Happy New Year Matt! Had this video on my mind all day and happy I’m finally getting to sit back and enjoy it. Before I start I had to leave a comment reminding you that no matter what is going on, there are people who look forward to your content and have their day genuinely improved because they see a new video from you. Thank you for all the hard work you do to bring us entertainment.
while watching this i was struck by how smooth it felt to watch and how your editing and production skills are really top notch. i can't really point to anything specific besides the bit with "lance kills people", but overall this video was a real banger. the sprites were great as always, including the animated front sprite that we only see for two seconds in the hall of fame, and the unfortunately unused hyperspace burger. tombstoner, brother, and wishing you the best with your home repairs.
Appreciate it! Yea I’ve been curating a specific style for years at this point but it seems that a bigger channel is straight copying them but I’ll sit on that tangent for a bit lol. I generally do the game cartridge, an arrow, a hyper-specific Pokémon image drawn after a TCG card so I have a VERY tough time seeing how someone could do all those things without knowing lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 well … unlike jrose who is doing stuff in the gen only … you have a lot more with your cross gen to push the time table back but eventually gen1 will be finished on runs. I can’t speak for most but I have so far enjoyed every video from you that I’ve seen. Might just be because I feel like your more analytical then the rest and actually break down the numbers on stuff that matters … also your overlay is by far the top tier. Now idk about others but I’d be interested in seeing other stuff you have interest in. Other games you like … maybe stuff completely different like hobbies or sports or just life. Thinking to other content guys as a reference. Mdb does some other games. If you know Phly daily he would do little family posts here and there. Honestly just follow your heart and put stuff you like out there. See what the rest of us idiots like. See what you like too. Hell id be halfway interested to see a video on your college work and courses as someone who never went to college.
Thanks! I’ve been wanting to do another channel for a while. Pokémon is a passion and something I’m comfortable with but at the end of the day, it’s always similar and the niche is drying up rapidly. The community aspect from other creators is gone as well. I’d like to do some long form analysis on some other games I like or something of that nature. I could even do a Pokémon video at some point but I’d like to dive into why I like some games a lot and why they are so good to me but my plate is so full atm and with the department of education in jeopardy, I gotta go year round to get done with school so it’s scary in that regard too. Idk, just some thoughts. I feel bad that I’m not growing and my videos aren’t seeing much progression but if you look at other channels, it’s the same. There’s even this nagging annoyance I’ve had lately where it looks like someone is just copying my thumbnail style I’ve worked on for 3 years to be different from the big channels and it’s just one of those things that might be a sign. Sometimes I think of huge projects I’d love to do with like 3/4 Pokémon in one video but when I think of doing like weeks worth of work for like 40 dollars max, it’s sickening lmao. I just have too many ways I could be spending my time that would benefit me more.
@ try something that is a passion project as a random video. Maybe do something that isn’t the “pokemon day” of Sunday … like throw out a random video on a Thursday that’s something different that you just want to make a video on. See what the other monkeys are interested in seeing videos on. Hell I have one guy who did world of warship videos who is now kinda branching into the 3d printing of ship models and sharing the print blueprints with us. He will make a ship then do a video on the ship in the game. At the end of the day though Matt I’ve been happy watching what you do and just want you to be successful. If that means forgetting RUclips for a while and grinding the real life or spending time with your new born kid … or making new videos wish you the best and success at it. Just don’t let something stop you as little as not getting the attention or subs from the masses. Unless you want to lean into RUclips fully then I hope you all of them
I like the statistics breakdown to show thenprobability of the two strategies, I don’t recall ever seeing that on a Pokémon speed run channel. I love math and find it really intriguing. These videos are getting great man, been a fan awhile great to see them getting even better!!
Glad you enjoy it! It depends on the metrics, I guess. Bigger RUclipsrs just want to pump out content for money, others just focus on volume or single runs to get a video out. I just focus on getting the best run and try to articulate weird parts of the run lol.
That was an epic run! Your content is the highlight of my fortnights. I really liked the sprite work as well. Thanks for showing off the leftovers art, it was really amusing to see.
Yea I generally just make the ROM blind without tailoring it to solve everything and then design the overlay/held items that might be used before I even hit the blind run and the result are things like Bugsy’s Scyther and never seeing leftovers! It still makes it a fun journey.
There’s always a balance to strike between just going over stuff like it’s common knowledge and explaining some things in case you aren’t familiar! Glad to see I got a decent balance and you enjoyed!
It's cool to see that a game you've ran sooo many times you still find new ways to save time, i.e psyduck. Hope to see you and the other speedrunners compete again in the future btw!
