summer time 2024. Interesting to see in your videos please. Thank you ❤❤❤❤
Thank you very much for your request. I only make videos from my own garden, though.
1:41 I would agree with that statement, though I think it only applies to the south. Up north our roses I'd say are at about the same stage as yours.
Thanks for sharing these beautiful gardens!🌱
Thank you for being here.
Love seeing the garden fill in! Such pretty colors!
Thank you so much.
Loved to hear about your trip to England. I live in the Midlands of the country and the gardens are not so far ahead as in the south. My roses are only just starting to bloom and the peonies are at the same stage as yours.
Gret to hear from you
Thank you for the lovely video, Claus. Looking forward to seeing more of the castle gardens, but mostly a tour of *your* woodland garden. That urn atop the moss covered pedestal is beautiful! I can't wait to see more.💚
Thank you so much for your kind interest, I will keep your wish for a woodland tour in mind.
@@ClausDalbyEnglish 🥰👍
me waiting as well . patrick in liverpool
The way you say peonies that’s how I pronounce it ,I have heard people saying it different way . 😊
Absolutely love your videos.
So beautiful and well done.
Thank you!
Thank you very much!
Thank you Mr. Dalby, excellent!🌸💚🙃
Thank yo so much, you are very kind.
Love the lupins, they remind me of my childhood but slugs and snails eat them every time I try to grow them.
The PEONY! :)
Thank you so much for doing this video, Claus! Your garden is beautiful and so are the Sissinghurst gardens. I saw plants at Sissinghurst, like Dictamnus (Gas Plant) and Lunaria (Money Plant), that I used to grow but no longer have. It makes me want to go and buy some seeds or some plants and start them again! 😄
Glad you enjoyed it!
Your videos are a revelation and you are a legendary gardener.
You are so kind - thank you very much.
Thank you for sharing Claus love your garden, I love this time of the year when the borders are starting to peak - Greetings from Ireland!
My pleasure - I am glad you like it.
This video really put a smile on my face, thank you for sharing your travels with us!
My pleasure! Thank you for joining me on my travels.
It's a really nice garden. I enjoyed watching it.
I am happy to hear it - thank you.
Thank you sharing that tour. I live on the desert Southwest of the US and really love the lush beauty of green, wild gardens..
My pleasure! Thank you for joining me.
Beautiful; both gardens. Thank you Claus. Hmmmm. That "I'll be back." with that wonderful German accent makes me a little nervous. lol
German? I'm Danish!
@@ClausDalbyEnglish Well just shows you that I'm an ignorant America. No doubt you speak several languages. I barely speak one. Thank you for correcting me, sir.
Dear Claus, many thanks for showing us what will grow where there is sufficient rain. I have been enjoying your videos for some time and have been reading your first book in English on arranging potted plants. Here in the Sonoran Desert things look very different but many of your ideas about color and plant mixing as well as the wonderful look of potted plants by your entry ways have been inspirational.
Thank you so much for buying my book - I am really pleased that you can find inspiration in it, even though you are in a quite different part of the world.
Just beautiful 😍
Thank you, Sir for your video!
🌹🌹🌹
Thank you too!
My peonies are ready to flower too! ❤ sending you love from Canada 🇨🇦 Linda in Vancouver
Thank you so much, Linda - you always write such nice comments.
Absolutely stunning Claus 🌸💕🌸
You are very kind - thank you.
Always love seeing your lovely garden! 😍
Thanks so much 😊
Thank you so much for today’s wonderful video. I’m learning so much from watching your channel. I have a shade garden, and will be happy when you cannot see the soil and weeds. I’m almost there!
My pleasure! I am so happy to hear that you like what I do here.
Love seeing both gardens. My peonies are almost finished and roses are starting. Zone 5 central Indiana USA. Cannot wait to see more. Love lilies but so do the rabbits 😩
You are quite a bit ahead of us then. So pleased that you are keen to see more.
Lots of Love Claus from Tanzania😍
Thank you so much.
Good afternoon! Thank you for the video! Tell me how do you arrange watering of the site?
My pleasure! In my own garden we simply use an oscillating sprinkler and for the containers we use a water wand.
Thank you again for sharing your beautiful garden and for the look at Sissinghurst Castle gardens. Both are so beautiful! I'm wondering if you can tell me what the blue flower with black stems are, at 6:32 in your video? Thank you!
Thank you so much for your kind comment and joining me on both my walks!
I thought Sissinghurst and your own garden have similarities, both are beautiful
You are very kind ...
I thought so too.
Hola hola
Hello, thank you for sharing you’re beautiful gardens. Can you add plant names for this tour and others? Looking for the tiny purple flowers name at 6:29.
Also the burgundy one at 7:09, and pink one at 7:58?
Thank you so much for your kind comment. I try to add plant names as often as I can, but I am afraid my time does not allow me to help you here.
-is it lychnis or silene diocia in pink?
-did you grow the ravenswing in trays or did they all come up on their own?
'Ravenswing' is self seeding in the garden
@@ClausDalbyEnglish thanks
Is anyone able to identify the rose at 5:30?
Can not hear the audio
You are the first one to say this - are you sure that you have your volume turned up?
🌻👨🌾🌸🐝 🤩 wow your garden is impressive! Inspiring! Your passion and hard work shows. As a gardener & RUclips creator myself I am extremely thankful that you share tips and guidances. I hope we can learn from each other as we grow!
Thank you so much for your kind comment and for being here. This is all about learning from and inspiring each other.
Stunning!
