Youre one of my fav watch channels because unlike other channels you stick to the low/mid range stuff. Almost every watch channel starts out like you then once they become educated they graduate to Rolex etc and never go back because those brands are "beneath" them.
Totally agree. I'm very aware of the law of diminishing returns, and everybody has a sweet spot. I bought a 1997 Mazda Miata for $6000, so it would take a lot of convincing that a watch could be as good as that!
Sticky/friction ball caseback opener for this one. For the record, they open pretty much any screw-on caseback : ) Definitely some Zelos DNA in this one!
I try to use my sticky ball for everything but if the case has been screwed back tightly with a proper metal caseback tool then the ball has its limitations.
The problem with sticky balls is they work when they work but don't when they don't. The caseback scallop is similar to the new Seamaster casebacks but I doubt a Seamster die will fit it due to size differences but maybe they do.
@@whoknew837 if you try long enough they always work, some case backs come out easier than others but if you don't give up it will eventually come off.
Jody, now you are a watch review superstar with deep connections, you should get a bunch of microbrand divers and put them through a monstrous pressure testing machine to see if they really do hold up to the water resistances they claim.
great review. i got my proteus yesterday and im in love with my blue dial version ! such value for money and i really dont mind the nh35 movement as i change watches daily
I love this watch. I bought a blue one and a black one ($254 each). I like the design and the case shape. It wears nicely on smaller wrists (6.5") because the lugs slant down dramatically and gives the watch a squarish appearance. I never use my bracelets because I like to swap out NATO or bands on my watches. The round date window matches the round pip outline on the bezel. A lot of watches have round markers and a square date window. Why is that ok? There are only so many combinations of bezels, markers and hands to go around. I like the script also. The great wall model is a nice original design by Phoibos. Why is it still available then? Without affordable watches our hobby will die. More expensive watches get a pass much too often by some. That's why I admire your channel. You always play it straight no matter how much the watch costs. 😊
I really like this watch. My Phoibos PY007C is fantastic and purchasing from Phoibos was a breeze. I can see another octopus watch in my future once we have conquered the viral invasion.
Good honest review. I’ve tried two Phoibos watches but been disappointed. The Eagle ray quartz gmt had misaligned hands and the PY001 had metal swarf under the bezel. Meanwhile my Vostok has settled down to between -1 and -4 second per day and has killed any notion of buying any other budget diver.
Once you have a Vostok, you question why you would need anything else. Except for the lume. Well, I say the same about Casios too. But seriously, they have ruined me for any other mechanicals. Tough, elegant engineering, and more consistent timing than most Seikos. In fact, I could be happy with a 3 watch collection of a Vostok 420***, a Casio WS-200H, and a Timex 49851. And you could buy all three for less than the cost of the Phoibos! For a long time watch collector, that's a very strange thing to realise.
True I guess! I got the Proteus and it is nice - had to sand the Bracelet inner edge to make it wearable but I can live with that. Anyways I still Love my "cheap" Amphibia more... And I might get one more in the future... That says something!
It is not because of Phoibos, but because of swiss Ronda 515-24h, you could buy 5000$ watch and had misaligned hands (on my GMT seond hand is not hitting the target).
Jody use a rubber ball to open the case back, found on Amazon or eBay for $3.00. Or .. super glue a socket on the back and allow to dry, then apply pressure downward when unscrewing the case back. When finished reattach the case back and simply apply sideways pressure to the socket. I would love them to do a skindiver like a vintage Belforte or Gruen.
That case back is Omega Seamaster style and you can get special 5 pronged (non-adjustable) tools to remove them but I believe a three prong and some care will do it.
Hey Jody, did you see that the new model launched yesterday? The Voyager, a Yachtmaster homage to change things up. I've got a blue one on the way, and your reviews of the brand tipped the scales to make it happen. Can't wait!