Awww man! I watch EVERY video you put out! Doesn't matter the generation, it's just highly entertaining and it was especially fun watching this while completing my own challenge in Silver 😎🤙 gotta level up a touch more and I should be able to beat Red
Appreciate that, brother. I think the best course of action is to just play what I want to play while glancing at the numbers. At the end of the day or whenever I decide I want to take a break from this hobby, no one is going to care what games I played or trying to squeeze out an extra 200 views by being optimal with run choices just won’t mean anything so have fun with it!
Didn't expect to see a gen 2 crossgen run but I am all for it. And also because it is the perfect opportunity for another Rocket Radio Tower session with my favorite character; the admin with 32 koffing and 2 weezing.
I’m really excited to see a Gen 2 cross-generation run! I hope we can look back someday and have a fun tier list like ya do with Gen 1. On Hoopa here though, that Bugsy match-up was *rough*, good job pushing through. If only it learned Reflect rather than Light Screen, lol
I’m determined that one day people will come around to Crystal. It’s not my favorite but I enjoy playing it once every few months at least but it hasn’t been a great reception over the last year or so and I can’t really figure it out!
For what it’s worth, I think you’ve gotten me to come around to it notably more than when ya started it. I think Crystal is just kinda… weird? Like, I always thought it was a super fun game to play (so much so that I think SoulSilver might still be my favorite game). But for the challenge run-viewing perspective, it seems harder to follow? The early game is so low-level comparable to the rest of the games, the total play time gets really elongated with Kanto, the balancing for you as a challenge runner often gets stuck in the question of “how do I beat the hyper-inflated stats of Red?”.
I think there were a lot of these kinds “existential” questions and tbh I think you’ve done a really good job of answering those concerns. You took a solid stance that the game ends after beating Red, so there wasn’t any confusion or “what ifs” on the part of the viewer. You’ve done a great job cutting out a *lot* of the filler of the game, like most of Kanto and the overly-elongated Rocket sections. You’ve gotten really effective movement and pathing down and so it feels at the same level of “polish” that you show with Gen 1. And you’ve done it consistently enough that I think people might be able to better overcome their “nostalgia vision” for just Gen 1 and hopefully give it more of a try to see your fun vibes continue in the different game. Cause ultimately, I do hope people come around, I don’t think I knew even before you started, but Gen 2 still feel a lot like Gen 1, but with some unique challenges I don’t think we get to see in the previous game.
You hit the nail on the head and that’s my biggest gripe with Gen 2. It’s always about the overlevled Red and specifically his Snorlax in these runs. The reason I do it now and refuse to do Steven Stone in Gen 3 is that the speedrun counts red as the end and doesn’t do the optional battle in Gen 3. Pretty insightful comments though and I value that a lot. I’m just working to see what I can do to keep people engaged but I have had the feeling that solo running is just becoming less viewed as a whole. Jrose could toss out anything and get 350k minimum and Scott would do 100k on anything but go look now. It’s bad!
Another real one! Was reading some of the other comments and feel free to try something else. I have enjoyed all your work so far and hope your channel grows, but also hope you don’t burn yourself out!
I’m sure I’ll get around to it at some point. I wouldn’t really say burning out because I don’t have a ton of time as it is but when you spill most of your free time into something and don’t see improvement and even a drop off, it makes you question if you are spending your time wisely, especially knowing RUclips is just a hobby. It would be the same as someone deciding to spend 10 hours a week on playing with legos when they could grind out a chapter for school or spend some extra time with family, I guess. No difference!
Hoopa Unbound is one of my favorite mixed attackers (alongside Iron Valiant). In competitive battles, its mixed attacking prowess and insane range of coverage make it almost impossible for stall to wall (the downside being that it's not the best answer to fast offensive teams).
Don’t have your heart hurt over that lol. It isn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things. It’s not like the winner went on to become a huge/successful channel and remember I won the next, and probably last one! To keep it real, I still feel I shoulda won. Not to get into conspiracy territory but out of all the things I could say, the ‘winning’ run didn’t even follow the 5 rules laid out but was still accepted for…reasons but none of that stuff was never elaborated on because it took 14 months to reveal the winner and during both competitions all you heard was how it was a ‘financial disaster’ to make that sort of content and other things that really turn you off of that sort of thing.
It is what it is! I don’t feel any type of way about it but I was a little naive thinking that showing out and doing great would actually get some recognition lol. Learning the lesson is enough in itself!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I'm honestly still in awe that after almost 3 years, nobody ever seems to question how this single individual always somehow gets the luckiest, best runs in a mere few attempts and always gets the right luck in the right moments. Not just in the race but also other, technically irrelevant runs, it's always been weird to me.
There were a lot of questions! I’d say at least 20+ people were like ‘alright so no one is going to publicly say anything?’ Haha. Sounds like you have some insight. I’d love to hear more!
