Watch out Makita, there is a new 16-5/16" Skilsaw Super Sawsquatch on the market that just might give you some competition in the timber framing market. Today we are introducing the newest professional giant saw that Skil has put out this year and it is built to impress. To be up front this is not a paid endorsement nor is this channel supported by Skilsaw. I just got this saw and wish I had picked one up to do this timber frame a long time ago. This has to be one of the nicest and smoothest saws that I have ever run. It is a worm gear saw so it has a lot of power to turn the very large 16-5/16' saw blade. It also features a nice sawdust port to keep the sawdust off of your line and it works very well. The body and table of the saw are made of magnesium with a powder coat finish. I can on and on about the features of this saw but I'll let the video speak for itself. Hope you enjoy.

Thanks for posting this. A lot of us, me anyway, wouldn't know about some of these great tools if someone didn't introduce them. I found this review thorough and unbiased.
Thank you Mark.
Very good review! First time I've heard anyone mention the problem of setting down a saw on the guard and kudos to Skilsaw for coming up with an excellent solution. I have always made a simple wooden stand out of plywood with a cutout for the blade guard because I hate putting my saws down leaning on the guard, especially my cordless ones with the plastic guards. On my most recent plunge-cut purchase, I put the foam moulded bottom packaging in a plastic bin and use it as a stand and for storage.
Good idea on making your own.
Jim! You opened with exactly the shots I was gonna suggest! Great job!!!!!
Thanks for showing that. I have been researching big saws and all I found was the Makita. I will definitely give this a look.
The worm drive makes all the difference.
I am watching that last shot listening something about saws... but, look at the view behind, and you made it all with your bare hands, That, my friend, is awesome.
Thank you
You come across as authentic & trust worthy (would make a good friend or neighbor). So, 15 amps is 15 amps, but when a mam walks the mile & is willing to share the running of a gauntlet his words are wise. It'll be as wiser to listen. Thanks.
Very nice addition Jim. I've got bigfoot, but now I'm left wanting lol. I built a log home 3 years ago
Nice. That saw is a real time saver here.
Appreciate the video, I'm looking to get into timber framing and your videos help! 👍🏻
Really good review. Fair and balanced. Pleasant to watch. Will be looking at one of these sometime soon.
A nice and necessary addition to the tool family. Essential for timber frame building.
You got it
TheTradesmanChannel I wish I had got it..I've seen these in action on frame building sites..let me know how you get on with your new baby as next spring I'm gearing up for new tools for a double garage that I'm designing at the moment..gable ends and centre dividing wall will be in lime stone and the rest in timber. I only have a 7" skilsaw and a 9" dewalt.
Great overview! That is a “Monster” :) Love the channel and trolls will be trolls. Keep plugging away Jim! We are all benefiting from your generosity. Greetings from ND.
Thank you George, even with the trolls this is a lot of fun.
Good morning Jim ,you may not be a sales man for Skil but you have sold two saws i know of here in Ireland two boat builders watched copies of this video i sent them and were so impressed that they purchased two Big Berthas .
looks like a fantastic bit of kit ,another great video THANKS ,keep safe E & P.
Thank you, I think they will like them very much.
Good Review Jim, My that a BEAST of a Saw. You’re right about Skilsaw Pro line power tools, I think they were one of the 1st worm drive Circular Saws to come on the job site. That dual-field motor makes a lot of difference in performance. Keep the extensions cords short as possible and 12ga or if you can find a 10gauge even better. I have a few Makita power tools that I’ve used for years and they never let me down. I’m sure Brother Bob has a old Skilsaw laying around his Shop. Being up there in age, I mostly purchase Craftsman Proline of tools over the years but that Brand has lost it luster.
Enjoyed your last Friday Night live chat with you Son. Bob almost made it in. He was about 5 mins to late to participate. Take care & God Bless from Texas. Still sober Mike
Thanks Mike, you and Bob are good people, wish we all lived a little closer.
TheTradesmanChannel TY Jim, kind of you to say. I'm glad you're Family stayed close to the Homestead. We have two adult daughters both married, One lives in NW Florida and the other with our only Granddaughter lives in Washington State so we all disjointed but Skype and Internet keeps us close. You know there all good folks all across America. That's what makes America Great. Take Care. Mike
Hi Jim. Thanks for the review. I need to buy a beam saw yet. Let us know after a bit if you still feel this good about it. It was good to see blue sky and green grass at the beginning. You look about the same as we do here. Trees starting to get leaves.
They're just starting to come in.
Awesome saw. I have a worm saw. I used it exclusively for clotting the tails off of the rafters. Instead of cutting from the ground, I would walk the beam , eyeball the line and just let the weight plum straight down the mark .
