I grew up with the first gen 2.4d5 for 10 years and it was a mint car. Build quality was much better than the new one and so much more comfortable. New one also has a tiny steering wheel and the rear seats feel like an after thought
I always buy my Volvo's previously loved and on a budget. Currently own a V70 R-design and an S80 V8. The new style XC90 hasn't depreciated enough to be a player for me at this time but has been on my radar for a while. I'll certainly be looking at them when the time is right. Nice review!
Best way to buy them, bought mine at exactly 3 years old with 50k kms, and paid well under half the price new, and you could not really tell the difference between it and a new car.

Bought a 2018 XC60 almost a year ago and every time I get in it I it puts a smile on my face. Best to buy one with a few bells and whistles, even though the base models are well equipped. Avoid the very early ones as they can suffer from excessive oil consumption due to an issue with the piston rings, and don't expect cheap repair bills if anything major goes wrong. All that said, my 2016 XC90 D5 R-Design is a great car and has had very few problems in the 4 years I've owned it.

At last, since my comment few month ago asking if hopefully we can see your views on this Beautiful Swedish engineering. Such a joy to own and drive this car. Puts a smile on my children’s faces every time we do our cross Europe road trip (that’s 4 X a year) the comfort and space in this car is unrivalled in my opinion
Great car! Owned a 66 plate D5 Inscription for 3 years…towed a horse trailer to the ‘Gymkhana’, lugged 7 people around, transported double beds, rubbish etc…very practical and surprisingly nippy due to the ‘power plus’ compressed air turbo boost. It is a BIG car though, so a bit tight in a multi-storey car park!😱
I love these for some strange reason. I like the MK2 because they are so comfortable and easy to drive. I think I would have the inscription variant. I don't know if anyone remembers, but there was a Red XC90, on a 65 plate, which was used a press car. We sold that in my workplace.
These are great cars. Good technology and safety, the ride is excellent, materials feel expensive and solid. The engine options just let them down. The 2.0 petrol and diesels are too small, and while the T8 plug-in hybrid is quick, but horrendous on fuel once the battery has drained.
When I heard Volvo put a 2.0L 4 cylinder diesel in the XC90 i thought to myself that Volvo has serious balls to put it in such a heavy car till I felt the D5 in the V90 Cross Country of which I actually fell in love with it,🤔 actually might consider the V90 cross country as my next daily
I have one and prefer it over the xc90 aside from the smaller boot, ive a d4 which I think is fine in the v90, in the xc90 i think the d5 is needed. V90 is very nice but ive a fair few software and electrical issues so keep those in mind. The dealer network here in Ireland is absolutely clueless so hopefully not the same wherever you are.
It’s an absolute humongous car but it’s an absolute beauty, sits well and feel like it’s proportioned well, usually these big Volvo SUV’s are heavy at the front and sit really high at the back, this thing sits well and looks amazing
Bought a 2018 momentum d5 model and love it! Had for one month , if your interested go a look at the dealers the pictures don’t do the car justice ! I traded in a 2 year old 5008 for a 5 year old xc90… the xc90 felt like a newer car, great video and inspired me to switch, very safe ,solid, lots of room, love the pilot assist! Truly feels great commuting to work and plenty of room for the family , the ultimate all rounder for me, I can get 7 in and still have a boot! I would also stick with main dealer and get a service plan , that’s my opinion though .
Great vid 👌🏻 We've recently bought a 2018 xc60 and really like it so maybe in the future I'd consider the xc90 , the new shape in both 60/90 are so much nicer. Cheers matt 👍🏻
XC60 is another car that I would have, in a heartbeat Big enough for a family, or a camping trip. But small enough to get around town with ease. Love em ❤ but only with a 2.4 D5, or even the 2.0D3, which is also 5cyl. Just love the noise they make.
Volvo cars are definitely more appealing to a younger age group than years ago and they don't have to look ugly or square to maintain their safety standards . Great stuff Volvo 👏🏻
Great camerawork and editing on this one. They always seem like they are even bigger than Range Rovers but maybe it’s just the styling. Good to hear you found it easy to drive. Ah, and a ‘Should you buy a used Alfa’ video would be fun!