Hoopa was pretty cool with the leftovers ,it was peak for me.😊 Dark psychic types are usually interesting Pokémon, and it's a great duo until you get hit by a bug move. Stab fury cutter multipled by 2 and the 50% extra damage,is brutal. So I can understand why you had to plan the run around Bugsy. Even for grass types fury cutter is a problem, because it's really strong for early game and it can help a lot in a pinch. Dynamic punch or nightmare are great solutions to manage the Snorlax. That's why I think most Pokémon in gen 2 have access to these moves. Hoppa didn't manage to get a time under 3:08 but it did manage to get a place my heart with this awesome back sprite.😮 I wonder if it would be better in Pokémon red🤔.
It might get its chance to shine in Red one day! You never know but the lack of elemental punches definitely hurts it. Being double weak to any early gym leader SUCKS and I couldn’t believe my eyes when practicing it lol. I thought I’d have to go to 18 or something for sure.
@GymLeaderMatt1987 Yeah I would have grinded it to 18 because of fury cutter, because I'm used to play safe, which produces slower results. If the king's rock was available early on , then Bugsy is not an issue,as long as you're faster than the Scyther.
I really appreciate going into the numbers on the luck needed for fights like Bugsy. Without allowing as many restarts (or having time to physically do them), I wonder if Hoopa Confined might have been able to do better than Unbound despite its lower stats. 🤔 I can’t think of any Dark or Ghost type trainers that can withstand base 150 SpA except Karen’s Umbreon, and even that looks like it would do less than 50% damage per hit. You could also potentially Dynamic Punch it. 😂 Then again, Red’s Charizard would survive Thunderbolt to attack twice, and it looks like Red’s Pikachu would have an outspeed on Hoopa Confined (or even Unbound at any lower level), and that extra damage should cause Blastoise to attack rather than dance, and maybe Espeon would attack too if you somehow made it past the turtle after Thunder, two Flamethrowers, and a Surf. 🤦 So, uh, nevermind, and thanks for coming along with me on this time-wasting tangent. 😭 Thanks for the video! If you had gotten to use that Leftovers art, with so many burgers in hand(s), Hoopa would probably also need to grab itself some kind of refreshing beverage. 🤔🤔🤔
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Sorry man, I always try to write something I think is more insightful than a simple thanks, and I went way overboard this time for no reason. 😭
Ain't it hilarious how one F'ing move on a single F'ing pokiman. Completely flipped the dominant Attack stat in gen2 when compared to gen1. I mean that Red's snorlax's amnesia flipped the dominant Attack type from Special to Physical... 😂😂😂
Don’t forget levels. Solo running works most of the time but the bad leveling curve and the special wall that is Snorlax makes these a slog sometimes lol.
I love playing Crystal at night. Helps Pokemon like pichu get exp on poliwags that’s 40 exp can help a sluggish run when you have a type advantage training that early
Damn, what a monster! For the Gengar not using hypnosis, maybe it’s a typing thing? Hoopla is a psychic/dark type, so maybe after checking type effectiveness, it decided to use scary face since it’s a normal type move? Idk Also oh my god I need to send you that spreadsheet, my bad
Yea I admittedly don’t deep dive into Gen 2 AI often but I thought status alone would be enough without looking at typing since it wasn’t immune but honestly I don’t care enough to really know haha.
Ooo I wonder how Meowscarada would do? I don't have the analytical mind to think it thru, I just love it so much ❤ I was surprised when Hoopa struggled, but then again I missed that whole generation completely 😅
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 that's fair, and totally sucks. Don't feel like it has the pressure of a request or anything tho, keep doing you! That's why we're here!
I’m having a major problem now where I got a ton of ideas but only so much time. Realistically, I can do like 25-27 videos in a year and I already have an idea for like 10 with 55 more on a pile I’ve been wanting to do for years. It would genuinely be amazing to have the time to do 60+ videos in a year and actually push through everything to the point where I’m actively looking for fresh ideas but sadly people like you that really support things are few and far between and I gotta do a 9-5, go to college, be a dad, and then make time for videos after 5 other priorities are fulfilled lol.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 I feel that. Honestly I don't have editing skills or anything but if you ever have something you want a hand with, I'm here for you. You are by far my favorite creator, and it's 100% because of this kind of openness and humanity. If you needed to stop creating entirely for a while, I'll still be here. You're relatable, kind, I wanna see you succeed, and you've inspired me to keep working for that success myself instead of just settling for getting by. I don't wanna call myself a "fan" but I'm 100% your biggest supporter outside of your actual personal relationships. We got this, brother. We're gonna make it
Parasect was absolutely a waste of time. I could go on and on about that slog and the problems associated with it but it’s like 3 years old and no one cares lol. At the end of the day it amounted to a video that got average to below average views with the caveat that it took 10x the amount of time to make and I was forced to wait 14 fucking months to release it lol. 14 months!

