Keep in mind the base game and mvm are 2 different worlds. So different that it can honestly feel like a different video game. There are so many weapons that suck ass in the base game but amazing in mvm. Such as the brass beast, phlog, gas passer, the fan o war and shortstop. While there are weapons that are meta in the base game but horrible in mvm such as the degreaser, Tomi, wrap assassin, stock shotgun, pistols etc

I feel people seem to forget that Heavy’s minigun unlocks are more niche than other class sidegrades, like there’s situations where they work and others where they really aren’t, the perfect example of a side grade. As someone who mains the Brass Beast, hearing your discussion of it here is really nice. I totally agree that the brass beast makes you play it instead of playing heavy, and that’s what I like. I almost always play the heavy tank characters in games (Orisa, DRG gunner, paladin’s Raum, etc). And because of that, I very often play off-tank. If I’m the only heavy on the team, I’m not pulling out the bb. But if there’s another heavy (who actually knows what they’re doing), I’m switching straight to it. Plus, it forced me to actually understand the positioning and anticipation aspects of Heavy, as well as the power and importance of jump or drop reving.

  • @rockowlgamer631
    @rockowlgamer631 5 месяцев назад +50

Plus the nicest thing about the Huo Long Heater is that Demoknights hate you, since they have to get close they will catch on fire. Unless the demoknight can jump over each fire ring, he will die quickly.
Though it would be nice if Heavy got other "heavy" weapons, like an artillery cannon or something.

    • @bonkbonk420
      @bonkbonk420 5 месяцев назад +14

Demoknights usually avoid heavy unless they can force the hand of the heavy by doing the max charge full crit combo or having multiple heads with the eyelander. Its generally a bad matchup unless you know the heavy is hurt because no one is outdamaging a heavy in melee range

    • @ironencepersonal9634

Demoknight can oneshot Heavy with a max charge combo with the splendid screen and the skullcutter. Even against Huo heavies, if you can find an angle to charge them while they aren't looking at you. I've done it a bunch myself, and there usually isn't a whole lot that can go wrong if you time it right.

I'm not disagreeing with your ranking of the brass beast, but I do follow your "ideal role" for heavy in casual with the brass beast. My main loadout as heavy is brass beast, banan, and the GRU. The other 2 weapons make the playstyle, the brass beast just variates the playstyle because I dislike the tomislav. I just prefer more damage, even if it isn't that much.

I do support the brass best but I will admit that it's biggest use case is against other over aggressive heavies. If you need to play heavy and are okay sacrificing your ability to engage for being able to guarantee you win a 1v1 against another heavy who jump revs into you it can be worth while.
However, again, it's best use case where it's better then stock in a significant way is in a heavy 1v1s. Even if they have a medic and you don't. (With or with out dolokos.) You still normally win if they jump rev into you. Your presence forces their medic to pop uber if their heavy is happy to jump rev into you. It's other best use case is as a fringe counter to quick fix and vacationer ubers when you still need to be a heavy and can sacrifice mobility to insure you're not rolled by those things.
Turns out brass beast doesn't really care about the damage resistance from the vac unless it's a heavy 1v1 and if you have a medic you 1v1 a phlog with a vac or quickfix uber with out needing to pop your own uber. If your aim is good enough.
Other then exactly those situations it performs worse over all.
In closing, brass beast is incredibly situational where it out performs stock, but sometimes it's worth the sacrifice to counter those things.

The reason I use the Brass Beast is to be the clear anchor of the team. The shotgun is there for when I’m ambushed or moving, and I make sure I preemptively rev it before I go around a corner. Sure, the “Mobile Sentry” playstyle can work, but the better feeling is getting an ambush on a team by rushing in with the Brass Beast. That feeling of making it into the front lines, and being that massive anchor. It also deals a lot of damage at even medium range, and while the Tomislav is certainly more adept at handling mid-range targets, the Brass Beast can keep up with the Tomislav at that range thanks to the damage bonus.
I can never get enough of running the Brass Beast on offense. Moving up into a position, revving, unloading into a few enemies, and trying to still be mobile is a great and rewarding challenge. The only issue is the slow unrev that is universal across all miniguns, as it makes repositioning a lot harder.