Worm saws are great
Just bought mine this week. I've been dreaming about this saw for years. I need to make some long scarf joints on some 8x8 rafters. Still won't reach ALL the way but that's what Japanese saws are for.
How is the Blacksmith shop going? Happy New Year Jim. I'm still working on our cabin year 8 of a 5 year plan. I did buy a Woodland Mills sawmill last year and acquired a nice 40 year old Massey Ferguson tractor. Keep the faith and don't stop learning.
It's actually been very busy to the point where I'm not sharing a tin because of the order volume. I'll take it all day long.
Greetings from England Him great demo been at the game lAst 40 years never seen skil saw this big need to get one keep up the good work
Thanks Frank.
Awesome saw. I have the 7 1/4 and 10 inch mag and they are bullet proof. I have a Raycore.com SIP build coming soon and I am going to buy one to trim the panels. Thanks for the demo.
It's a great saw, very happy with it.
after more than 50 years of all kinds of saws, I still want stuff like this...all new and shiny.... but unless you use it often it makes little sense for me. Couple of things... how many amps is it? The cord looks very thin, what are your wire sizes? I saw it caught in the cut line...we always on long rips put the cord loose over right shoulder with a skil type saw. And my own personal bugaboo is to use twist lock 20 amp plugs on everything....no disconnects and they last forever. I still have good plugs from when I first started buying tools...
My word !! That's a nice piece of equipment,,,, your going to enjoy that, Jim. Take care.......
You too Thomas.
Thanks for the video
Thanks Jim
Great information on the saw!
Thank you, I don't give many tool reviews so it's a learning curve.
Got this saw and I love it.
Thanks definitely a great help didn't know they made one
Thanks for watching.
Its huuuge!!! That's a nice one. Should help with many projects. The stand is nice, hopefully it stands up to the use.
We'll see what happens with it over time.
Was this a recommendation to get or something that you had been looking into for awhile? Would you put it on the high side of the list of things to aquire prior to a build like this?
I've been wanting a big one for awhile. If you're doing timbers over 8" then I would get one. Save a lot of time.
Holy Toledo!!! That saw is going on my bucket list.
I love it
Any updates you can give ? How is it for drop cutting tenons ?
Not many new updates at the moment, it works well for drop cutting but is a lot to hold onto. Once this busted leg heals up I'll be back to timber framing with more videos.
Looks like a good saw, but is there something that size in a sliding miter saw?
Morning Jim.... what a monster! My back is aching just watching you pick it up! Shame you didn't have that when you started the barn. Still have no power here so I'll catch you when my generator is running. Nice weather coming.
Good luck John, weather is taking a turn here...time to pick up.
Nice saw, one question, where is it made?
Letting your audience know about the features of an expensive piece of equipment is good content. Imagine if you had seen a video about the Big Foot before you bought it? Great video.
That is true and thank you.
Just a helpful hint.
Try a small flashlight to shine the light on the close up shots. I keep one on my hip. You will be surprised at how many times a day I use that thing.
That is a good idea
Fair review. Thank you ,Jim. What is the weight of that bad boy? Will you still do drop cuts with it?
Just over 27#'s, probably no drop cuts until I'm used to the saw.
Great review...I’ve been looking for awhile and I think I’m sold. I like the worm drive and this will be a great saw to have. Thanks for the review and a great video.👍🇺🇸
Used mine to rip four 12ft 6x6s. The thing is a beast. Loves to trip a 15amp ckt lol
I love this saw, probably one of my favorite power tools.
What size is the base plate?
Huge Tom huge!! Lol. That's a beautiful saw! Can't wait to see it cut more! 👍
Never speak of that commercial here again...been listening to that one for 20 years!
Hahaha. I can't stand his commercials! Drive me nuts!
Me too. Come on down and take on a YUUUUUGE PAYMENT!!!
LOL !!! I use a diamond products hydraulic handsaw. Had a 30"x.1/4" blade. Cuts 12" reinforced concrete. Would like to add a water system on this saw for my smaller jobs. Now put a hi-frequincy motor and run on 240/480v that would be unstoppable. Good review.
That saw is crazy. Never knew something like that existed. I think I need one now.
Everyone should own one.
I wonder if this has the same motor as the 7 1/4. One thing I didn't like the smaller one is, it doesn't have the sawdust routing channel. The sawdust was all over my face when I have to cut something reaching lower to the ground.
The motor is just over 15amps. I agree on the sawdust. I do notice that if the timbers are really green the sawdust port will plug up.
Nice info, thanks Jim.
Thanks for watching.