If you are after the back catalogue, eBay used and new phoibus watches are available, expect to pay about £100 for a quartz and £200 for a automatic I liked this new design
Great review. 100% agree. Jody is keeping it real. This is my first Phoibos and I like it for all the pros mentioned. The dial is a subjective thing but I happen to like it. And there’s certainly room for improvements. Sharp clasp and bracelet. Some alignment issues with the case and bracelet because of the ambitious design. Phoibos will make you a loyalist though by branding the King Octopus on your wrist from the case back after some time on your wrist.
Good shape and so glad they didn't make the spiral edges sharp. Also the raised logo is probably cast in, instead of a boring bit of (recessed) laser engraving.
I believe I saw this model, in a different dial colour, on another watch channel. It still looks like a fantastic watch that I would wear everyday. Good review 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Jodys reputation is much more important than the sponsors' money. Always try to support Jody through affiliate links unfortunately, I can't support him through the patron.
I own two of their watches, the Eagle Ray and the PY007B. They both are nice watches with plenty of bang for the buck. I was all set to buy this one in the blue version but seeing the one you reviewed in detail has made me stop and think about it. I agree with the font, seconds hand and the date window issues, they just don’t fit but not necessarily deal breakers. I do enjoy your open and honest reviews. Thanks
Most of the items like the red Automatic and 300m I like, along with the lightning bolt hand. I don't plan on removing case back so that's not a problem since I worry about compromising the watch water resistance. I love the crown. I just might have to get one of these
Love all the styling on this model. Bold design and I think it really works. Only issue i have is the bracelet is somewhat sharp. For $300 ish it's still a very good buy.
The small circular date window at 3 is the reason I did not even consider this one. The Milgauss second hand didn't help the design in my opinion either. Otherwise appears like a nice piece.
Nice to know that a "free" watch doesn't alter your objectivity. You're absolutely correct about Phoibos, which is almost always out-of-stock. They should consider restocking some of their best sellers, like the Eagle Ray GMT that was quartz, and a superb value rather than adding still another dive watch with an external bezel. Here's a suggestion, why not take deposit orders on best-sellers out-of-stock to fund the build? You're equally correct that the $299 automatic diver price point is getting very crowded. There are also too many oversize watches. For $299 I'd buy the new LongIslandWatch new 38mm divers. Isn't the iconic Rolex Submariner they all copy 40mm?
Case back is very similar to Omega Seamaster, even their exhibition case back has that scalloped edge style. I guess there is a tool to fit that if a brand like Omega does it ? But clearly the cost difference makes the Phiobos a winner for most of us !
I bought this same watch immediately after gettin the E-mail and I adored it until I noticed the slightly misaligned bezel. Sent it back 3-ish weeks ago and I’ll be waiting many more weeks until it arrived from Hong Kong
I really think Phoibos have knocked it out of the park with this. It’s original, well specked, and outstanding value for money. Oh , and it’s gorgeous. Makes a Samurai, look a bit clumsy. If you don’t like it Jody, I’ll be pleased to pay the postage, and throw in a tee shirt.

For the first 4-5 days after lauch the Proteus was 15% discount, so I bought one last week. I'll update if the strap and case have sharp edges. I am reserving judgement on the date window and second hand, but at $255 the Proteus was a simple choice. Edit: So, I have had the watch for a week and it's really pretty. No problem with the date window. The dial is very legible and has excellent lume, and the milgauss seconds hand is cool. There are some significant issues with the watchband - the end links are loose and show a messy gap close to the bezel, and the clasp is stiff as blazes (careful of your fingernails). The band itself feels very lightweight - very generous to call it an endmill. I will replace it with a bandolier from Strapcode. Compared with the engineer bracelet on the Wavemaster, the Proteus band is a dud.
Frankly I kind of like the angular, slab-sided aesthetic. Re the dial It's a quirky combo, but I'm not sure that's a bad thing. I like a chunky "butch" watch that doesn't take itself too seriously. I love the bolt second hand. You're only shelling out $270 so have some fun! The sharp edges are my main concern, but they are facing away from the user, so unless I am caressing the watch "My Precious!" they should not be a big issue re wearability. Me likey - I might pull the trigger on this.
