Idk if stats showed I clicked a thumbs down or not but wanted to tell you that was an accident. TY for this tutorial! You have cleared up several issues I was having. THANK YOU VERY MUCH 😊❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I’m creating my first graphghan for a wedding present. After two frogs, I realized I was clueless. This was the first video I looked at for education...Thank you for your relaxing approach. I feel much more confident that this will be completed within the next 4 weeks. Your are a great teacher!
I can't tell you how much I enjoy and appreciate your tutorials! You are so informative and easy to follow! Thank you for helping those of us youtube-taught crocheters how to love this craft - even if we can't really read patterns yet!
Haha “don’t even argue with me” that’s funny. You said “I don’t know why I said that”? Well I think I know. To be funny. That’s how I took it. I’m sure you heard this many times but you are a wonderful teacher. I just started crocheting again and found you tube and of course found you. It’s a wonderful thing!!!!
Holy cow. About to embark on my first graphgan, and I must admit I was a little intimidated. I thought I understood it but still was uneasy. Mikey, after watching this tutorial I can't wait to start it. Thank you so much you are a fantastic teacher you're just so natural I love you. Again thank yoy, you are truly an inspiration
😰🥰😄😁 I am crying, laughing, being grateful and I don't know what else! I have been crocheting for a long time, I learned knowing there was one hook, an I, one stitch, a double crochet and one yarn, red heart worsted weight. I have been trying over the last two years to learn new things and am so happy with this crochet. I need a pattern for my daughter's best friend's daughter and I found one that is a grapghan and had no clue. I am can not wait to frog what I started and redo it. This was such a blessing. Mike thank you for all you do and teaching us so many things!!!
I will always remember to pull the non-working yarn forward. 😊 EDIT: thank you so much for this tutorial. It absolutely changed quality of my graphghan.
You have saved me! I am working on a blanket for my grandson - the pattern has quite a few vertical one-block areas and I did not know how I was going to carry that yarn up without the stitches looking crazy. Thank you! I love your videos and appreciate the hard work you put into them!
Thank u so much Mikey I have tried and tried to do these graphs and I wasn't going to let it beat me ..... well after watching tutorials for bloody hours trying to figure it out nothing was sinking in ..... then I came across your tutorial and HELLO the light came on ... u differently have the right touch thank u so much Mikey why the hell I didn't think of u in the first place I don't know guess it might have been frustration tiredness and tears that I wasn't thinking straight
Mikey thank you so much! I was a little apprehensive about graphgans. However I just immediately thought 'Go find a Mikey tutorial'. You are so clear and concise when explaining plus you go the perfect speed. I've actually done a few of these techniques. I crochet over ends in every project but bobbins and carrying up I had no clue about. You're the best teacher. I'm confident now I will make & finish my project in the allotted time! So thanks again! You rock!!! 💛💛💛💛💛
I just started my first ever Graphghan and was looking for tips and tricks to make it neat. Your video explained all of the issues I was having and how to avoid them! Thank you so much for the great tutorial.
I was extremely confused about the use of bobbins. I'm still not sure I 100% understand, but I think I'm starting to! Thank you so much for this video. I'm going to be starting a blanket soon where these techniques will all come in handy!
I just found your tutorials. Usually, the videos that has music only I do not make BUT you are slower than other tutorials. Just love them. Thank you!!!
You are seriously the best crochet teacher! I am starting an afghan for my granddaughter with a graph and had no idea how to start correctly. I appreciate this video so much! Thank you!!!
Wonderful Tutorial! I thought I was ready for a simple two color graphgan pillow, but found out otherwise. Thank you, Thank you for such a well organized and thorough tutorial. You are always my “Go To” for support, inspiration, and to add a little spice to my day 😂❤️
My goal is to show you how its done versus following blindly. I feel if I can teach you to fish, you can eat for a lifetime versus teaching just one pattern and not know how to follow others. I think you learned to fish today and will be able to accomplish many other things in the future.
I am glad you pointed out how to hide the yarn on switching the colours on the way up. I saw someone's work where this hadn't been done and it was the first thing I noticed! The line of yarn jumping up the side of the colour change.
Thank you! The verbal explanation on the bobbins completely lost me - but once you got into actually showing the technique in action, it was crystal clear. Many thanks; the yarn switching was the one thing keeping me away from these types of patterns.
I just started doing graghgans and came across your tutorial doing research. Thank you for this. I think this was very informative and easy to follow. Some things I already was doing, but I found a couple of tips that were extremely helpful. Thanks again
Yeah it's a mindjob to get started on this concept but once you get it, it all clicks. It's really up to you if you want the work involved for it at the point you start to understand how it's done.
