There is logic to this. I’ve had like really juicy burgers that like drizzled down your arm as soon as you bite into it. So the bigger bun will indeed soaks up the juice and keep the burger staple. In addition you can also cut it in half.

For me, I put my hands in a 4-8 o'clock position (imagine if the burger was a clock dial) and not in a 3-9. That way, I can somewhat prevent any spilling of food on the back of the burger. Can only work if you have large hands though.