Hi Jody, I am waiting for the Patek Phillip Calatrava review with the warning: “This watch was sent to me free by the company, I don’t have to send it back”.
The case shape on the top makes it look bigger and chunkier. I have a Zelos swordfish and the Phoibos looks like it would wear bigger. I hope this won't be as big of a flop as the great wall watch.
I really like their logo, and the 007 is on my buy list if it’s ever back in stock (if I have the funds at the time). Need it to be in stock for a awhile.
I agree about the website full of sold out watches. I have become disappointed waiting for the eagle ray bronze model ive had my eye on because its been sold out for months.
Hi Jody best review that I’ve seen of this watch so far so well done. We need reviews like this more often. I love this brand they do make excellent watches for the money. I must say I do like the second hand but that’s what these reviews are all about. I agree that the finishing can be a bit hit and miss sometimes. But nether the less still a nice watch and good review
I think it looks fantastic. If you don't want it send it to me, and I'll even pay the postage and duty, can't say fairer than that. If the back won't come off with a Rolex type remover, and rubber ball will do it
Hi Jodi great video again , but I just had the email from helm , the Vanuatu is ready for shipping next week , thanks to you I ordered one , canna wait 😁 cheers
Hope Phoibos would make some watches on the smaller side, about 36mm-38mm with a sub 47mm lug to lug. That would be such a classic size, tired of all these big watches these companies are releasing.
Overall a lovely looking piece, I think maybe some of your "dislikes" may have been just a little harsh! However.......for me the absolute deal killer would be that Harry Potter second hand! 😂 imo how to ruin a really nice looking watch.
I have tried for the life of me to find and purchase the py007c...this vid confirms my fears that it is no longer being released?!! Any word on that or line on one of them? Also would love to hear your comparison of the py007 and the px002. Thanks, love your reviews!
I discovered this brand thanks to this video and they have some beautiful watches. I would like to buy a PHOIBOS EAGLE RAY GMT PX023B 300M Dive Watch Blue But it was impossible to find it. Jodie is right, the could keep making some of the olders better than go for new designs. 90% of them are out of stock...they just put the honey on my lips...
Jody! Pagani design has a GMT, since there has been a lot of GMTs on this channel recently, could you please taka a look at it. They claim 100m water Resistance and sapphire crystal
It's got some nice looking features, and a few that I'm not too fond of. I love that crown, I think it looks pretty ace. The date window and the off-white border of the dial are kind of off-putting to me. I understand that its that colour because of the lume, but I have seen many other watches that had pure white lumed parts. The script font for the text above the 6 doesn't really bother me.
Yes Jody - it has some features at that price that a Seiko doesn't have: ceramic bezel and sapphire, specifically. But as you so adroitly pointed out, the fit and finish leave a lot to be desired. Honestly, I'd rather have the Seiko, warts and all, for the price, the Seiko movement in the Seiko case, the warranty, the horological significance, the fit and finish, the reliability, and the name on the watch. No, Seiko isn't perfect, but... Well, this one is another gussied up pig. 🐷 As always, I enjoy your point of view, your outstanding showmanship and attention to detail. Keep up the great work!
Enjoyable delivery and content as always Jodie. Check out the Geckota G-02 200m vintage diver from watch gecko uk. $300 range, ETA 2824-2 clone PT5000 movement. Sapphire, super luminova and a fantastic bracelet strap. I love mine and a real evolution in budget micro brand stuff. You have to review it!
When are we going to see a review of any Reef Tiger watch? I've seen seen a number of them on the Aliexpress website, and they look very interesting. I would love to see a review, and here an expert opinion on this make. Fingers crossed! ⌚
O my, I absolutely love this one. Just too bad I do not have that kind of money laying around as I just lost my job 😞 due to bloody Corona. O well, keep on dreaming
Hey mate... don't get deterred... keep looking. Hopes you will get back on your feet soon. Everyone has ups and downs but don't give up your watch hobby. You don't have to have Rolex or Omega to have a nice collection. The importance is you love the pieces that you could afford and keep going.