I’m happy for you mate, looks like a winner..!
It is
We had one at north ga for berry college it was badass
Nice saw, Jim. Fricking huge..!! I always offered worm drive to direct drive. Can't go wrong with Skil, either. Did you get your last bent up this weekend?
wow that.is.AWSOME 🔥👍
Big fan of this saw.
Very nice saw...great purchase
Thank you, very happy with it.
Dude that saw is sick I want one. And I don't cut big stuff but that saw is sick it's like a 12-inch double beveled compound miter saw in your hand
That saw is incredible.
Just need to see it in action bro tells us all we need to know, been building for 20 years had absolutely no idea something like that existed, apart from hearing a saw when I'm not at work i loved the video 😁🤙p.s, my dad is going to FLIP when i show him this video
Great
Wow!!!!! That's huge!
Biggest saw I've ever owned
Impressive Beast indeed 💪👍🇺🇸💯
thanks for the review. was gonna buy a makita 16 5/16, now think i've changed my mind, esp on the price of new saws, now just need to find one at a reasonable price that will ship to europe. think worm drive is a much better bet.
Hey Jim! Nice saw! Should be quite helpful!
Hello Donnell.
Hey Jim I was just wondering how long you've been using the saw now, and have you experienced any extensive wear and tear from all the rip cuts, I'm buying the saw next week, and I'm starting a cabin project, I'm going to have to make a ton of rip cuts, so I was just wondering and your opinion will this all hold up, being solely used for rip cuts.
For long rips make a couple of passes, first at half depth and then full. It's been bullet proof so far after almost two years.
That is an amazing saw!
I love this saw, it is an amazing tool.
*picks jaw up off the floor*......Beauty saw Jim!!! 😁🌲
Thanks Jimi
Nice video brother! Great info!
Thank you, hope it helps.
Sweet saw. Now I'm waiting to see you use the thing in a practical application.
You will very soon. The opening cuts were for brace stock.
Tim the Tool Man would be impressed.
He sure would
That is a animal!!!! I like the worm drive. I have a Dewalt that I got free from work it is a regular skill saw but it is heavy and clumsy very hard to get started on a cut. I also have a Makita skill saw much lighter and easier to control. I got to use my buddies worm drive what a difference!!!
Makita 7-1/4" saws are great, I too have a Dewalt that is clumsy. I prefer worm drives too though.
Boy what a difference that saw would have made in my life 40 years ago.
Jim that thing looks like a sawmill, I love the case thats a great idea
That saw is a lifesaver.
Jim,it’s a good thing it’s made of magnesium the way your drooling over it,Any other material it would rust. That is a good looking saw. Or monster as you youngest called it.
There may be some slobber on it.
Wow! the saw is a monster!
It's huge
love your channel...
Thank you
Hi JIM, Also the base of my Makita absolutely sucks there’s a replacement base out there but it’s pricey. I always feel like I have better control and make straighter cuts with my worm drives than my sidewinders . Maybe it’s just me.
Same here.
And to think the old worklights dimmed when you fired up the 7.5" lol nice tool. Hope they comped it to you for showing it off for them! If not you better talk to Wranglestar he can give us all pointers for getting free stuff
Hello Mike...you never know.
I am geodesic Dome builder that is perfect, i am glad you got that brother
Thanks. It works great.
All I can say is nice saw and nice job telling us about it.
Thanks George.
Nice vid Bud, going to end up with big guns throwing that around, the stand is a really good idea too, no risk of changing alignment. I always said i'd come over and kick your butt if you did an unboxing, definitely not necessary, this is a tool that makes what you do more efficient, my personal issue is with youtube shill videos is that every month or so they review another drill which is "the best" and tbh is no different than the other 6 drills they get given to review. You did your research and gave your hard earned $$ for it and that is a big difference
I know what you mean, it tends to get goofy out there.
That's awesome I think I'll look to buy one have a lot of trees around here I like to cut down into Timbers. We have red oak White Oak Black Walnut and Hickory
Nice selection you have there
Hi Jim, what a tool, be great for your timber framed extension
It will be good to have around.
Have you drop cut any tennons yet.
I have and I can tell you you better hold on. It worked out well but the first time you realize how heavy it is.
THAT is a nice saw! And you get what you pay for. The time saved will more than pay for it. I think you may have sold a few for Skil, Jim, great info!
Thanks, hope it was helpful
I don’t care what Kim says about you, your hands didn’t look small until you held that beast.
Makes everything around it tiny...everything!
Skills are there again kaboom
That saw is awesome!!!
That saw is a beast, very nice!
Good morning James
Morning Jim. She's right, that is a monster. How much are the blades for it?
