  • HOW MUCH POWER DOES A CHEAP, LOW-BUCK, JUNKYARD 454 MAKE? HOW MUCH POWER DOES A CHEAP, LOW-BUCK, JUNKYARD 8.1L MAKE? DOES AN 8.1L MAKE MORE LOW-SPEED TORQUE THAN A 7.4L? CAN THE 454 MAKE AS MUCH POWER AS THE 496? HOW MUCH POWER IS A CAM SWAP WORTH ON A 7.4L? WHICH JUNKYARD BIG BLOCK SHOULD I CHOOSE FOR TOWING? CHECK OUT THIS VEIDEO WHERE I COMPARED THE POWER AND TORQUE OUTPUTS OF TWO JUNKYARD BIG BLOCKS-THE GEN-6 7.4L 454 AND THE GEN-7 8.1L 496. I EVEN MODIFIED THE SMALLER 454 TO EQUAL THE POWER OUTPUT OF THE 8.1L, BUT IT STILL DID NOT MAKE AS MUCH LOW-SPEED TORQUE!

    Just a quick crunch of the stock numbers:
    The 8.1 is 9.25% bigger (more displacement) than the 7.4.
    But it made 68 more horsepower which is 19% more than the 454.

    I think the 8.1 is always going to be hindered by its basic cost in used condition and the lack of a broad number of aftermarket parts. And that's a shame because I think there is real potential in the 8.1 as a performance engine, for off road and limited drag racing.

    I wonder how the 8.1 would do vs. the old school 502 GM built for boats, motorhomes, and hot rodders. Not likely to find one in a CAR junkyard, but maybe at a dealership, boat repair, or RV repair shop.

    Hi Richard, I want to thank you for the education you have provided since back in the Days of Adding heads and a cam to junkyard motors began. What you taught us all is that as long as the heads will support the air flow the displacement requests it will make about the same torque regardless of the Brand stamp. Pontiac, RB Mopar, Ford SMB or SMB Chevy it doesn't matter, basically Wedge motors all act alike. Adding cam timing just moves that Torque curve until the head runs out of flow. The Canted valve Motors are better and I assume the Hemi heads are better yet because they flow more air but only if the RPM and Cam timing support it. Same can be said for Overhead cam motors, they flow more at any given RMP/Displacement therefore make more power. The 7.4 versus 8.1 is a great example, Bigger, As long as flow is equal to the demand at the RPM you run is always better at the same percentage to Size. Lastly you have explained better than anyone else the relationship between Torque and Horsepower in that Horsepower is just a math problem based on Torque and RPM. Build your engine as big as you can to make torque. If you are limited to small displacement by rules then spin it faster and improve flow. Thanks again.

    I have had a 454 of some sort in my life since 1986 up to 1999-2000 and have always been a huge fan of them. I bought a 2001 K2500 8.1 Suburban and was blown away at the low end torque of the 8.1. Raylar engineering makes some great pieces for it but my checkbook says I can't do it ....lol. You had 4 different versions of the 8.1 available from GM. I currently own two different ones.
    The one I drive daily is the 440 hp motor. I ordered it from gm. Advertised at 440. Slip says it made 452hp, 598 lb ft. I didn't want the 510hp version. I felt it was to unstable for towing. I could see the pistons becoming grenades while traveling up a hill with a full trailer on a hot day. The 440hp motor has been great though.
    I have a 380 hp motor that came out of an avalanche. They used the 4L80e or whatever it is instead of the allison. They're ok, and honestly if you're looking for a slick and easy big block replacement for an old big body chevy. This is your go to option imo.

I don't have much direct experience with their newer products and was wondering whether this is just because they're what you have on hand or is there some advantage to them over something like HPTuner and an stock ECM?
    In the past we had problems with aftermarket systems relying on proprietary sensors that tended to be unreliable and sometimes hard to find in a pinch so we modified the oem systems instead. I'm curious what your thoughts are on the current state of things.

    • @ChurchAutoTest
      @ChurchAutoTest 2 года назад +2

      OEM systems are great, but in an engine dyno setting they may have issues with missing sensors, etc. The more modern the ECU, the worse it gets. Additionally, the aftermarket ECUs are real time updating, so no need to shut everything down and spend time flashing the ECU to make changes. They all do basically the same thing, the aftermarket ECUs are just easier to use, have fewer extraneous things to interfere with the tune (emissions checks, traction control, etc.), and more transparent in their operation.