Love the watch, have ehm, 5 Phoibos now mostly as a result of your channel haha. Possibly remove caises with one of those ball type caise back remover ?? Nice one Jody.😃
Youre one of my fav watch channels because unlike other channels you stick to the low/mid range stuff. Almost every watch channel starts out like you then once they become educated they graduate to Rolex etc and never go back because those brands are "beneath" them.
entirely this. Making me fall in love with watches again after I got put off because I choose not to drop 5k on a watch.
Totally agree. I'm very aware of the law of diminishing returns, and everybody has a sweet spot. I bought a 1997 Mazda Miata for $6000, so it would take a lot of convincing that a watch could be as good as that!
It’s the same as a omega sea master case back. You can easily remove with a 3 prong tool. You just have to be more careful.
I was just about to comment the same.. 👊😁
Sticky/friction ball caseback opener for this one. For the record, they open pretty much any screw-on caseback : )
Definitely some Zelos DNA in this one!
I try to use my sticky ball for everything but if the case has been screwed back tightly with a proper metal caseback tool then the ball has its limitations.
yup should open this or anything else with a screw on caseback right up, just received mine today works like a charm

Gonna have to try one then👍
JODY- I have to disagree, I absolutely LOVE this Phoibos to me it is TRULY the "King of the Sea" just GORGEOUS!!!!
That caseback is beautiful. I dislike the dictionary most watches put on it, but don't wan't a sterile one as well. This is perfect!
Jody, now you are a watch review superstar with deep connections, you should get a bunch of microbrand divers and put them through a monstrous pressure testing machine to see if they really do hold up to the water resistances they claim.
Start with the zelos that claims 3000m
This sounds like a Christmas time leave project to me. Bring it on! The Jody ISO NH35 analysis.
Great idea
@@tantk6187 That's wild.
Worthwhile idea...💡
great review. i got my proteus yesterday and im in love with my blue dial version ! such value for money and i really dont mind the nh35 movement as i change watches daily

My brother sprinted into my room just in time for him to recite the intro with you, Jody haha :)
Ha! Say Helloooooo to your brother from me. Thanks for watching!
Just One More Watch He says Helloooo back! He’s got some of my older watches, and I’m turning him into a real seikoholic!
Love it 😆 Perhaps I need to come up with a catchphrase.

Thanks for all your Phoibos reviews, Jodie. I’ve just ordered an Eagle Ray in Red...looking forward to receiving it 👍
Great looking!!! Love these Phhoibos’sssssss!;)

I think it’s absolutely gorgeous!! Incredible value for money as well!
👍love that crown
Me too! Such fine detailing on the occy. Cheers mate!
The crown looks like a "rotory file" If you google it you will see what I mean.
Good shape and so glad they didn't make the spiral edges sharp. Also the raised logo is probably cast in, instead of a boring bit of (recessed) laser engraving.

I actually love everything about it. Mine is in Chicago right now somewhere. Hope it gets here soon!
I really like it. Thanks Phoibos for gifting the watch for review. I wish a watch company would make a smart watch on a really nice diver frame.
Truly correct, by the time I pull the trigger to buy one, the one I want is sold out.
Case back is very similar to Omega Seamaster, even their exhibition case back has that scalloped edge style. I guess there is a tool to fit that if a brand like Omega does it ? But clearly the cost difference makes the Phiobos a winner for most of us !
Guys can anyone recommend a decent braclet to replace this one? Got the white one and as Jodi points out the bracelet is disappointing for Phoibos.
I bought this same watch immediately after gettin the E-mail and I adored it until I noticed the slightly misaligned bezel. Sent it back 3-ish weeks ago and I’ll be waiting many more weeks until it arrived from Hong Kong
The dial is really nice looking and a little less expensive than the comparable Zelos, but I do agree with your critiques.