Thank you for this video. I've been searching for a week to find a decent tutorial for colour changes. I'm about to start a vintage design afghan for christmas but never worked woth colour changes or a graph in crochet. This has helped so much, I'm excited to get started now.
Thank you very much for this video. I am a first timer on the crochet crowd. You have cleared up so many issues that I have when trying to do letters in a scarf. (to spell a name). Now I see how to carry yarn up and the need for bobbins. After I get a good night sleep I will attempt the scarf tomorrow. LOL...Thank you Mickey and keep these tutorials coming.
Thank you Mikey! I started a graphghan for my first great-granddaughter with her name in it. I was all happy with myself until I got to the second row of color changes and boy was I a mess. After watching your video explaining the color changes I believe I can finish it. I will post it on your Facebook page when I get it finished. This is going to be so cool, for me anyway. Again, THANK YOU!
Thank you so much. Having done Intarsia with knitting for many years and being a relaive newbie to crochet I didn't think about how different it would be. This tutorial is brilliant and I can now get my project back out of the naughty box and start again with confidence. Brilliant relaxed tutorials.
This is great Mickey thank you so much you have explained so well didn't think I would get the bobbin thing but then all of a sudden it clicked thank you have opened a whole new world to me in my crochet I am making a blanket for my first grand child from a request by my daughter I didn't want yo say I couldn't do it because I didn't know how after watching this I have full confidence I can make it ... thank you thank you you are the best
Thank you sooo much. I thought this would be impossible, but luckily you made it very easy to understand. Really inspires me to keep making my blankets with my art on it as a design.
This was such an amazing tutorial. You covered everything I was getting frustrated over and showed how to do it without frustration. Seriously thank you so much. Great job.
It seems very complicated just watching it without actually doing it, but I think once I get a project and then reference this video as I go it will make better sense. Thanks for all your hard work, Mikey.
I wanted to make my first graphghan and had no idea how to do it. I am a visual learner so I’m always looking for videos. I was thrilled to see that you did one showing how to carry the yarn and how to work with bobbins. The one I’m doing doesn’t have a lot of colors and not too many bobbins which is great for my first one! Thank you so much for breaking this down. I admit I had to watch it a couple of times for it to sink on….but I’m on my way! 😂👏🏻
this is the single greatest tutorial i’ve ever seen!!! i’ve been looking up RUclips videos all day for this because I’m starting a more complex crochet project, and this is the first one that actually gave me the answers I wanted!
Hi Mikey Thank you so much for your fully comprehensive video. I simply love your videos . Because of you, I have just completed my first Graphgan - it was The Beatles Help album cover. You are super awesome, thank you 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks. This was very informative. I have never used or heard of the bobbin technique until I bought a graphghan kit. I kinda figured out what they meant by bobbins, but my work would have been a mess. I would not have known how to change the colors properly. I will need to watch several times and practice, practice, practice, but I am confident that I will be able to complete it.
Thank you for this tutorial. I haven’t crocheted in years, but decided I really wanted to make a throw/blanket of Stephenie Meyer’s “Breaking Dawn” book cover. All the steps in this tutorial were perfect, and I just adapted them for my purposes. It came out awesome, and I’m working on a pillow version now 😉
You are my favorite!!! LOVE YOU at 29:47! "Do not even argue with me". Love it. Keep the tutorials coming! You have taught me how to crochet this summer - and I have completed 10 afghans since June 1st. 2 years ago I learned how to quilt via youtube and I made 12 quilts between May-Dec 2015. My family was shocked. This Christmas they are all getting afghans and I am currently working on a Temple University Graphghan for my husband. I will be sure to send you a video of him opening up his present on Christmas. Thanks for all your hard work. We the viewers can tell how much work you put into your videos and we appreciate them! Love you!