To comment on the strafe-spam counter of the Natascha, I think it’s theoretically possible, but doesn’t happen for two main reasons.
1 - when facing a heavy, holding W and spamming strafe keys doesn’t do much for you. Maybe it allows you to run away unimpeded, but generally if you’re caught in the effective range of the Natascha that tech isn’t going to get you out of it.
2 - I have a suspicion that the strafe spam is less effective vs the Natascha vs other slows. Because the Natascha resets your movement speed with every single tick of damage, instead of being a continuous effect. Resulting in the strafe spam essentially just accelerating you quicker between ticks of damage, but not avoiding the slow all together.

I honestly think the stock minigun is better than the tomislav in casual for one simple reason: Heavy is not a duelist. When I jump rev around a corner with 450 HP, I can comfortably take out 3, maybe even 4 or 5 people at once, simply because even the bullets I “miss“ still hit someone else, so while the tomi might have more 1v1 dps at mid to high range, Stock still deals more damage in total.

I usually get people seething and sometimes get kicked if I do it with the Natascha, even though I do feel I get more done with the Brass Beast in my experience. There are just times I pull wins in heavy duels even when I'm not shooting first which makes me like it even more. I think the brass beast would be a bit better if they doubled down on the living sentry idea in a positive way by giving it some kind of knockback resistance. One thing I tend to notice is that knockback from pyros and especially the loose cannon can delay the hell out of the brass beast’s killing potential even more, so it would be cool if it got more resistance to push back damage to reduce annoyance :)

    • @HellecticMojo

no, no more doubling down. Just play Engineer at that point. It needs to deploy at normal speed then you don't have to worry about the killing potential. Turning yourself into a sentry really has no desirable outcome when you don't have the tanking of the wrangler.

The biggest weakness for the Natascha is that you get destroyed by every other minigun. You rev slower and deal less damage, so you’ll get eaten alive by the Tomislav and Stock. The slowdown also doesn’t matter on a reved up Heavy who isn’t moving much to begin with. It’s kind of like a Kaiju movie where you need another giant monster to take out the monster.

The beast gives you high DPS, a higher effective range, and defensive buffs in exchange for lowered mobility. This makes it ideal for defense.

fun fact about tomislav vs stock, Big Joey did tests and Tomislav barely wins a point-blank standoff when both start firing at the same time (As in, going from unrevved to shooting)
This isn't due to stock missing pellets, it's just the faster rev time meaning it JUST manages to hit 300 hp before stock would be able to.

As a Pyro main, My second favorite thing to do in the game is follow a Hulong heater heavy around and burn anyone they are trying to fight. Try and take them down from a distance with projectiles? Nope. Try and 1v1 them? Now your on fire and get burst down so fast you won't even know what's happening. Y'all get priority on ammo packs too cause I know how much it drain's y'all.
Please keep playing Hulong Y'all. Your a rare breed and one I cherish very highly.

It really depends on your playstyle.
Most professional TF2 players tend to play on mobility dependent maps, so favor the Tomi over everything else for that extra mobility boost.
Most casuals will pick a series of maps or game modes to focus on and that will determine their favorite minigun.
As for me, I prefer using the dinner taunt on top of something in the middle of the battlefield, and offering "free" meals to anyone who can impress me.

