Hey, everyone! Apologies about the random skip in the beginning. 5 days after this video went live, WWE claimed what was originally a Here Comes The Pain trailer leading to it being demonetized which would also mean RUclips stops promoting the content since it can’t make money. In order to keep it monetized and have the video (hopefully) continue to be pushed to new audiences, I had to chop that segment out so sorry again if it ends up being a little jarring!
There's a reason why "smackdown: here comes the pain" always gets brought up in conversation when you talk about old wwe/wrestling games, this one is just INSANE and packed to the brim with content
Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain is just absolutely amazing. The graphics for its time was jaw dropping and the content gives you hours and hours of replayability. The amount of hours I put into the game is insane. I never, ever got bored of the game. I moved on but its because I had so many other games to play but man, this game is just amazing.
Thank you Matty, there is no debate that here comes the pain is the greatest Wrestling game of all time. Just a suggestion but I'd love to see a WWF no mercy retrospective
I legit just got my HCTP in the mail from ebay and I'm geeked to play it. I've been playing Shut Your Mouth every once I. A while and smacldown vs raw 04.

It's painful in Fight Forever. The animation of the ref makes it look like they weren't paying attention for the first second or two the pin is initiated.
@@AmandaRogersarock1988 lol yeah, I've noticed it a lot in Fight Forever gameplay videos. It's not a serious major flaw for me... but it's still off-putting
By far the best wrestling game of all time and it isn't even remotely close. No Mercy can be argued as the best but HCTP eclipses it by a fair margin imo.
I'd play Smackdown Shut Your Mouth over Here Comes The Pain any day. I remember one of the issues i had with HCTP was wrestlers wouldn't stay laid out on the mat long enough to hit top rope finishers like Benoit's diving headbutt. They got up too fast, and that is still kind of an issue in modern games like 2k23 which makes 6 man tornado ladder matches a nightmare.
Wrestling fans in general and, in this case, AEW fans are very, let's just say.. passionate. That game rightfully deserved all the criticism you gave. People are too consumed with fanboying instead of asking for a better product.
@KeroTheGoat It's not just AEW fans. WWE fans defend a bunch of WWE nonsense all the time. Fans also tend to be more forgiving of games they grew up with too. HCTP is a fantastic game, but it had plenty of glitchy and janky gameplay moments, moments of clipping, annoying loading times. You can easily cheese the AI back then too, fights can finish super quick, etc. We turn a blind eye to those flaws because it a lot of us grew up with it and it was a key part of our youth. AEW FF is significant because it finally brought back a very robust and strong wrestling engine to a modern era. Something that 2K wrestling games have lacked for way too many years, that in itself is a huge accomplishment. Obviously, I do want the AEW game to get long term DLC support though.
@@AztecUnshaven I played HCTP a lot... and I completely agree! One could make the exact same assessment for No Mercy as well. That game is pretty good but it has a lot of issues and is being held on a pedestal because a lot of people are looking at it with rose tinted glasses. Let's hope this game becomes very good with updates. More competition for the WWE the better.
@@AztecUnshaven none of those things are as bad as simply having a lack of content and bad modes, like every modern WWE game and the AEW game. AEW FF is just as janky as an N64 wrestling game. full of clipping, bad loading times, janky gameplay, easily cheesed AI, the fastest match times in the entire genre. it's literally all there, except the game has no content and horrible game modes. modern wwe games aren't even good but it is a FAR more robust and better functioning wrestling system than AEW and it's not even remotely close. AEW isn't even robust. it's ridiculously simple and lame and lacks any depth or options or flexibility.

You're right about Fight Forever & Here Comes the Pain. One of my biggest disappointments & one of my favourite games to go back to. I'd love to see you cover Day of Reckoning 1 & 2 for the Gamecube & Raw 2 for the X-Box (you can skip Raw 1 lol). The DoR games are light on content, but have my favourite gameplay in any wrestling game. Raw 2 is super flawed but is one of the most unique WWE games out there. Also WWE Crush Hour because that's just Twisted Metal with WWE Wrestlers.
@@AztecUnshaven It's similar of course, both games take the Aki formula, but DoR gameplay-wise has a lot of improvements that aren't present in Fight Forever. For example, in the DoR games you can't actual interrupt move animations during multi-man matches, which I was baffled you couldn't in Fight Forever. There's also a more pronounced limb damage system (which Matty would like I think judging by this video [though DoR still has momentum system), and with 2 a more in depth submission system & stamina system. Beyond that, there's more match-types (multi-man last man standing matches being my favourite), and both games have a much better story mode then what Fight Forever has to offer. I think HCTP's story mode is much better than either admittedly, but it'd be cool to see him cover them anyway.
