I for one really appreciate these types of videos, learned something again today. What I learned was a painfully obvious way, yet one I had never thought about, to check piston to valve clearance. I've been doing stuff like squash and measure clay, and different diameters of flux core solder. What a pain compared to what I just watched. So again, you might get tired of these tech videos, but some of us find gold in them! 😊

Can we all just take a moment and acknowledge how "regular ass gearheads" Chief and Jackie really are? Two kindred spirits just going after those W's and the inherent respect associated. Handmade tools, shade tree wisdom, determination, and setbacks like most of us have to work with. Just driving down to the machine shop to pick up their engine themselves... I love this stuff! Makes me want to go out back and turn down a piece of aluminum on the lathe. For no particular reason. LOL Keep it up guys!
Back in the day we used to stack steel shim head gaskets to get the minimum valve to piston clearance. We had a minimum of forty thousands and you better not miss a shift or overheat that little puppy 😂. Great video Chief and Jackie.

You know it's getting serious when actual oil pan gaskets are installed.. Although the cam got advanced, the problem never got solved. Now knowing the cam specs and assessing the damage, with seeing the actual movement of the valve gear, I'd say there's too much of a lobe lift in your cam. Although it should be able to rev up to 8600 with no issues, the angles on the setup are still too much on the radical side, and high lobe tends to "flick" the rest the valve train causing it to separate and travel further and for longer duration than the actual profile. This "flickery" bends pushrods, cracks rockers and springs, mates valves with pistons and all the other race car stuff. Re-grinding the cam for less lift would remedy most of this.Also this level of tune can easily be killed in the very first start up. Finnegan did that to his drag boat big block. That engine coughed once and destroyed half of the valve train. To avoid that, you need separate start up timing table with fully retarded spark, or a start up sequence as follows: Spin, fuel, spark. If you add fuel and spark before spin, the advance blows up in your intake due to the extreme valve opening time. If you add fuel before spin, you flood the engine and wet the plugs, with the chance of hydro lock. Also, if you cut the ignition in the middle of a power band, parts will fly.
Correction: Too much rocker ratio, not lobe lift. Coughed? The engine didn't cough. The rod bearings ceased to exist. That happens and its doesn't matter what rocker ratio or lobe lift or clearances you have. In fact, when that happens, you have ALL the clearance. That is what eats parts.
@@jrdmotorsports9718 Rocker ratio in this case doesn't help with the angles on the valve train, nor the "flicking" of the lobe. Also shaving off .1 or .08 from the overall lift AND creating more duration @ max flow area is done by shaping the lobe, rather than rocker ratio. I initially thought too, that changing the rockers would help, but after giving it a second thought, shaping the lobes is a better idea in this particular case. At his first try to start his brand new (used, but just rebuilt, the black one in California, not Game Over or his wife's boat) drag boat, Finnegan hit the fuel, ignition and then start. It coughed a fireball, but didn't start. After getting some advice from the veterans, he got the engine fired up with fuel, spin, spark sequence, but the boat never ran good throughout the weekend. When they finally started to tear it a part, they found at least four broken springs and a few bad rockers, bent valves.. basically a busted valve train.And that happened when the engine coughed that fireball @ the very first try to start it.

It's amazing how many people don't understand what a "speed handle" (that crooked thing he's playing with at the end) is or the right way to use it. Great for installing head bolts, etc. and you literally give it a spin after getting the bolts started to speed your way through the installation. 😀

you figured it out lol im scared to race! I went to a couple races last year and when i won everyone said i was picking on slower cars, but when i lost everyone said i couldnt keep up with the slower cars lol....Ive raced when and where someone else told me to for the last 10+ years and now im going to race when and where i want to. Im sorry if thats not enough for you guys, but thats why this channel is called Midwest Street Cars and not "Big Chief Racing"....Its about everything that goes on around our shop, and right now we are trying to get these small tire cars going, so we can race in some fun stuff more often. We took last year off pretty much and was trying to return to a semi normal lifestyle, and now we are finishing up projects that we have been putting off for years. When the weather gets better, and something comes along that looks fun and my car fits the spirit of the rules, than ill be there.
Glad to see that you're using the cometic headgaskets. I had recommended that on one of your videos. Ran a four hundred and thirty four inch small block chevy with a blower and used to melt the heads between between the siamese valves.

