  • Know how to propagate rubber plant from cuttings in easy steps. The propagation steps to grow a rubber plant (Ficus Elastica) from cutting include making propagation media, taking rubber cuttings, rooting hormone for rubber plant propagation, planting the rubber cutting, transplanting, etc. The rubber tree propagation method shown is also good for baby rubber plant propagation, rubber plant burgundy, variegated rubber plant, and ruby.

I planted a leaf with about one inch of petiole (stalk) it was just an extra leaf that I didn’t want to throw away after pruning and replanting the main cutting. First, I placed them in water for a month, no progress. Then I decided to transfer the main cutting and the extra leaf with stalk into a pot of soil. after 2 months, I tried to test and pull it out of the pot thinking that it’s just dead now but the leaf with petiole grew a healthy amount of roots! It was just wishful thinking really. I was very surprised. Let’s see what it does next!

Enclosing the cuttings in bag ensures high humid environment, needed for rooting. The cutting will rot if the soil is not free draining. The rubber cuttings do not need water at this stage as there are no roots.

Yes, you can plant the cutting in rainy season. If you take a cutting from the growing top of the stem with a bud, then it will root even without the hormone. You need not to cut now, if it is only one leaf. If more, then open the pot and remove others. Do not worry, the cutting will root, however, it may take 2 to 4 months depending on the cutting thickness and temperature. Keep the pot in shade at a warm place and water less, over watering will rot the cutting. Best of luck.

Rubber plant shed leaves dur to underwatering or overwatering. If the leaves of your rubber plant started dropping leaves from bottom, then it shows plant is not getting enough water at the bottom of pot. If the leaves become soggy before falling, means overwatering. If the soil of your plant is dry, then water until it comes out of the pot from bottom. Then water only when the top 1 inch soil becomes dry, probably in 8-10 days. I hope you are keeping your plant in shade. Good luck.
