Totally agree with this lesson. People ask me how I do riffs and say it's too hard when all it is is just breaking down consecutive notes in a riff then practicing singing them slowly and eventually mastering to sing that riff at faster speeds. I won't say I'm amazing at it, but I LOVE when a singer knows when to use riffs. Also, I'm aware that riffs don't define an amazing singer, but I know for a fact I go crazy for artists who do so.

this lesson was so simple in nature, but so mind blowing for me. i’ve heard so many riffs and been bewildered by them.
even though id never heard this song, and when you originally sang the riff i had no idea how to do it- when you broke it down, i realized “i already knew the first half of this riff!!” i never thought to add on the two last notes. then your words of wisdom at the end made me realize this may be the case with hundreds of riffs i was confused by before. thank you very much for this simple but brilliant video.

Just like instrumentalists woodshed, riffers have to, too? Makes sense. I guess I never thought about that and just assumed some people had the inherent skills and others didn't. Now that I type that, though, I see how silly that sounds 🤪 Thanks, Justin! (If any of you haven't had a chance to take with Justin -- or any of the NYVC staff, really -- you should think about it… they're all amazing in person or over Skype… I'm so stoked to be seeing Justin this weekend to start a vocal makeover!)

I am from India, in our classical singing riffs lasts for 1 hour XD ... we call it 'taan' .. you should chack out Justin! I think it will open a new world for you. This riffs in our singing is based on 'Raag' which are kind of a scale but you play only some of the notes of that scale and using that notes you embellish a simple melody in infinite ways!

Justin my issue is I can't even recognize all notes in a riff even when playing a songs at 0.5 or 0.25 speed . The amount of notes squeazed is crazy, I can't hear them properly, how can I sing it. I tried recently Beyonce's "Woman like me" bridge riff and Mariah's "I am Free" or "If it's Over"
