    Please sit back and enjoy the ride accompanied by an informative commentary delivered with typical Australian humour by our driver/guides Will and Hamish. An alternative version of this trip for people who prefer an uninterrupted experience without commentary using video footage from an external camera will be available shortly.
    Passengers returned to their seats on the train having looked around the “Tobacco Display” and souvenir shop at Dimbulah station where tasty snacks and drinks were provided by the “Dimbulah Historical Society”.
    Over the next two hours we pass through an ever changing landscape featuring lush farmlands, small towns, fruit trees, native forest and grasslands. As we pass through Mareeba our driver/guide describes how the town was once a major rail hub where trains were re-marshalled, loaded and unloaded in substantial sidings that have all but disappeared today. We get our first sight of the Barron River shortly after Biboohra, crossing it on a substantial, multi span steel bridge, next we run along the edge of Bilwon State Forest. The rain forest closes in on the tracks as we squeeze next to the Barron River between Formartine State Forest and Kuranda State Forest, crossing a succession of Barron River tributaries. Our train slows down as we pass a turntable and the attractive Kuranda station comes into view, decorated with hanging baskets and pretty flower beds.
    Here is a little information about the train, mostly courtesy of Wikipedia -
    The service was introduced on 3 April 1995 by Queensland Rail to replace the Forsayth Mixed (marketed as the 'Last Great Train Ride'). The line was closed from Mareeba to Mount Surprise at the same time. It was initially run with a 2000 class railmotor set that was refurbished at Townsville Workshops. Initially this service only ran on the Mount Surprise to Forsayth section of the Etheridge line. However, after an upgrade of the line for sugar syrup trains from Cairns to Arriga, and a limited restoration of the rest of the line, the railmotor started travelling from Cairns to Forsayth in September 1998. In 2004 it was decided to put the running of the train out to tender and the winning bid was submitted by “Cairns Kuranda Steam Pty Ltd”. Please listen to the commentary to hear more about “Cairns Kuranda Steam” and how it came to be running the Savannahlander.

    Kuranda station looking its usual green self! First time I was there was in 1960 on a youth tour and it looked the same then. Station Masters there must be chosen for their green thumbs!
    Thanks, Tim. Looking forward to the last leg down the mountain.

      I've visited Kuranda station twice previous to this visit and it always looks good, a nice place to enjoy something from the cafe, if there are no train movements the signaller is happy to show people around the signal box and the village is made up of a fascinating collection of gift, indigenous craft shops and cafes. There is also a small zoo and if you take a walk down to the lake, it's well worth joining a cruise with commentary about the wildlife. I bet its changed a bit since your 1960 visit. I'm currently working on the next leg of this journey down to Cairns, Wow it looks even more awesome from the cab than it does from the passenger seat.

      We’re not there yet Neil, we've got one last leg to Cairns, probably the most spectacular stretch of railway line to be found anywhere in Australia.

      It must be a logistical nightmare to get new rails to where they are needed and to remove the worn out rails.

    The War and Peace of Australian train travel.?
    What an epic.... and the commentary and passenger conversations, superb!

      Hi, I love the comparison with Leo Tolstoy's "War and Peace" a literary work, recognised as one of the longest ever written. I'm glad you are enjoying this epic journey, particularly the commentary and passenger conversations. Just one leg to go now before we reach journeys end at Cairns over what many describe as Australia’s most scenic stretch of railway as we descend from the Tablelands down to the coast.

    Thanks Tim, We have finally reached civilisation 😁,I had no idea the scale of irrigation on the tablelands and i think i spotted some mango🥭 trees the best time to eat them is when your having a bath🛁🤣have you tried them? cheers Bob.🦘🐨🥭🍊🍌🍍🍎🍐🍑

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  7 месяцев назад

      Hello Robert, the history here is fascinating, mining and the tobacco industry led to the development we see in this video, although mining is no longer a major industry and Tabaco growing has been replaced by fruit farming. It was those original industries that led to the railway being built and a little later to the construction of the irrigation system to increase the yield from tobacco farming, today the railway hosts a weekly tourist train and the irrigation system feeds fruit trees and general agriculture. I've never eaten a mango in the bath, maybe I should have bought one to take back to my hotel although I don't think standing in a shower is quite the same experience 🥴 . Enjoy the rest of your weekend, Cheers from a cold and wet UK 🌨☔.