Hi Debbora - Its hard to give a list of videos I used to learn because 1) I didn't create a playlist on youtube and 2) I didn't have ANY sewing experience, so I was learning to piece things together at first - how to sew really. First things first - quilting can be an expensive hobby. I had to buy two sewing machines (don't cheap out - buy a good sewing machine initially so you do not have to buy another one after a few months). You will need a sewing machine with a LARGE throat. If the throat is small, you will not be able to fit your quilt through the throat while actually quilting your quilt sandwich (pieced layer, batting, and backing). If you want to send your quilt sandwich off to a long arm quilter, you can do that, but there is a cost involved. I will try to come up with a playlist over the next few days. I will also upload some reveal videos to youtube for you to watch. If needed, I will be happy to give you my number and I can help you with anything while you learn!! First things first - determine your skill level. Have you machine sewed before? If so, grab your 1/4" foot for your machine and install it. That is the ONLY foot you will need until you have completed your quilt top. 2. Do you have fabric at this time? If so - GREAT! If not, go to Joann's with a coupon and grab some cheap fabric. I use Kona Cotton for all of my quilt backs and I used it for my World Map Quilt. You dont need the Kona Cotton or expensive fabric to learn. Buy a Jelly Roll and use that to make your first quilt top. 3. Do you have a cutting station? A Mat with Acrylic Rulers and Rotary Cutter? You will need all of those items. If you are serious about quilting, buy a big mat. I believe mine is 4'x3'. Also - I have a dedicated cutting area of my basement. I used Ikea bookshelves on their side with Ikea Table Tops over them. I will try to upload a picture this weekend - the cutting table is currently covered in yarn, since I took up crocheting. I also invested in an AccuQuilt Go - look into that - IT IS AWESOME, but dont buy it initially. You need to learn how to make accurate cuts without a machine. 4. Lighting, seating, ergonomics. You are going to spend A LOT of time in front of your machine and cutting area. Make sure your table is the correct height. I am 6' tall - so my cutting area is super high - it wouldn't work for my 4'11" sister-in-law. 5. A REALLY good steamer/iron. I bought a Rowenta Iron for about 90 bucks on Amazon. It was great for 18 months. I was using that thing every day for hours. It crapped out after 1.5 years - 6 months after the warranty ended. I ended up buying a ridiculously expensive Steamer Station from Rowenta. Which is THE.BEST.THING.I.EVER.DID! I LOVE IT! It is constant steam - and that is what you need when you are pressing fabric. 6. A REALLY great ironing board. After going through a couple, I made my own. I wrapped an Ikea tabletop with batting and fabric and stapled them to the underside of the tabletop. I placed the ironing tabletop on pretty white Ikea saw horses. The ironing station is a rectangle ironing board now - better than the irregular shape of a normal ironing board. The fabric drapes over it nicely and I can iron much more of the fabric at once than I could with a "regular" ironing board. 7. As you can tell - there is a lot of prep work when you learn how to quilt. I think the best thing to do initially is have all of your supplies together - there is NOTHING more annoying than starting a project only to realize you are missing something. Buy lots of machine needles. Have a ton of your bobbins threaded before hand. I like using cotton thread with my quilts, because I generally use cotton fabric - which is more expensive than nylon/polyester thread. Look into the differences of thread types. I use 80/20 cotton/polyester batting - do a search for the type of batting is best for your projects. I buy my batting by the bolt. Yes, it costs 150-250 bucks per bolt, BUT I can make 15-20 quilts from that bolt. There is SO much more to go over, so hit me up any time with questions. Looking forward to talking with you! ~Sharon (Shar) Gunning. facebook.com/SharonAnnRupert/videos/vb.647777801/10154603606242802/?type=3
I’m creating my very first afghan of my own design…cherry blossom branch. I didn’t have time to make a graph to include the flowers so am making appliqués for them. The branch is graphed in and your video is a Godsend. Thank you. You probably don’t want to make long videos but I’d love to see let’s say an afghan with flowers at the bottom with blue sky and puffy clouds. Ok, maybe the sky and clouds are too much 😂
If you are concerned about loosing your place a magnet board is great to use with graph. I use the strip magnets to keep my place as i go especially with more complicated color schemes. I make a copy of the graph so i do not tear up my original graph when i take it in my bag traveling. I have used the board with printed patterns as well to protect my books as well.
I do not pull yarn from main skein when doing graphgan. All my yarn is on bobbins, my bobbins have a hook on them, purchased from etsy. I then use bulb stitch markers & attach my bobbins to the stitch makers close to where I am using them. The bulb markers will slide in & out to enable use on both sides of work. This prevents any tangling & dangling. Has made graphgan work easier for me
WOW! So much information - but you explained everything so well! I'm getting ready to try one of these for the first time and I think that I can handle it now - THANKS to you! Great video work, lighting, explanations, -- just wonderfully done!!
Hi Mikey I love all your videos. I learned so much with your help. I been planning to make a graphic queen size blanket I don't know how to get started. but watching this video has help me. it a good video thank u for your videos.
I purchased a graphgan pattern, but their instructions were not detailed enough. I didn't go too far with my graphgan because it wasn't turning out as I thought it should. I was making bobbins, but only because my instinct told me to do that, however, I was carrying my yarn thru to the next color since it was a small area, but a lot more stitches than just one or 2. Therefore, it was just too thick, which was going to make the whole project ripply. I want to thank you for your instructions AND tips. I still have to finish watching your tutorial, then probably watch it a couple more times before I rip out one more time what I have done so far! Thanks again, you are amazing!