There's random number picker sites, you'd put the order number that started the give away and the ending order number before the give away ended, like say order number "2343" to order number "3678" and it will randomly pick a order number in between those and it can be done live.... So during that time , when I was under my 4x4 putting in u joints and you know how your neck muscles are stretched and if you lift your head anymore that your going to have a spasum? Well guess what ? I made a pillow on casters that slides under you neck and talk about a lifesaver , but everytime I used the Fucking thing people would ask me where I bought the damn thing , and I would always say it was a special order from England and they would leave me alone ! What I'm asking is do you want to put this , I call it , Heads are gonna Roll on the market with me , you can splatter your mugs all over this and every bonehead mechanic around the world will buy it ! My boss told me that I better stop using that thing and put it away and I did that 25 years ago ! I'm not sending pictures now , but I want see if your interested! Jackie cleetus McFarland did a deal with Steve Morrison the engine builder and they use the subs that Cletus has and he got him an engine maybe you guys could do the same for you it's something like if you get Steve the certain amount of Subs new subscribers you get the motor. You never know you should give it a try he has that Billet aluminum motor that can make up to 5,000 horsepower if you put 4 turbos on it and it's a street Drivable engine cleetus just start doing sevens in his El Camino.. and I know that your nitrous lady I know Steve could set something up with you who wouldn't want Big Chief and Jackie to have one of their Motors.. everyone go racing get some fun going

Ok, off topic kinda. I watched on one video where you said that Jackie worked her butt off on the Crow as a part of the crew (if I'm wrong let me know), so my question is where did she get so smart, mechanically? She's right there with you or maybe ahead of you when you're talking about engine stuff and why you think this or that about what is going on.
That wildly worn out thrust bearing has had me thinking forever. It couldn't be the driveshaft smashing forward because the trans would have failed first. But when the thing is on the brake for extended time, the converter pressure is trying to push the converter out of the pump. Was the converter pressure super high? And that cam timing number... The Belt drive indicator showed 4 degrees retarded. I'm wondering if the cam was ever actually degreed in, or if they were going off the bro science that most are ground with 4 degrees of advance and they were shooting for straight up?

you figured it out lol im scared to race! I went to a couple races last year and when i won everyone said i was picking on slower cars, but when i lost everyone said i couldnt keep up with the slower cars lol....Ive raced when and where someone else told me to for the last 10+ years and now im going to race when and where i want to. Im sorry if thats not enough for you guys, but thats why this channel is called Midwest Street Cars and not "Big Chief Racing"....Its about everything that goes on around our shop, and right now we are trying to get these small tire cars going, so we can race in some fun stuff more often. We took last year off pretty much and was trying to return to a semi normal lifestyle, and now we are finishing up projects that we have been putting off for years. When the weather gets better, and something comes along that looks fun and my car fits the spirit of the rules, than ill be there.

Glad to see that you're using the cometic headgaskets. I had recommended that on one of your videos. Ran a four hundred and thirty four inch small block chevy with a blower and used to melt the heads between between the siamese valves.

There's random number picker sites, you'd put the order number that started the give away and the ending order number before the give away ended, like say order number "2343" to order number "3678" and it will randomly pick a order number in between those and it can be done live.... SUPER easy. Honestly it's the same way billy's mom does the old man garages give aways.

We worked on Ferraris and Fiats at a dealership and as we got older we stayed with that line of work and Loved every type of racing and worked on some of the badest Fucking cars ever build and you know how it goes , you work on them , you drive them ! And I'm here to tell ya , with a woody so hard , you could put on the blinkers ! So during that time , when I was under my 4x4 putting in u joints and you know how your neck muscles are stretched and if you lift your head anymore that your going to have a spasum? Well guess what ? I made a pillow on casters that slides under you neck and talk about a lifesaver , but everytime I used the Fucking thing people would ask me where I bought the damn thing , and I would always say it was a special order from England and they would leave me alone ! What I'm asking is do you want to put this , I call it , Heads are gonna Roll on the market with me , you can splatter your mugs all over this and every bonehead mechanic around the world will buy it ! My boss told me that I better stop using that thing and put it away and I did that 25 years ago ! I'm not sending pictures now , but I want see if your interested! Jackie cleetus McFarland did a deal with Steve Morrison the engine builder and they use the subs that Cletus has and he got him an engine maybe you guys could do the same for you it's something like if you get Steve the certain amount of Subs new subscribers you get the motor. You never know you should give it a try he has that Billet aluminum motor that can make up to 5,000 horsepower if you put 4 turbos on it and it's a street Drivable engine cleetus just start doing sevens in his El Camino.. and I know that your nitrous lady I know Steve could set something up with you who wouldn't want Big Chief and Jackie to have one of their Motors.. everyone go racing get some fun going

Ok, off topic kinda. I watched on one video where you said that Jackie worked her butt off on the Crow as a part of the crew (if I'm wrong let me know), so my question is where did she get so smart, mechanically? She's right there with you or maybe ahead of you when you're talking about engine stuff and why you think this or that about what is going on.

That wildly worn out thrust bearing has had me thinking forever. It couldn't be the driveshaft smashing forward because the trans would have failed first. But when the thing is on the brake for extended time, the converter pressure is trying to push the converter out of the pump. Was the converter pressure super high? And that cam timing number... The Belt drive indicator showed 4 degrees retarded. I'm wondering if the cam was ever actually degreed in, or if they were going off the bro science that most are ground with 4 degrees of advance and they were shooting for straight up?