Thanks for the discount code mate! just saved $30USD on a Phoibos PY007B
Omega have a 12 "point" caseback on some of their watches, and maybe Certina too. No one complains about Breitlings with 15-side casebacks, do they? Anyway, I think a 4-point tool should manage fine.
Compared with the engineer bracelet on the Wavemaster, the Proteus band is a dud.
u r becoming more picky Jody. Really appreciate the honesty
Jooodyyyy... a case-back removal ball! It’s the only way to roll. I’ve removed my scalloped Omega style case-back with it many times
Hi Jody, I am waiting for the Patek Phillip Calatrava review with the warning: “This watch was sent to me free by the company, I don’t have to send it back”.
I wish you would have a word with Phoibos about having your discount code recognised in the EU store also Jody.
„borderline Comic Sans“ - I was thinking exactly the same thing when I saw this dial 🤣
The seconds hand is an atmospheric phenomenon. The dial is from space, but mined from the earth. Yet it is named for a sea god.
This one is a phoible.
Up late in the US. Glad to see a fresh watch video (20 minutes ago) to distract me from everything. Thanks Jody!
Take a break from the news, it hasn't been good since about last October, before our bushfires began..... 😪😷
Agree with your assertion, they should re release their older models.
The case shape on the top makes it look bigger and chunkier. I have a Zelos swordfish and the Phoibos looks like it would wear bigger. I hope this won't be as big of a flop as the great wall watch.
Mine arrived today, white dial version. The best version IMHO...
White dial sold out, so it seems people agree with you Henk!

Great looking piece.. Looking to pick one up.. The discount code doesn't work on the europe site though.. Keep up the good work fella 👍
Don’t Omega make similar caseback opening systems?
Hope Phoibos would make some watches on the smaller side, about 36mm-38mm with a sub 47mm lug to lug. That would be such a classic size, tired of all these big watches these companies are releasing.
Overall a lovely looking piece, I think maybe some of your "dislikes" may have been just a little harsh! However.......for me the absolute deal killer would be that Harry Potter second hand! 😂 imo how to ruin a really nice looking watch.

Hi! Would You please do a review of the Cadisen's Royal Oak homage?
As always, I enjoy your point of view, your outstanding showmanship and attention to detail. Keep up the great work!
Another great review.I agree the date widow needs to be fixed.
jody, not sure if phoibos missed a trick, but the code JOMW10 doesnt work on the phoibos europe site, would be nice if they could add this in?
I think you will need a friction ball to open that caseback
Best crown on a watch ever!
You have to review it!
really like there phantom squid logo! Its a beauty and that lume.... wow! thanks for the review!
But Jode, you deserve your own tropical island; or at least Mrs. JOMW does.
Ha! She THINKS she does at least...... Cheers mate!
It's a good thing so many great watches are over 40mm in case diameter..
.. be cause anything over 39mm is a deal-killer for me..
When are we going to see a review of any Reef Tiger watch? I've seen seen a number of them on the Aliexpress website, and they look very interesting. I would love to see a review, and here an expert opinion on this make. Fingers crossed! ⌚
I like the seconds hand, the crown and the overall look. Not keen on the movement and it's a bit thick.... I'll stick with my Py007C thanks.....
Sadly, the Coupon code for the Phoibos doesn't work in the European store. Sneaky!!
Don't really have to ask "Where's the beef?" on this watch. That crown design is fantastic.
Nice looking Zelos... I mean Phoibos 🤫
I'm with you on the font and the date window Jody. But I don't mind the handset. Great review as always.
Thanks mate!
Looks great. Certainly different to most of the divers out there.
O my, I absolutely love this one. Just too bad I do not have that kind of money laying around as I just lost my job 😞 due to bloody Corona. O well, keep on dreaming
Hope you get back on your feet soon, mate.
@@stephenrochester6309 Thanks mate. Unfortunately I have a serious heart condition so Corona might be deadly for me. Such is life 👍
Hey mate... don't get deterred... keep looking.
Best t shirt ever 👊🏽