I’m about to start a tapestry crochet pattern, which at first I thought “too easy” and now I’m like “hum hang on, I’ve never done that before..” and this video is just perfect! Thank you so much for sharing all those tips. That particular pattern is in DC so I’ll do a little swatch and follow your colour change chapter to see how it looks using tall stitches.
Thank you Mikey. I really appreciate your effort. You teach us every little thing to help us improve our skills. Thank you for sharing everything. Please keep on doing these tutorials. I love you 💗
Mikey...thank you for this tutorial. I have done graphaghans with two colors but now am starting one that has 5-6 colors. The author of the pattern did not have the detailed instructions that you have. Thank you again.
I have given myself a challenge to crochet a Christmas tree wall hanging because I really don't have the floor space for an actual tree. Seeing your tutorial about graphgans means I can plot it out better. I plan to hang it on my front door because it is rarely used as a means to enter my home. Thanks
Mikey thank you so much! I started a graphghan for a birthday gift and was so unhappy with the look. After watching this I know where my mistakes were and feel confident that I can tackle my first graphghan!!
Thank you for your videos. They are timeless. So many of us appreciate the time and energy you take to shed light on so many topics and techniques. When we need help you are there, whether four years ago, today when I was needing elucidation, or sometime in the future when some other crocheter wants your vital instructions. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Hey love. What were the finished measurements & how long did it take you?
I giggled when you said, "I don't know why I said that." Serious about your crochet work. 💚
Haha “don’t even argue with me” that’s funny. You said “I don’t know why I said that”? Well I think I know. To be funny. That’s how I took it. Just started a scarf with lettering on it and this gave me exactly what I needed for the issues I was facing. Thank you so much!!
Thank you. I just started crocheting again so happen I saved a lot of your videos. You have a great way of teaching. I’m a visual/Hands on learner. 💙

This technique really will test your patience. For me, my patience is too low to have the will power.
This was awesome! Kudos to you for such a clear and friendly presentation.
25:48 Bobbin - thank you for the tutorial!
Thank you so much. Having done Intarsia with knitting for many years and being a relaive newbie to crochet I didn't think about how different it would be. This tutorial is brilliant and I can now get my project back out of the naughty box and start again with confidence.

hey Mikey It is very easy to follow you and crochet, I want to thank you for your patience and support for us who don't crochet as well as you
I wanted to make my first graphghan and had no idea how to do it. I am a visual learner so I’m always looking for videos. I admit I had to watch it a couple of times for it to sink on….but I’m on my way! 😂👏🏻
Some people tackle a monster as their first try with a million bobbins and give up. You are starting off just right.

Morning Sharon, Thank you so much for the advice...I sent you a friend request on Facebook so we can chat more
Thank you for this tutorial! It’s excellent and exactly what I needed to learn to make graphghans!
Thanks Mikey. Your tutorials on how to make graph anything has helped me make some really cool blankets. Thanks.
v
Amazing walk through, detail oriented and thorough. I learned a lot, THANK YOU!
Ok, maybe the sky and clouds are too much 😂
Awesome tutorial Mikey!!! Like everything u do w those magic fingers!!! Just what I was looking for. Thanks for teaching us. 😘 From California
Thank you! I am having so much fun with your videos!!
Thank you so, so, SO much for this!
couldn't have explained it any better. thank you.
Has made graphgan work easier for me
I love these graphgans. I've never worked one before but will def try it. Love your tutorials. Very well explained. ❤️
WOW! So much information - but you explained everything so well! I'm getting ready to try one of these for the first time and I think that I can handle it now - THANKS to you! Great video work, lighting, explanations, -- just wonderfully done!!
I love all your videos. You have a very nice way of explaining things. Thank you for the great work.
Awesome video! Thank you for making this look a tad bit less intimidating than I originally thought! You rock Mikey!
Finally a great tutorial for beginners!!! Thanks!!
Thank you ...I have just started with graphgrans...this will be very helpful
Its not negotiable, don't argue with me! So funny. Liked and subscribed. Thank you for teaching me yet another crochet technique.
Hi Mikey I love all your videos. I learned so much with your help.
I been planning to make a graphic queen size blanket I don't know how to get started. but watching this video has help me. it a good video thank u for your videos.
You're welcome. Best of luck!
This is an awesome video. I thoroughly enjoy your videos!
You're a great teacher! This helps me a lot. Thank you :)
Don't argue with me!! That was soooo funny!! Great tutorial thank you Mikey!!!
Wonderful! I'm glad I could assist in a small way.
I have given myself a challenge to crochet a Christmas tree wall hanging because I really don't have the floor space for an actual tree. Seeing your tutorial about graphgans means I can plot it out better. I plan to hang it on my front door because it is rarely used as a means to enter my home. Thanks
👏👏👏👏Bravo Mikey! Even mu simple brain can understand yoi on this!
