This brings back memories. I bought my '82 5.8 new. Named it 'Lil Deuce Sloop, a play on the Beach Boys song. Sailed out of Long Beach,CA. Sailed 'Hurricane Alley' during Santa Ana Winds. Dana Point other times. Never had a sailboat beat me until another 5.8 with a spinnaker came around. I had some Supercat 20s come really close though. I learned to sail at OCC's Sailing Center in Newport Beach in the '70s. My favorite boats there were the Shields.

Yes. A true 5.8 has no boom. It’s a deck sweeper sail.
