Probably the most underrated American song writer of all time...totally underappreciated....although he's inducted into the rock and roll hall with the Byrds,...he should actually be inducted into the song writers hall of fame as well...a true American genius.
Uncomfortably correct observation. And the two Byrds who tried their damndest to quash his brilliant talent were fully paid back in a sustained and well-deserved stroke of karma: future careers in the business that creatively, never rose above the level of mediocrity.
There are many positives in the Gene Clark story. I treasure 20 of his songs and play them regularly. I am doing my part to have him inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Life is tragic for us all but Gene was thrust into Hollywood with an immature band, immediate wealth, fame and popularity. From an obscure country background with limited technical musical experience, he was quickly discouraged by others with technical musical knowledge and who wanted to usurp his dominant position as a founding Byrd member. Yes he had personal doubts and the music industry was full of pitfalls and unscrupulous people. As his mate Slokum said, he needed a wingman. I noted that he turned to Christianity for some relief, but the drugs and alcohol had taken a deadly toll. He kept returning to the Byrds where his success was achieved. There was no solace there. Carla Olson gave him several years of respectability and pride in his outstanding abilities before he plunged into an ever darkening void.
I dedicate this in VERY loving memory of my wife. Barb -- we had only 2 years together before cancer stole you away. During that short time, we lived a lifetime of love and joy. I have no regrets. I'll be with you soon enough (and Forever). I know you'll be waiting for me in Glory. Your Eternally-loving Husband (W)
Gene certainly left his mark in a short life and I never tire listening to at least twelve beautiful compositions. In these alone, he surpassed the compositions of Crosby and McGuin. As a man of character and honour, he surpassed all other Byrds. His disadvantaged home life, education and legitimate issues exacerbated his lifestyle choices. He shall be admitted into the Song Writers' Hall of Fame and his songs will be heard forever.
I had the good fortune to meet Gene Clark when he toured with his version of the Byrds in the 80's. He was a real gentleman and we spoke for the duration of two cigarettes (my 80's vice). He is still the best singer I have ever seen on stage. His voice is unmatched and when he sings, the universe stops to listen.
Sometimes life really isn't fair, and Gene Clark is evidence of that. His life seems like a story of unrealized potential. Blame his anxiety (which maybe could've been better handled with today's medicine), his drug problems, his relationship with the other Byrds, whatever. This guy was so talented and every bit as deserving of the fame that McGuinn and Crosby still have today, but it never happened for him. It's so unfair. He died so young, only 46. But truth be told I think he was an old man by that age, and he was ready to go.
Tragedy or not, Gene certainly left his mark in a short life and I never tire listening to at least twelve beautiful compositions. In these alone I believe he surpassed Crosby and McGuin. He shall be admitted into the Song Writers' Hall of Fame and his songs will be heard forever.
I am a huge fan.a I saw them at the Veteran Coliseum in a small Phoenix club too. Managed to talk to them all. Huge fan. Me But this song does nothing. Ditch it.
I saw him on the Mcguin, Hillman ,Clarke tour in the mid 70s. I was just a teen . Great gig. Only now fifty years later do I realise who we lost. I'm crying.
Like a hymn. The orginal was incredible and this is somehow even better. The guy understood art and humanity so much better than most. When you're his original you're peerless. Poetry ignited.
For all of his lack of musical knowledge and lack of education, his lyrics always blew me away, and the way he wove those lyrics through his melodies was supernatural. And his voice was magic.Only one Gene Clark. He was pure genius.
Some artists’ stories are so sad that their lives becomes legendary in itself. Their songs get covered, future generations learn about them, maybe even movies get made about them. Gene Clark’s story might be the saddest of all, not because he is remembered by so many because he has been completely forgotten
First time I have ever heard this. Makes me think of all the women in my life, ex-wives n girlfriends. Beautiful. I'm 67 , there is still time for more.
To hell with The Beatles' Now and Then. This is the stuff, She Don't Care About Time, that can produce, with justification, real tears and real feelings.
I am old enough to recall when the Byrds were touted as the American answer not only to the Beatles, but the British invasion of the ‘60’s. Gene Clark has mistakenly been kept out of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
@@jorgeespinosa3179 How was he kept out? Gene Clark was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with the other original Byrds members in 1991. That was the last time the original lineup ever played together; Clark died only 4 months later.
Some of the best songs of the 60s and beyond were Gene Clark written songs. The song Full Circle on his Roadmaster album and also The Byrd's Reunion album from 1973 was a stand out! I miss his contributions.
Just wanted to say thank you to Phillip Leighton-Daly and others for their contributions, really increased my understanding. When I bought the Byrds first album back in the 60's I noticed Gene Clark's songwriting contribution, but these comments bring a more complete picture.
Certainly I agree with you. Much of that feeling comes out in the Byrd Who Flew Alone. His large family upbringing, modelling and the jealousies and control generated in the Byrds are curious. Crosby's domination and ambitious drive to flaunt his academic attainments were a factor. The success of the Byrds resulted in returning again and again to them. He became defined by them.
I tried finding a copy of "the byrd who flew alone" I found foursunsproductions email but unfortunately they were no copies available. Hopefully someday I can find a copy as I do search occassionally. I have no explanation as to why Gene Clark is so unknown I find it depressing that a talented soul such as Gene is not considered a national treasure!
It must have been taken down I listened to this version a few months ago maybe a bit longer,i know I put it up on my facebook a few years back from a link on you tube. it had the picture (cover) of the rerelease with the mountain stage performance from 2008.
In understanding Gene Clark, his large family, and lack of education were major contributors. Then the appalling influence, as explained by one Byrd, of how David Crosby asserted his dominance over the group. He wanted control and criticised those who stood in his way. He criticised Gene's guitar and tambourine playing. By his own admission, he criticised Gene's musical knowledge and lack of education. And he believed Roger was a better singer. And even though Gene was by far the superior song writer, Mr Crosby and others were jockeying to add their songs to the royalty list. Gene biggest problem was that he became defined by the Byrds. His loyalty prevented him from noting how harmful their petty quarrelling and Mr Crosby's controlling ways were..
Just curious if anyone knows whether or not Gene's sons were able to retrieve Gene's guitars, awards, and unfinished music after Terri Messina stole them after his death.