Hoopa Unbound is one of my favorite mixed attackers (alongside Iron Valiant). In competitive battles, its mixed attacking prowess and insane range of coverage make it almost impossible for stall to wall (the downside being that it's not the best answer to fast offensive teams).
Yea it hits hard and has some pretty nice coverage for sure!
My heart still hurts for you on the Parasect race
@ I feel you dude, a lot went into it and you definitely put in so much work, it showed. Sucks that the payoff from that wasn’t very satisfying
14:23 Maybe Gengar is just “too lazy & doesn’t want to” too 🤔
Hoopa was pretty cool with the leftovers ,it was peak for me.😊
Dark psychic types are usually interesting Pokémon, and it's a great duo until you get hit by a bug move.
Scyther is very fast though!
You definitely deserve much more subscribers
Thanks but that’s not something I can control so I do what I can!
Thanks for the video!
If you had gotten to use that Leftovers art, with so many burgers in hand(s), Hoopa would probably also need to grab itself some kind of refreshing beverage. 🤔🤔🤔
Who knows with the what ifs! I just know the confined didn’t pique my interests quite as much!
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 Sorry man, I always try to write something I think is more insightful than a simple thanks, and I went way overboard this time for no reason. 😭
Just wanted to say, you're not the first pokemon solo challenger I've watched but you're my favorite. Crack a sodie pop for me, fam
Appreciate that brother!
Back for more ! Imma pop a sodi to see how hoopa whoopa
That’s what I like to hear!
Happy New Year, Matt!
Appreciate it!
Solo running works most of the time but the bad leveling curve and the special wall that is Snorlax makes these a slog sometimes lol.
reading the learnset, "HYPERSPACE F*" really makes it look like some differnt wording.
They really said fuck the 12 character limit as the generations go on. There's like 57 letters in some moves these days lol.
Oh Buck brewin Chuck.. dude keeps the whole town lit
I’m sure I’m just tired but I don’t understand this comment at all lmao.
@GymLeaderMatt1987 buck is slang for moonshine
Today I learned!
I love playing Crystal at night. Helps Pokemon like pichu get exp on poliwags that’s 40 exp can help a sluggish run when you have a type advantage training that early
I know that’s the truth but when you have to grind wild Pokémon, you might as well turn the timer off and just enjoy it lol.
I expected you to fish for a 5% Fury Cutter miss, but yeah, confusion works too I guess. :)
That coulda worked but the 1/20 chance to miss never came up! I’d take the win any way I could!
Real ones sacrifice consistency for speed.
For sure. You gotta decide if you are actually going fast or doing baby mode lol.
Hey Matt, hope new year is going well
It’s definitely going!
Damn, what a monster! For the Gengar not using hypnosis, maybe it’s a typing thing? Hoopla is a psychic/dark type, so maybe after checking type effectiveness, it decided to use scary face since it’s a normal type move? Idk
Also oh my god I need to send you that spreadsheet, my bad
Yea I admittedly don’t deep dive into Gen 2 AI often but I thought status alone would be enough without looking at typing since it wasn’t immune but honestly I don’t care enough to really know haha.
Hoopa is new to me. Looks great 👍
Thanks!
CHUCK BROTHER!
Appreciate it!
Ooo I wonder how Meowscarada would do? I don't have the analytical mind to think it thru, I just love it so much ❤
I was surprised when Hoopa struggled, but then again I missed that whole generation completely 😅
I’m sure I’ll get to all the starters eventually. Last one I tried was Incineroar and I still remember being sad at how bad the video did lol.
We're gonna make it
For some reason hoopa remenber me to tusk or dirty deeds done dirty cheap
Whatever works for you!
ngl, I found your channel through Scott’s channel and mostly the race videos, actually, so hopefully it wasn’t a waste of time for you.
14 months!
6:25 but could you get into that?
I won’t be home until February to be able to look at that lol.
lightning fast
Not quite world record speeds but not that far off.
A greater special attack than Arceus? Blasphemy
Ha, there were 10 Pokémon in Gen 1 alone with equal or higher special.
You said you had a patch for this?
Yea, I have the files for members/patreons!
Hoopaaaaah
I love hoopa it my favorite
One of the 5 people out there, haha.
Yay 2025 video 🎉
Yea!
Real one
Appreciate that, brother!
You could've beat scyther just use destiny bond 😂
Oh yea. I could also just delete Scyther from the files.
Unbound is the best.
It was pretty good!
Yooo
If you do a solo run of Piloswine please nickname it piloSh. Similar to the Tauros nickname.
Ha, I’m willing to do bad Gen 1 runs in the name of completing the Gen 1 tier list but life is too short to waste on Piloswine lmao.
Couldn’t agree more man!
