Hi Danny1 Thank You for very informative videos. I am worried about my Zygopetalum orchid. The leaves look very healthy and it is starting to bloom now, but the pseudobulbs are have wrinkles. How can I be sure that give the plant the right amount of water.Kind regards agata
I have a phal in a spot that is getting more and more sunlight as we approach summer... its leaves are purple. should I move it to a different spot? eventually it will be brighter and hotter in that spot. P.S the purple leaves are beautiful.
Hi Danny! I bought an oncidium twinkle a year and a half ago. It bloomed twice but lately it's not looking very happy. It came with three pseudobulbs but the oldest recently died. The youngest bulb looks perfectly healthy but the older bulb, that is still alive, is slightly wrinkly. It's sprouting a 4th pseudobulb but after a growth spurt in may and june, it stopped growing. I decided to repot it and found that a large portion of the roots were rotted. I removed the dead pseudobulb and some rotten roots. I have repotted it into only fine fir bark to let the roots breath more (I had previously repotted into fir bark and sphagnum moss). It's now in a plastic pot with a lot of ventilation but that pot is inside of a ceramic pot. It's summer here right now so I am going to start placing it outside in just its plastic pot during the day in a spot without direct sun. Do you think this will help him recover? Is there anything else I can do to help? What do you think I did wrong to cause this? Thank you! This is a link to a picture of him: tinypic.com/r/23k3pqw/9
Hi, yes I think there are great chances that he will make a full recovery :) it doesn't look very bad and the new growth will create new roots. To help him the best thing to do is to make sure the medium doesn't stay dry too long. I would remove a few pieces from the psb, to avoid the base rotting, but just a few. Don;t keep him in direct sun now, bright light but no sun to prevent too much dehydration. I think humidity is the best way to promote roots and keep the orchid from losing too much water. If you can provide it it's great, if not, try to maintain at least the top of the medium slightly damp. I hope this helped :)
Miss Orchid Girl, Your videos are very informative, thank you for taking the time to make them. I received my very first Miltoniopsis orchid a few months ago and sadly she is not doing so well after I repotted her. For starters I put her in a clay pot that is way too large. Consequently- I now realize that was a bad choice. I also previously sprayed her with water from above and have caused a serious problem. I made some major rookie mistakes and now she is rotting away. After watching most of your videos I am planning on repotting in a smaller plastic pot with holes and will water by dunking in another pot. However, an entire section with a pseudobulb rotted up and is dry now with other sections remaining healthy. I would like to know if I should attempt to remove this entire dead section maybe by cutting it off with a knife? Please tell me the best approach. Thanks you!
Hi Brittani, sorry to hear about your problems, but I hope your orchid will recover fast.Yes I would try to separate the rotten pseudobulbs using a sharp knife. You can also spay the base of the orchid (roots and base of psb) with some hydrogen peroxide 3% to eliminate any other rots or molds before potting it. A smaller container will be better as it will retain less water and limit rotting. Let me know how it goes and good luck!
MissOrchidGirl Thanks for getting back to me so soon! I followed all of your instructions and performed some orchid surgery :( I also applied some cinnamon to her wounds. I got the perfect container for her and put holes in it. At least she looks better for now. I will wait and see how she responds, with a little bit of hope maybe she will recover. I will keep you posted. Thank you for all of your help! :)
Hello danni, I’m having some trouble with my almost 3 year old sharry baby, it has grown 3 pseudo bulbs now, but the leaves keep wrinkling, and then growth stops,,, please help me understand what is going on
But how do you know the roots have rotten? I have problems with an oncidium: the leaves are green and look healthy, i even got new growths. However, the pseudobulbs, all of them, are really wrinkled. I do not now how this could be caused though by dehidration given the fact that I have always puored them and even now the soil is actually humid. What can I do to check whether the roots are rotten?