      @willstikken5619 2 года назад +1

      @@ChurchAutoTest Thank you for the response, you made some solid points especially for the dyno environment. Ease of use would definitely be a big boon whenever there is a lot of tuning or modifications but on a typical engine swap once they're in and tuned it should be moot. That's when i worry about things like proprietary sensors and reliability.
      Seems like I'll have to give these another look for my next swap.

    Thank you for your interest in BBC’s. I wish I had one of those 8.1’s, but for now I’m stuck with the gen.VI 454 in my ‘98 one ton. I’d like to see something on an optimized exhaust for both these stock engines, specifically because the exhaust has fallen off of mine and it is time to put something on it. I’ll not be making my own headers, but my understanding is that the real gains are in the proper collector design. I’m probably typical of most dudes into this stuff and capable of removing junky collectors from off the shelf headers and making my own collectors to then weld onto purchased headers.

    Com-On Richard, the 496 has symmetrical port heads compared to the regular small port or peanut heads in the same old BBC Good Port Bad Port situation that is mostly eliminated using symmetrical ports..Now I No a Gen 7 has symmetrical ports, Id look to get engine like that considering it would have a port setup kinda like Big Chief head which IS kinda what Chevy just did with there 1000hp crate engine..How'd they do-it? Using symmetrical ports like a Big Chief is how Chevy did it..I love ur videos Richard😉

      the good port bad port is not an issue at this power level and the 454 heads flow well enough to match the 496 power-its displacement

      You would know better then me & I do believe what you say, just seems as though having a striaght run to the valve under any conditions still has be advantage over making turns w/a good port bad port situation..I used 427s & 454s forever so I do understand the power u can get out of them But compared to Symmetrical Head 496 & I didt know these Gen 7s had symmetrical heads🥳, Now I Do thanks to you & just told my wife abt 496,,I wondered if we could replace 6.0 in her H2 with 500inchs of BBC? 600Hp+ & 650lbs w/a Under 6000rpm, then add Procharger Or Whipple Screw got be over 900Hp & 850lbs in H2 Hummer, sounds pretty Bad Ass But she is pretty bad ass, her other trucks 7.3 lifted Big F350 PU, Anyway I loved the test..Do these 496 run 4.5 bore w/a 4inch stroke Or do they run 1/4inch arm on crank w/a 4.25bore to make 496? I Always prefer Big Bore w/a shorter stroke..I dumped my small bore long stroke engines & have 4.5 bore w/an 1/8inch arm to com-up with 526..I was thinking maybe I cud throw together a symmetrical port 496 & drop my Blower/Hat rite on top, aft put head studs in But not running any real Blower Speed keep boost down, a cheap engine that wud make around 1800-2000Hp, that long block w/my F11 Fowler Extreme & Carbon Hat on top, got make almost 2000Hp considering same top on 14degree Olds maks over 3000Hp..What do you think Richard? I wish wasnt so dumb Or Id find better spot to write you then here,,Thanks for all ur advice, been really helpful to me🎸😉🐾

    im not really surprised to see this but still kinda am.
    the 454 is vortec head based and roller motor. yes theyll never flow for 6-7k rpms but they dont flow bad at those rpm ranges either. they stall. but still flow alright. but where they shine is low end torque. with a good torque cam and a little more compression i think it could come close but i think it really is outclassed by the 496. 500 ft lbs of torque is alot. and the last 454's didnt make shit for power they were dogs. i drive one sometimes and i tell my boss all the time let me hook my truck up it will snatch the trailer out from under that load. mine is only a small block 350 but its vortec based aswell and has a good torque cam from lunati and a low power factory tune and makes over 400 ft lbs of torque. with shortys and an h pipe vs these long tubes and true duals it should be closer to 450 ft lbs. the new trans will be in this spring and the shortys go in with it. maybe i can finally get it tuned and not worry about breaking this trans too. maybe i can break 500 ft lbs after that. this build i did was supposed to be mild and toned back from the 350sbc hot block i got to do the swap in the first place. im not complaining but theres is alot to be had with these last gen vortec small blocks and they just got forgotten about for the new ls motors. ive used both and pulled trailers with both and the ls series doesnt impress me even though the numbers are bigger.

      Not really. The top end of the newer motor is simply better. Better heads, coil on plug, better intake... it's more than just an increase in displacement.
      It's like comparing the older 350 sbc to the ls* engines- the newer ones are simply better. The old ones can be modified, but then so can the newer ones, and to more benefit using stock heads/rotating parts.