I like the brass beast, but this is quite true, if it had a full defense boost instead it’d be good, I know the brass beast is bad, but it does teach something else, use a shotgun as heavy, people forget about heavy having one and the amount of times it saves you is insane, definitely better to use a faster spin up, but teaching a heavy it’s okay to not bring a health item is good, it’s okay to use a shotgun over a sandvich, the thought that you must sacrifice your secondary item for an item that’s mostly for a medic and sometimes for you if you’re lucky enough to have the safe time to eat it, the shotgun punishes people who think you have to wait to deal damage, not useful with a tomislav, but I say use the family business with the huo long heater or stock, it’ll get you through more than you’d expect

Why the hell does no one talk about the Dalocah's bar and gloves of running urgently combo?
It's literally broken because it counteract's Heavy's slow movement and then some.
Pair it with any minigun of choice, even the brass beast, and you'll quickly see that having the heavy show up quicker than expected and with more health than average is a really strong combo.
For those that don't know, the chocolate bar instantly restores your drained health from the Gloves of running urgently.
Try it out in game and see what I mean.

    • @HellecticMojo
      @HellecticMojo 5 месяцев назад

Because it's a very selfish combo in a very selfish team comp.
You are running urgently because no one was nice enough to build a teleporter.
You are selfishly refusing sandvich because everyone's too selfish to play medic to give proper overheals.
The bug makes it for a good combo, but it's not a game winning one. It's a combo to whip out when the game is a stomp or when people aren't being a team player.

Big Joey did a test to see whether stock or Tomi has the better dps and it turned out that Tomi had better dps at any distance other than point blank due to the fact you can fire sooner due to the faster rev up speed and the fact it’s more accurate. Honestly I’d say the perks that stock brings over the Tomi are very niche compared to the other way around. If you’re tracking is solid, Tomi is the clear winner as the only thing it’s worse at than stock is heavy 1v1 but again that’s only 1 out of 9 classes and who said you have to face him face to face? Yeah by taking advantage of the silent rev you can easily sneak up on your enemies before they can even react. Not to mention extremely close range exchanges are very uncommon the higher the skill level the lobby is. Oh did I mention the accuracy bonus also means you can reliable deter snipers and that it allows you to secure kills at a safer distance, which is especially helpful considering heavy’s slow speed. So overall the Tomi definitely is the best choice. Stock is perfectly viable and is also meta but Tomi just brings more to the table overall

You very easily explained why the natascha is so hated. It shuts down a huge majority of the skill-based methods for dealing with a heavy. TF2 being such a skill intensive game means the hatred for it will be *VITRIOLIC* since it lowers your own skill floor as well as theirs.

Huo long doesn't have a flat 25% extra damage against burning enemies. It's 15% more, because it still does 10% less damage than stock, that stat doesn't go away just cause someone is burning.

to be honest in my opinion, The Minigun vs Tomislav debate basically dissolves into whether or not you wish to be the brunt of your team
The Tomislav is objectively better for Heavy in every way if he were to be playing solo as it compensates the heavy getting suprised through the rev speed and allows heavy to strafe more with the under appreciated rev walk speed, the tighter spread even compounds this idea as most heavies will not be directly in the enemy team's face because of that effective range increase, it's just perfect for solo heavy play when you're not getting pocketed or unfortunately don't have the best team
which means the minigun is objectively better than the Tomislav when Your team is putting the team in team fortress as the minigun's dps close range shreds anything daring to put a stop to your caring allies that are supplementing you with support through covering or healing you that subsequently allow you to be reving, basically negating the ramp up damage and outputting more dps than you would be with the Tomislav, becoming the anchor of your team, essentially becoming the line your team can push forward, just as long as it's supported

The Hou Lung Heater is easily my favorite Minigun. It's such a creative take on the minigun concept, and I'm a guy who loves to get up close and personal and flank into enemies, and the sheer damage this thing can output at close range is nothing short of brutal. And yes while the ammo consumption is a major drawback, I've played with this gun so much that I have gotten used to it and know how to play around it. And at the end of the day, it's just really fun to use. The Tomislav and Stock may be better, but the Heater is my go-to, I love it so much.

