  • Everybody hates notifications, but why? In this episode of Processor, Dieter Bohn examines what Apple and Google are doing to manage them on iPhone and Android - and why Android's notifications are more humane. Subscribe: goo.gl/G5RXGs
    Processor is a weekly RUclips show that takes a deeper look at how consumer technology is changing and how we should think about our gadgets as people, not just as users.

    Actually, your 50 options is wrong. You ended up with 48 options with notifications on, so there's only one more to add: notifications off. It's actually 49, not 50.

      teyzfootball Thank you! I was starting to get upset with the whole "notifications are better on STOCK Android" thing. All Android phones (except for the mentioned Chinese ones) handle notifications exactly the same. Also, notifications haven't really changed that much on Android since 6.0, so if you have an older Android phone that doesn't receive timely updates your notifications are still handled better than the latest iPhone.

    • @bionicsheep7131
      @bionicsheep7131 6 лет назад +13

      Incorrect, it assumes that all the bottom options matter when the notification toggle is off. When the toggle is off, all the others are gone, so you can't consider their permutations as options

      What's the point of having a phone? To get alerted when something happens. So instead of buying a smart phone and having it on mute which completely defeats the purpose. How about just buy a cheap little track or minute phone so you can call and text and only get the important notifications.

    You don't pinch to expand grouped notifications on Android! You can do it with one finger. Please do full research before making and posting a video. An iPhone user would look at that and just dismiss that saying I don't want to use two fingers just to expand notifications, that is horrible UX!

    I strongly hope iOS someday includes a deeper system for notifications like that new Android system does. Some sort of customizable priority isn’t a bad thing by any standards, and I’d find it deeply helpful to have it set so only certain things come up in an app rather than them all, like having RUclips only notify me when one of my relatively few subscribed channels uploads a video rather than both that and notifying me when someone likes a comment I posted. Just seems like such excess.

  • @fightnight14

    Lol. Not gonna say iPhone notifications are perfect, cause it would be damn awesome if I could just group them, but other than that, I don’t really have any complaints. I’ve learned to turn off Twitter, Instagram, even RUclips, cause whatever happens that they wanna notify me about really doesn’t matter to me if I haven’t opened the app myself and actually set aside time for whatever it is.
    I don’t need to know the minute something is posted, just when I receive a personal message. Other than that, I’ll get to it when I get to it.

    I switched to iPhone recently and love how it handles notifications. The settings on how to see/hear them are superior to android and I am able to make all the apps individually alert me by: nothing, vibrate, tone only, and iMessage is the only one with banners. I also like that iPhone doesn’t clutter up your status bar with all kinds of notifications. The pass through philosophy significantly reduces notification anxiety/fatigue. It’s WONDERFUL.

    I hate iOS notifications. I just jumped from the s8 and went to the iPhone 8 plus just to see how Apple is now. Haven't had one since iPhone 5. They need to at least bundle notifications. It's funny how hardcore Apple fans say iOS is so simple.

    I like how Android tries to organize notifications in a sensible manner, and I really appreciate it after learning that Apple just naively dumps them in a chronological list. But I do find annoyances with the notification system of Android. Sometimes the prioritising and reprioritizing of notifications happen multiple times when I'm actively looking at the notifications, so I would annoyingly see the notifications getting shuffled around (even if there aren't any new notifications) while I'm looking at them. The worst part is when I try to open or dismiss a notification, and just milliseconds before my finger hits the screen, Android shuffles the deck and another notification takes its spot, getting opened or dismissed without my actual desire to do so. And your analogy to email makes a lot of sense. Notifications are treated as these disposable single-use entities, and they shouldn't be. They should be permanently stored somewhere, just like emails, where you can delete them, clear trash, organize, archive, and search old data, just like you do in email. There's no core function or third party app that reliably provides that functionality, and I want that. There are several times I accidentally dismissed a notification and wished for an archive of dismissed notifications that I can find it in. Or a notification from the past I'd want to recall.

      That is actually the key problem with iOS notifications. They removed grouping since iOS 9 or smth and since then its the worst garbage. One app spams your notifications and you can‘t quickly check your notifications while swiftly deleting the useless once from certain apps all at once, its so cluttered. I found myself going into settings to disable notifications from apps that spammed me and reenable them after I cleared my others so I can delete them all.

      This is exactly why I have my iPhone X jailbroken.
      A tweak called InteliX does this, found here : repo.packix.com/package/com.ioscreatix.intelix/
      Add to that the tweak Colorbanners 2 and all your notifications are coloured to that of the app icon, found here : cydia.saurik.com/package/com.golddavid.colorbanners2/
      This combination is exactly what Apple needs to implement in the next iOS version.

      Martin why not putting a different vibration pattern in the phone itself or a notification led that it's so useful? It seems that you need to buy the whole "Ecosystem" so each individual product works well

      Alan Silva because a watch is on my person at all times. I never feel my phone vibrate unless it’s in my hand.

    • @alanbio
      @alanbio 6 лет назад

      Martin I think this is really nice! But if I don't like watches I'm faded to a messy and confused notifications page! Not even start to comment on widget page, in which you always need to click and open the actual app to get the real important information that should be right there.
      I'm really trying to give a chance to iOS but my Android keeps telling me how really productive the system is, while the iPhone is just for social apps and media

      Diego Munhóz It's not the Android update policy. It's the OEMs update policy. Stock Android and some OEMs get updates right. If you stick to them, your android is just as secure and up-to-date as any iPhone.

    In regards to Notification Channels, you do rely on the app developer somewhat. They aren't required to add these at all unless they increase their targetSdk to the version where this was added, and even then, they only need to add one massive bucket channel. Luckily, developers don't want users to take the nuclear option (as you astutely pointed to), so they have some incentive to create many channels.

    Hello! Is there a way to allow the text messenger sound notifications to go through "do not disturb" mode along with favorite contacts calls? For example, you do not want all the calls to disturb you, but you want to be notified when your favorite contact is calling and when he sends you a message. I know how to manage the calls, but not the message sound notification. I can't find the message option in the "do not disturb" settings. Thank you for your videos!

    One new thing I noticed on Android P DP1 is Google often puts a red DND icon on some of the notifications. If you click the icon it says that "You usually dismiss these notifications. Keep showing them?" Here you have the option to Keep Showing or stop the notification.
    This is something that starts coming up after you use it for a few days. I think Google has already started using machine learning for notification like you said.