It looks so much better because of the little details, the Jericho kick, rvds hop, brocks clothesline are all unique, now 2k gives everyone the same moves
All I have to say is IF THQ made it to the present and somehow still had a hand in development of WWE games, with todays graphics??? It would’ve been golden. The freedom they gave in their wrestling games is what really immersed me playing hours on end as a kid, getting caught playing past midnight on school nights lol. Made the best memories of my life.
If you ever cover Smackdown VS Raw series you should give a shoutout to the PSP versions which are legitimate ports of the ps2 games and amazing for the time
Thanks for covering this gem of a game from my childhood, Matty. Without a doubt the best wrestling game ever released. I share some mental synchronicities with you, too: Hating Lesnar as a child, and realizing as an adult and a fan that still occasionally tunes in, just how awesome he actually is. If Rey’s your favorite, I’m wondering if you saw Lesnar put him in the “Brock Lock” submission on an episode of Smackdown, back in the day. That made my soul leave my body, dude. Haha
The AEW game is really more like WCW/nWo World Tour on the N64. HCTP is the fifth game in the smackdown series. While I am mostly disappointed in the creation suites in AEW FF, the game itself feels great, is great multi-player fun, and a tremendous place to start if we can get more content added to this with continued support or a sequel.
It’s definitely bare bones but damn is the gameplay is so addicting. The moves hit the way they should. It’s what 2k is missing. Aew got the core gameplay down. Now they just have to build around it and I have faith they will
@@Gamingistherapyforme😂😂 Still defending the piece of crap. Yes of course only 4 player modes, joke of a creation suite (even SVR '06 was better) and that was before 18 years, bug fests, Jeez. You all cribbed about WWE 2k20 but FF is not even 1/10th compared to that game.
Rey is still going strong and fighting his son Dom 😂I love it! I’m a long time wrestling fan since a young girl and still tune in and keep up with it. I did try to play some wrestling games but it was frustrating for me because I couldn’t get the characters to move faster lol
I've been playing this the last few days and I'm loving it. Feel like a kid again blazing through to WM in season. The ultimate edition mod(beta) makes the game a bit fresh too, the biggest addition being Jeff Hardy.
I am also a massive AEW fan, I flew to Toronto to see Forbidden Door a few weeks ago and it was honestly one of the best live experiences I’ve ever had. In saying that, the hate you’re getting for not liking Fight Forever, pay no attention to it, the game is bad, like it’s really not good, hopefully in time it’ll be good but right now, it ain’t it. And that’s from a 33 year old who grew up absolutely loving games like No Mercy and the other AKI games, I think Here Comes The Pain is peak but those N64 games are special. But don’t let the haters get to you on Fight Forever, I share your opinion 🤘
Real ones know the hardest match in season mode was the fatal four-way ladder match as either the U.S. Champion or Intercontinental Champion. The only equivalent is the triple threat cage match on Smackdown vs Raw.
One cool thing I did was basically turned Smackdown into an entire Cruiserweight-built roster show. Most of the roster was Cruiserweight CAWs and Billy Kidman was the WWE champion the 6 man tag matches were fun to play
Best wrestling game of all time. The biggest problem is that Jeff Hardy was not in it. They had his model created and all his moves, etc but took him out last minute when he got fired.
Best wrestling game ever. The ability to customize rosters and factions was awesome. Making my own faction and taking over in season was one of my favorite playthroughs in any game ever. This makes me miss my PS2. A remaster will probably never happen because it would flat out murder the recent WwE games in sales. The smart thing would be for next game to copy exactly all the mechanics, game modes etc; then use modern graphics and roster. But Vince 👀☠️

Also wanted to give a shout-out to WWF: Attitude and ECW: Hardcore Revolution. I consider these games The Room movie of their respective field, in that they’re so terrible, they’re amazing haha. Terrible graphics, hilarious VO, ridiculous, Fatality-like inputs to register finishers and even standard moves, and the sounds of cracking a microphone/baseball bat/ring bell over your opponents head and watching them bleed endlessly was always hilarious. Quick shoutout to WWE: All Stars, too. That game’s underrated as a wrestling game.
damn you did yourself such a disservice not playing this when you were younger due to not liking lesner lmaoo playing this game as a teenager with my friends is still vivid in my brain. I wish I could go back just to experience those great times. However glad you finally played it
Its unfortunate that you got backlash over your opinion on FF, but those hardcore fans like to turn a blind eye to facts. Anyways, glad you covered this gem, I think next you should do some of the SvR games.