Honestly I feel like you talked up the Huo Long Heater way too much, considering the segment that came before it that capped off with min-maxing not being a good idea in TF2.
1: I don't want to sound mean, but it seems kind of obvious that Heavy does a great job at denying close quarters environments regardless of his gun. Of course you're good on the flank with it, you have a Sandvich or a banana, and you get your ammo back on kill. You just killed them slightly faster which doesn't make a lot of difference 99% of the time.
2: Heavy already deals Monstrous Damage, so do you really need the extra damage? And even then, that's situational. Without a pyro, most engagements take longer since you're not always at point blank range. So the whole discussion about shredding your enemies in seconds in a choke or destroying sentries is just something Heavy already does. You even make this point in the BB section a bit
3: And for my final point, I'm gonna quote LazyPurple "Come to think of it, every class in the game would perform better if their opponents were always turned away doing other things." so saying it performs better in surprises doesn't mean a lot when anything that isn't objectively garbage does so too.
tl;dr: The Heater just makes you even better in a situation you're already solid in, with less severe downsides when compared to the Beast, but still not great downsides to have. Like you said, this isn't an MMO where min-maxing what you're already good at is the ticket to victory. Just didn't make sense to me that you Choke-Slammed the BB like that, but the HHH just gets a slap on the wrist when it has largely the same issues, even if less severe. I don't even find it to be out of position on the list, I just think it was really strange.

The issue with the Tomi vs Stock is that technically, Tomi outdamages stock. Rev time makes the initial fight over way quicker as the Tomi, but if things keep going its stock damage vs Tomi damage lol. Not even close once both are revved up unless you’re too far away, at which the Tomi also outdamages

    • @therapscallion64753

Even so, there's no getting around that a heavy ready to fight vs a heavy not prepared to fight will ultimately be what decides the outcome. Even if the Brass Beast for argument's sake does more damage on paper, if literally any heavy is revved up and ready and you're not, its over and I would say that decides more than what minigun you're going up against.

Just a slight correction: The Huo Long Heater does not deal a flat 25% increase in damage to burning players. The 25% increase and 10% decrease multiply together and the damage increase only comes out to 12.5%, not including the ring of fire damage.

I just wanna comment on Trickle Down balance and how it doesn't work for TF2.
The reason it works in other things is because the difference between casual and competitive in those things (for instance, MTG or Warhammer) is largely just player effort and skill. TF2 the fundamental rules are different. Like, its either 6v6 or 9v9. There may be a 12v12 competitive league, but I've never heard of it and even then, they are on very specific maps in a very specific rotation, it just doesn't work as well for us as it does for other games.
You can still learn things, like how if you drop player numbers the Quick Fix is nuts, or how in low player count KotH the Buffalo Steak is actually really good for getting Heavy to the frontlines without giving up HP, but these things are interesting facts, not things to really help balance the game for casual.
Edit: As for actual video commentary, I do like the Brass Beast and I understand why you don't like it. Going slow takes a lot of getting used to.

The brass beast shaving time off killing every class helps immensely when in casual specifically on payload where you can just stop a 4 player push on your own due to your nutty damage at mid range and damage resistance
Your appraisal of the huo long heater shows you dont get why the brass beast is situationally broken and a very underrated weapon
Also youre just flat out cooked on the natasha ranking its by far the worst minigun unless you specifically want to stop one pesky scout

Imo, the worst heavy primary is the natascha. The damage output is very little in comparison to anything else, and the major upside of slowing people down can be ignored by simply strafing diagonally to ignore the speed loss. Not only that, but its unfun to even fight against for anybody who doesn't know/doesn't use the slow-removing tech. I wish it could be reworked a little into something more fun for the user, the victim, and overall less bugginess.

Ooh, add a stronger accuracy ramp up on the brass beast (maxing out at 15% higher accuracy than it is now at full rev ramp up), and speed up the derev time by a lot so that heavy can reposition easier and make the gun feel more like a choice between positioning and spammability

    • @Mixxium

In my mind, the brass beast becomes the slowest to rev up, but just as fast as the tomislav to rev down, but not quite as accurate as the tomislav at any point due to rev ramping theoretically applying evenly