Hi!! Love your channel. Hope you can help. One of the cattleyas I was rehabbing over the past several months, which went from almost no roots to dozens of small new roots and is starting to grow a new flower spike, suddenly developed soft pseudobulbs. They're soft and moist though they were firm just a week or 2 ago. Still green though, no brown or any other discoloration. And the roots look great. Are the pseudobulbs rotting? Maybe some type of infection? It can't be from the new grow lights, can it? Do I need to remove the pseudobulbs or even toss the plant altogether? I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks!!
Hi, that is a Dendrobium Stardust :) ruclips.net/video/wQlFyHCVw9s/видео.html I foudn it a bit tricky for my previous environment, and was too prone to keikis.. thus it depleted itself :( but I want to try it again if I ever find one :)
Hi Danni I have been having problems with my pseudobulbs getting wrinkly. The medium is still really moist and the bulbs were really healthy when it was bought at the store. I'm not sure if it's that the water in my area is too hard but the garden centre I bought them from must be watering with the same water as me as it's close by. I check them everyday and don't even let my oncidiums/intergenerics go totally dry, and pick them up to see when the pots are lighter. I'm not sure where I'm going wrong.
Amrita Mohanty Hi Amrita, you might not do anything wrong, the wrinkly psb means that there is a root system issue. The roots of your orchids might be rotting away due to old acidic media. I encourage everyone to repot new orchids after they are done blooming as the media might be inappropriate or full of pests or broken down. So repot your orchids and see how the roots are doing. Use fresh new media and a suitable pot. As the orchids grow they will produce a new root system which will be happy and will feed the entire plant. Good luck!
Hi, I have an oncidium that I bought that is mounted on to a piece of wood and I've recently noticed that several of the older pseudobulbs have lost all their leaves. What could cause this and what should I do?
Мира Дюлгерова I use 3% concentration straight from the bottle, you can find this in pharmacies usually with this concentration. Don't use anything higher than this
Hi there! Thank you for this, I have some questions please, or actually a call for some advice which would be much appreciated. Suddenly, nearly all the blooms of my Odontoglossum are drying up and falling off. I bought the plant one month ago and at the time all the blooms from both pseudobulbs were fully open. I noticed the flowers started dropping off immediately after its most recent watering a few days ago. I normally water the plant about once a week to once every 10 days by placing the pot in a bucket of room temperature tap water for 15 minutes followed by a few sprays of Orchid Myst. I do this with my Phalaenopsis orchids and I’ve never faced this issue. Both pseudobulbs are a healthy green colour and feel firm although one pseudobulb has a very small number of fine wrinkles, the other does not have this. Do you know why the blooms are suddenly falling off this rapidly? What are the next steps to take? Thank you in advance!
Hi, I know this is super late so I hope you can answer it. My orchid pseudobulbs, the new leaf growth is minimal and seems to not be growing much and the tips of the new growth are a little brown. Is that normal?
Hi Danny. I purchased two Phalaenopsis recently. Here's the situation. My wife filled the pots with soil and compost, unaware of the proper medium required. Expectedly, the leaves and orchids started to yellow and wilt in a matter of days. Hoping to save them, I re-potted both plants with a fresh mix of charcoal, and retained some of the coconut husks which came with the plant. They looked healthier for another week or so before suffering from the same predicament - the yellowing and wilting persisted. Suspecting some of the soil and compost weren't properly removed, I removed both plants and gave the roots and medium a good rinse before potting them again. However, I noticed the roots weren't thick and "springy" like they ought to be. Rather, they appear thin and limp despite the medium being quite dry. What am I doing wrong? P.S. - I am using horticultural charcoal.
+Andy Sim Hi Andy, well it might be a case of stem rot, or a rot somewhere due to the extreme moisture the soil provided. it might help if I can see a picture as it is a bit complicated to figure out what it is blindly :P just upload a picture to photobucket, flickr or g plus and share the link in a comment here, I'll take a look :) hope I can help
+MissOrchidGirl Hi Danny. Thanks for replying! I suspect it's a case of bud blast or root rot since the flowers are gradually yellowing before falling off. I'll take a pic and send them to you soonest!