BTW, I've got a new video up. Hope to get a bit more regular with uploads this Summer. Oh, and my concerns were correct in my higher level math courses this semester. Mind you in 4 years I have all A's except for 3 B's. I earned a D in Linear Algebra and an F in Calculus 2. Guess I'll be taking Calc 2 again in the Fall. I got A's in both education courses though. I've never received a grade below a B in my life including 2 Associated degrees. This has been quite humbling.
That is very hard math and it certainly wasn't for lack of trying.
I'm taking it as a life lesson, I now can understand what it is like to struggle with a math subject, or two, and will be able to better understand my students difficulties with subject matter.
Now, that’s a Saw Jim.........Whooooo 🙂
SkillSaw is not what they used to be. They’ve stepped up.
Their pro saws are really good, you just don't see them as much.
Awsome saw. Does it have a blade break. It sounded like it when you let go of the trigger. Or does a worm gear saw just sound that way
It has a brake, takes it a second but that's a lot of blade to stop.
TheTradesmanChannel awsome. Thanks for the info Jim. Have a great evening, the weekend is almost gone
I can’t get skilsaws here in Japan. Been wanting to buy a worm drive for some time. But that’s not the point of this comment. It seemed at the start of the video you were marking your beam using a centerline method, but I’m sure in other vids I’ve seen you use a reference face method. Which is it for you? I thought once you learn one method, you never stray?
For me the timbers will dictate any deviations. This particular timber was twisted so the way I could lay it out was with snap lines.
thanks trsdesman that's what I benn waitin to see how the big skil does on long rips those tool review guys just do a quik crosscut throu 6x land scape ties now Ive seen it rip real wood Im realy thinkin on getting one just have to make sure I can get blades for it ............ your doin great job workin on your barn theresee you next vid.
Thanks Jeff, I appreciate it.
Well, Skill should be sponsoring you for such a good review. @ minimum they should send you a load of free tools. If they do there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Thanks for the videos
Thank you sir. They are a nice saw, I wish I had had it through my barn build, it would have made it much easier and faster. Have a good one.
I think your new name should be "Bladerunner" cause If you can run that beast, you can run anything. nice video, great explanation of the features.
Hello Bob, saw is a beast for sure.
Watch out Makita more like watch out Hud-son sawmill!!!!!!! LOL great overview
Hey James.
Its looks like it will do the job
I love it, very nice saw.
How do you think the Super Sawsquatch would handle milling logs (big but not gigantic)? For someone without a bandsaw mill, would an Alaskan mill be better better or would the SSS do well + be useful for all of the regular tasks that it excels at?
Go with the Alaskan for milling. This saw is meant for big beam work.
Thought it was a two man job haha! No seriously , that is some saw and thanks for showing it.
I can see it cutting down a good amount of time for you. Graham 🇬🇧🇬🇧
I really like it.
Skill motor are really powerful I use a 15 amp 2.5 hp skill circular saw motor to drive 12 inch table saw it cut fast and hold up the power really will I had a 3hp induction motor on the it first and I get do much bagging down but not the 2.5hp skill
That thing is a monster!!
Hey buddy
Have you ever used a maffel beam saw?
I have not. I would assume they are pretty high quality.
Yeah. But stupidly expensive.
Nice like it alot Good evening Mr . Jim
Good evening Mr. Shawn
Nice saw Jim!! Too bad you didn't have that at the start of the project!!
I know, would've saved a lot of time.
Evening Jim, tee shirt, sunshine thought I had the wrong channel. Nice saw. Michael : }
You might have!
I thought he got new lights but it was just the sun.
Now that's a saw!!!
Fantastic saw.
Thank you, it cuts great.
Ever tried Mafell?
I have not, I saw the Mafell prices.
Idd, they’re kinda pricey... more something for huge construction teams, running all day long. Like the framing strategy in Germany, Austria, Poland... you’ve probably already seen that. That Skil Sasquatch looks like a real quality tool you can rely on, wish you a lot of fun with it!
They sure do make excellent tools though. If I had a full time shop I wouldn't hesitate to buy them.
I have a 30 year young Makita 16" saw. It appears to be direct drive but in fact, it is gear driven. They sound like straight cut gears. IMO, It is lacking in power and the shoe won't stay square.
BTW, the older metal handled worm gear Skills had 17 Amp motors. I think that went away in the early 70's.
Ron
Good info Ron.
Enjoy your new toy
Lee I saw your name pop up and I had to do a double take. I have an uncle named Lee Eggleston. Eggleston and Eccleston were once the same family in England. The history is pretty neat.
What a beast!
Saw is awesome.