Also I’d love a revisit of any of the following: No Mercy, Day of Reckoning, Smackdown vs. Raw 2008, and the modern GOAT that you and I both love: WWE ‘13
This is in like my top 3 games of all time. There's so much to do, everything works, the addition of fighting stances and the high impact of the moves gives the gameplay a lot of character, there are so many environmental things to interact with, the create-a-wrestler is pretty alright, etc. It's such a deep game for being 20 years old. Modern wrestling games just don't have this level of depth, especially Fight Forever. There are fun aspects of FF, but there are also awful aspects. I haven't played it much. The Stadium Stampede looks like fun, but they really need to make this game fully cross platform because the PC community probably couldn't fill a full 30 player game.
I think that "Here comes the pain" is a masterpiece, for all of things: video graphics, gameplay, choice of characters (an incredible lot of choices!). To be released in 2003 for me this game is avant-garde
Oh helllll yeaaaaa. I just picked this up again and still awesome. You should just keep going forward with the releases. They were great up through WWE13.
You can emulate it on Xbox Series X/S. I have gameplay on my channel, check it out, and subscribe. And as far as ESPN Football games gameplay wise ESPN Football ( 2K4 ) is better
AEW Fight Forever has a lot of promise as far as gameplay goes, but the rest of the game is extremely lacking. Which is preposterous to me considering that both HCTP and No Mercy are 20 years old, yet they have vastly more options when it comes to the creation suite, match types and season mode. People keep bringing up how the game will get better with time, but the problem is that in its current state it can't even compete or nearly close to this game. It feels like marketing it as an arcade game was a poor excuse to justify how incomplete it is as an overall package.
This was epic. Some other wrestling games you should definitely cover are wwe all stars, backyard wrestling, and def jam vendetta. Those are some of my favorites and have that arcade feel to them.
One of my favorite wrestling videogames of all time. WWE Smackdown! Here Comes the Pain came out from 20 years ago back in October 27, 2003 on the PlayStation 2 console system. The very last Smackdown game in the series before THQ and Yuke's Media Future Creators made WWE Smackdown! Vs. Raw in November 2, 2004.
God I loved this game so much as a kid. My brother and I would mostly just play royale rumble and team up against the AI until it was just us 2 for the finale. Good times wish I could go back just for a day.
Best of the Smackdown series for me. Only one that stands next to it is Def Jam Fight for New York which is a mixture of Fighting styles with wrestling.
No mercy allowed you to target body parts too. I played both No Mercy and HCTP when I was a preteen and wasted plenty of hours playing them. HCTP is fun and arcade-y but No Mercy always was the better game in terms of game play. The smackdown series was always trying to play catch-up to the N64 wrestling games. The thing that made a huge difference was when the PS2 came out. Everyone abandoned nintendo and so the smackdown series was able to thrive. When I switched from No Mercy to the PS2's Just Bring It, I felt like I was cheated. Shut Your Mouth was a step in the right direction but HCTP was the 1st game I felt like was on par with No Mercy.
Definitely one of the best wrestling games ever made. Great video. As for other games? Need to do the GameCube trilogy. Wrestlemania XIX, Day of Reckoning 1 and 2. (Don't bother with Wrestlemania X8, plz) I'd also recommend Retromania Wrestling, Wrestling Empire, and Fire Pro Wrestling World if you wanna get away from the WWE stuff.
2k needs to look back at the old wrestling games here comes the pain is my favorite one but games like Smackdown vs Raw 2006 and 2007 are my personal favorites too also they need to add inferno match, create a finisher and 3 stages of hell match too in WWE 2k23
I love this game, season mode was so fun , I remember it so well I worked so hard to win the royal rumble to get shot at Brock Lesnar championship, In the storyline that lead up to match I got to choose what type of match it would be , last man standing, submission, or cage match. . I choose the last man standing and proceed to have one of the toughest wrestling game match I ever had now or sense. Brock was like the final boss, I hit him no less that 7 finishers to keep him down. My wrestler finisher, I use his own finisher on him. He keep getting up. I hit by his few times , each time I I thought I lose. It was least ,30 minutes of real time trying to beat him. It long , it was tough and it was fun as hell. I was able to win and felt great. No other wrestling game has given me that type of experience since. It such a great game and great memories
I forgot just HOW OP LESNAR WAS IN THIS DAMN GAME. I hit em with like 5 CONSECUTIVE VanDaminators when i picked HCTP back up, and he just 👉👉WOULD NOT👈👈 GET INJURED. I was legit shooketh 😐
Best wrestling game of all time. Another one you should check out is the game that came before it. Smackdown Shut Your Mouth. Season mode in that is good too. Was hoping AEW FF was going to be like these games.