Hey Danny! Thank you for your advice that you gave me last year about my phal orchids. Repotting them got rid of the gnats and I even have one that is growing a flower spike! I decided that I needed a new challenge and ordered a cattalya off the internet. It arrived in ok shape, the roots where green but a little wrinkled. There were a couple of places on the leaves that looked sunburned. I've been using a cider mix that my phals. love, so I cleaned the plant with peroxide and repotted it...The new little cat. seemed to be doing fine for the first month, she even bloomed a few flowers, but all of the sudden, two leaves have yellowed and fallen completely off. The pseudo bulbs from where leaves have fallen off are kinda yellow. I cut off the other burnt looking places on the other leaves and put cinnamon on the wound, cause I thought it might be an infection. No other leaves are turning yellow, but the roots don't look as healthy as they should be... any thoughts would be appreciated!
My zygopetalum and brassia both have pseudobulbs that a somehow bent? I think it's because they may have been growing towards light at some point, but i'm not sure. I would however like them to be straight as de long leaves are quite a hassle. Any idea if this is repairable?
+NeonSprinklePie Hi, yes I am pretty sure it is due to the light source, some orchids are very prone to this. Here is a video on how I train the growths to be more straight ruclips.net/video/pCOW1AIGEgo/видео.html
hi danny...i recently rescued an odontoglossum from a local super market...the pseudobulbs are rather shriveled ..how can get the pseudobulbs more plumper...if you have any advise i would love to hear :) many thanks paul
+KID AT PLAY PRODUCTIONS well it depends what the cause is, if the orchid wasn't watered enough lately, this will fix itself with some proper watering. If the orchid doesn't have roots, the process is not as simple. It needs a repot as most probably the media isn't suited and then kept moist to promote some roots. here is a video on this subject ruclips.net/video/Orwn022R4to/видео.html
I'm still confused.my psb was wrinkled when it had flowers.and after repot and flower cane cut it got Bette a bit.but it's still not plump.instead it grew two shoots...what do I do now..I water once every two days.and it's in a bright sunny place so it shouldn't have any rot or too moist inside.
Hi Marlina, if it is growing new shoots all is well, make sure you don;t water it too often though. The wrinkled psb takes time to regain its shape, so just be patience for the orchid to produce a strong root system :)
Oh really..wow I'm glad to know it's well.between how long does it take to recover? Few months? The shoots grow quite fast!!I have a dendrobium that has a shoot too.I'm so happy.
I recently got an orchid that was severely dehydrated and I haven't been able to get it back to normal,I don't know what to do😔 I don't want to show you A photo of it because the bulbs are so wrinkly looking there's a total of five and four of them are wrinkled
Hi Bryan, a picture would be very useful actually, don't worry I have some really sad looking orchids too :) tell me a bit more about the orchid, what species it is, did you repot it, how did you water it, did it have roots? dehydration is caused by lack of roots most probably in your case, so we need to get the orchid hydrated. The new growth will start to produce new roots and that will hydrate the older bulbs as well. I have a video on helping root production here ruclips.net/video/pmPXOfyDW1g/видео.html and if you want to send me a picture just upload a picture to photobucket, flickr, instagram, imgur or g plus and share the link in a comment here, I'll take a look :)
This is what she looks like, I was told she recently flowered when I got her she had dry stems from the top so I cut them off so she uses the energy in trying to rehydrate.A couple weeks have passed and she hasn't been progressing😔
That's awesome :D mine have these wrinkles, well more like lines that define the shape, they are not round and plump like others.. well as long s they are healthy :P
I have watched several of these classes. Very informative.
Orchid nature? Wow this is old but still good and informative, so thank you
Should have looked this up sooner. I was totally confused as to what was going on. Thanks for your helps as always
love oncidiums -- glad I found one of your old videos!
Thank you

After the Sherry Baby you had the next pic. What is the name of that orchird please.
Thanks Julia SA

Thank you, good video, very helpful!
