Totally agree with this lesson. People ask me how I do riffs and say it's too hard when all it is is just breaking down consecutive notes in a riff then practicing singing them slowly and eventually mastering to sing that riff at faster speeds. I won't say I'm amazing at it, but I LOVE when a singer knows when to use riffs. Also, I'm aware that riffs don't define an amazing singer, but I know for a fact I go crazy for artists who do so.
Very very helpful, Justin! And you never fail to make me laugh and brighten my mood. :-)
this lesson was so simple in nature, but so mind blowing for me. i’ve heard so many riffs and been bewildered by them.
even though id never heard this song, and when you originally sang the riff i had no idea how to do it- when you broke it down, i realized “i already knew the first half of this riff!!” i never thought to add on the two last notes. then your words of wisdom at the end made me realize this may be the case with hundreds of riffs i was confused by before. thank you very much for this simple but brilliant video.
We're so glad this helped you!!! Thanks for watching and commenting, Bill! :) -NYVC

Very good again......well done...
Just like instrumentalists woodshed, riffers have to, too? Makes sense. I guess I never thought about that and just assumed some people had the inherent skills and others didn't. Now that I type that, though, I see how silly that sounds 🤪 Thanks, Justin! (If any of you haven't had a chance to take with Justin -- or any of the NYVC staff, really -- you should think about it… they're all amazing in person or over Skype… I'm so stoked to be seeing Justin this weekend to start a vocal makeover!)
We're glad this helped you, Stars! And, we're so glad you had such a positive experience with the NYVC community! Thank you! :) -NYVC

Awesome to hear! -NYVC
what other scales in addition to the pentatonic scale are rifts affiliated with? ...what scales are specifically associated with jazz or gospel rifts? By the way, I really appreciate the time and energy you invest in producing these videos for our benefit. thank you!
Thanks, I'll check it out!
HI! I research for your great suggestion but I couldn't find that App Oido Perfecto for IOS (iphone or mac. Its just for Android :(
Do you know any similar App such as good as Oido Perfecto that works on Mac?
Tks!
Jazz, R&B, Gospel, etc are all mostly based on the pentatonic scale
how to riff fast with combination of vowels and notes ?
Justin i wish i could have you as my vocal coach
The New York Vocal Coaching Staff as well as Mr. Stoney do offer lessons in NYC as well as via SKYPE Darren! - NYVC
I am from India, in our classical singing riffs lasts for 1 hour XD ... we call it 'taan' .. you should chack out Justin! I think it will open a new world for you. This riffs in our singing is based on 'Raag' which are kind of a scale but you play only some of the notes of that scale and using that notes you embellish a simple melody in infinite ways!
Very cool, Saziz! Thanks for sharing! -NYVC
@@NewYorkVocalCoaching You are welcome Master Justin :))
If you love Riffs just listen to any song of Boyz ll Men. "Wanya Morris" The greatest vocalist who is actually on key with their runs that are beautifully executed.
Can u teach me the song called " Stoney" by lobo--/ stoney ** Happy all the time, stoney life is Summer time -- the joy you'll have living every day Stoney how I love your every way.

Justin my issue is I can't even recognize all notes in a riff even when playing a songs at 0.5 or 0.25 speed . The amount of notes squeazed is crazy, I can't hear them properly, how can I sing it. I tried recently Beyonce's "Woman like me" bridge riff and Mariah's "I am Free" or "If it's Over"
It can take time to develop the skill of hearing all the notes! Keep at it! -NYVC
Justin r u here??? Please i want to know how to count notes after listening to a riff like sa-a-a-a-a-ad , like how do i say how many notes are there just by listening to that ?????
Hi Mini! We're pretty sure we got your email about this, and our team sent a response! :) We hope it helps! -NYVC
Leonardo Dicaprio? iz dat yuh?
Did you see the Leo parody Justin did? It's here on RUclips. Check it out. ruclips.net/video/7fCHriJOl80/видео.html
What if I sound like a dying cat every time I try to riff? And I practice🙄
Start slow, Lexy! You can do it! :D -NYVC
Why do people do the finger wag with riffs?
Lol! Sometimes "physicalizing the sound" helps singers. :) -NYVC
LMAO 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
...no baby comes out of the womb going [riffing]
Omg that is a hilarious mental image!
LOL 😂 -NYVC
Justin pourqoui votre voix est jolie?😍
We're glad you like it, Aldi! -NYVC