What a game!
Talk about nostalgia….
Fantastic video. Something I should delve into myself..
I think that "Here comes the pain" is a masterpiece, for all of things: video graphics, gameplay, choice of characters (an incredible lot of choices!).
To be released in 2003 for me this game is avant-garde
dude i’ve been replaying the SvR games lately, this is perfect timing
2002-2007 was the golden era of wrestling games imo
You should do a retrospective of the Def Jam Series, maybe a vid for Vendetta, FFNY, and FFNY: The Takeover?
Real ones will know that this was actually the Thursday night era. The SmackDown Five era.
I would love to see you do a video on smackdown vs raw 06
Oh helllll yeaaaaa. I just picked this up again and still awesome. You should just keep going forward with the releases. They were great up through WWE13.
Absolute classic wrestling game ❤
That seem like the "ESPN NFL 2K5" game of wrestling games!!
You can emulate it on Xbox Series X/S. I have gameplay on my channel, check it out, and subscribe. And as far as ESPN Football games gameplay wise ESPN Football ( 2K4 ) is better
I think the Legends in this game are awesome. George Steele, Hillbilly Jim, Jimmy Snuka, Iron Sheik, and more.
Honestly, you should play the MDickie game “Wrestling Empire”
It’s so crazy and nuts, it has a lot for a game made by one person
shocked that there's no one that's really modding these games to have modern wrestlers in it
There are mods for it to do exactly that. Just search here comes the pain mods
I never owned an N64 and played sparingly at my friends house . This was my no mercy
So tired of hearing people defend the release of unfinished games.
This was epic. Some other wrestling games you should definitely cover are wwe all stars, backyard wrestling, and def jam vendetta. Those are some of my favorites and have that arcade feel to them.
Smackdown VS Raw 06/07 were the absolute best
Pretty amazing how well the graphics age, this came out 20 years ago!
I still believe that nobody can defeat me in this game even though I left playing it in 2011.
Im 36 here comes the pain was the greatest wrestling game ever maid after no mercy.if you haven't played wwf no mercy try it out its probably greater
man oh man, smackdown vs raw 2006 on psp, & 2007 on 360 were pure gems.
5:26 Classic coordination right there 😂😂
Jeff Hardy's full Moveset was available in the game you just had to buy it from the in game shop
There's a potential for a remake from a tweet from Brian Williams that works at 2K
Smack down 2 and here comes the pain...goated
This game was 🔥
THIS WAS AN AMAZING GAME I REMEMBER PLAYING THIS AT 11 YEARS OLD
Ah yes, truly the champagne of wrestling games
I was hoping for this string of wrestling games for this channel
God I loved this game so much as a kid. My brother and I would mostly just play royale rumble and team up against the AI until it was just us 2 for the finale. Good times wish I could go back just for a day.
Best of the Smackdown series for me. Only one that stands next to it is Def Jam Fight for New York which is a mixture of Fighting styles with wrestling.
I've collected and played almost all of the Smack, Smackdown vs Raw, wwe2k Games but this game is still in my top 5 wrestling games of all time.
(Don't bother with Wrestlemania X8, plz)
I'd also recommend Retromania Wrestling, Wrestling Empire, and Fire Pro Wrestling World if you wanna get away from the WWE stuff.
Remember this game like it was yesterday
2k needs to look back at the old wrestling games here comes the pain is my favorite one but games like Smackdown vs Raw 2006 and 2007 are my personal favorites too also they need to add inferno match, create a finisher and 3 stages of hell match too in WWE 2k23
This is not a game, this is millions emotion❤️❤️
The greatest wrestling game of all time big W also u should try wwe day of reckoning its a classic for gamecube
I forgot just HOW OP LESNAR WAS IN THIS DAMN GAME. I hit em with like 5 CONSECUTIVE VanDaminators when i picked HCTP back up, and he just 👉👉WOULD NOT👈👈 GET INJURED. I was legit shooketh 😐
Yes yes yes - please do more of these!!
It’s crazy this looks better than AEW 2023
Best wrestling game of all time. Another one you should check out is the game that came before it. Smackdown Shut Your Mouth. Season mode in that is good too. Was hoping AEW FF was going to be like these games.
I seriously need to get this game. Never even played it before.
HERE COMES THE PAIN IS THE GOAT !!!!!!!
