Thanks I took my car to mechanic after seeing this I've just paid over $2000 to have a new timing chain and tensioner and new sparkplugs on my little Toyota let's hope it's more reliable now
It sounded the same as yours but mine was abit louder
Car cost me $1800 so Ive spent more on it that what the car cost. I got it cheap though it's newer than this one

In the 1zz fe engine. If the chain tensioner fails and chain skips and it won't start. How likely is major damage to the engine?

I was thinking I'd try replacing the chain tensioner, readjust timing and see if it can at least start. I was quoted 800 just to remove head and check for damage, but it has 280k miles on it.