Beautifully written.
Agree, beautifully written!!
Hope you succeed getting Gene into Songwriters Hall of Fame. He so deserves it

A heartbreaker, I want to hear it over and over again. GENE is a part of my life, his voice makes me feel so much better every day. ❤️

Agreed.
No need to disparage other members of the Byrds. Gene Clark shines with his own light.
Wow. This is incredible. I saw Gene Clark perform 3 times and this is what it was like. He plants the song in your soul.
Great country/folk music. No one better then Gene Clark.
I hope he will always be remembered
This is a wonderful version of his brilliant song.
There is not s more perfect voice than Gene's in this universe.

Unappreciated Genius
No Other. Gene was so much the proverbial “black sheep” of the Byrds and never got the deserved credit for his greatness.
Gene Clark such a voice and talent
One of the greatest songs ever written-should have been on the Byrds 2nd Album!
Beautiful acoustic version of She Don't Care About Time.
Ross Thomas: I am crying with you. I rralizrd over 60 yrars ago what a treasure Gene was.
pure magic what a great version what a great voice love pure
This song gives me chills whenever I hear it what a terrible waste open incredible person and songwriter
Gene Clark made some amazing albums - go check them out!

Gram Parsons' biographer called the Byrds a "nest of vipers".
Transcendent.

Molto bella. Mai ascoltata prima.
Gene chose the demons over his 'better angel'!
McGuinn's version of this beautiful song lacks the melancholy and soul that GC puts forth in this live take on his own song. RIP, GC! PEACE...♐
That's because it was done as pop (rock) song, more compatible with what the Byrds were doing.
This song on Turn-Turn-Turn is a duet with Roger and Gene. But is not as good as this acoustic demo by Gene.
Just curious if anyone knows whether or not Gene's sons were able to retrieve Gene's guitars, awards, and unfinished music after Terri Messina stole them after his death.

Gene fella hell fuckin' yeah
I can't find this live album of these two. Where can I find it? I've tried Amazon Music to no avail...HELP!

Does Carla Olson still record? There's very little, if any at all, 4-1-1 concerning her and her music. ♐
She's been in the studio with the Textones lately...