I've got a fully loaded xc60 and it's fantastic, a bit boring but it ticks all the boxes for me, can do everything in it... apart from have fun driving
@@lukewokeywoos maybe, but id only buy this car when i have a family, road trips etc etc, not to have fun with. if i wanted to have fun id go in my mx5 or my m5
I've just bought a 2017 D5 R-Design with Polestar myself. 1 month in & extremely happy. The design has held up so well & given this will be the last XC90 generation it'll hold its value really, especially in Australia where diesels still reign supreme for many reasons. Its replacement, the EX90 doesn't arrive here until end of 2024 & that will likely be pushing $160k. Mine has almost every optional extra & it barely looks out of place compared to modern standards. There's not really anything its missing both in creature comforts or safety tech. The B&W sound system is sublime FYI - make sure this was added if you're in the market for one. The only slight negative is that the engine noise is noticeable as it's getting going if you push it between 0-40kmh. Other than that it's a completely serene highway cruiser, which around here is perfect for us. Torque band is perfect for this car & the polestar tuning really makes a difference. The other thing is the interior quality. I've driven this compared to the newer Volvos and can honestly say the quality isn't what it used to be pre-2020. But test that out for yourself, i think you'll be surprised. It still feels like pretty mucha new car, but it's also clearly been well looked after by its single previous owner. All-in all, can see myself with this one for a long time.
That’s a smashing looking car. Recent Volvos have been really good Ive been impressed. My parter’s dad has a V90 in Fire & Rescue service livery and it’s very cool - so high end even for an emergency service variant. I also spent a lot of time in a new shape XC60 doing my trailer driving test - it was manual, obviously, and the gearbox was very slick. The car was very comfortable and a pleasure to drive (even with an annoying trailer on the back). I was sat there for a total of 8 hours over 2 days thinking how wonderful the XC90 must be if the XC60 is this good! You’re absolutely bang on about the touch screen - I found that quite annoying to use and never really got the hang of it. Apart from a fullsize Range Rover, I can’t think of a better SUV for 30k Great video, Matt! Thanks 👍🏼
I've always been a huge Volvo fan, I bought a 69 plate V60 January this and absolutely love it but if I'm being honest the dream is to have an XC90. I agree with you on climate controls shouldn't be touch screen but in mine I just use voice control using the button on the steering wheel to adjust things when driving.
Tell you what Matt if the BBC ever decides to re-invent Top Gear in the format it used to be in the good old early Clarkson days you would defo be a number one choice to present that program. A good balance of useful information and a dry witty delivery style that hits the spot. I just hope someone from thier production team comes across your channel and thinks the same. Great review as alaways . Clive
Too BIG a car for me. A 2013 V40 2 litre D3 (5 pot) is my Volvo of choice. Agree with your comments re the later version. Beautifully put together and quality everywhere.
Ours is a 2017 Volvo XC90 Inscription Pro D5, the exterior colour is Maple brown metallic which is a very rare colour. It also has a lovely cream interior with amazing wood veneer, I love these cars! Great video!
I agree, streets better than the previous version , very good looking SUV but the engines are too weak and cannot use it for any sort of towing . Misses a 3 L diesel else i think at 150k miles a 2l will be finished balling that heavy body
I bought a late 2016 T8 Inscription 2 years ago just before the second hand prices went up. Great car and a better option now my two youngest children are out of car seats and the two oldest are both over 6ft. Much more comfortable vs the old 2006 Sharan where the floor is higher for all the rear seats which made it uncomfortable for the two tallest. Zero tax, loads of space and great to drive. I get around 20 miles on battery only and that covers most of my short city journeys. I had one crazy mpg on battery only where I drove 16 miles at 2am with a few hills to go down more than up and the car trip computer showed 562mpg when I got home 😊
I owned a 2007 D5 XC 90 for 14 years. I boutght it in 2010 with 50,000 on it. The car had almost 300,000kms when I traded it last month on a 2016 twin turbo diesel XC 90 that had 89,000kms on it. The old car was really good for around 12 years then age started to reveal that extra work and expense was in order. I'm talking engine mounts; shock absorbers and worst of all, the swirl gear to the EGR system. And, to add to the expense, it needed new tyres for registration just before I traded it. The old car has made me an XC 90 fan - without any doubt. Volvo has been making these cars since the early 2000's and they will go for ever if Volvo recommended maintenance is adhered to. In reality, this also applies to ALL cars. So, when this 2016 model came up on carsales, I did the deal and bought it. This 2016 Inscription is Polstar enhanced and it goes like the clappers. All controls are much more sensitive to what I'm used to and the steering is super light, but on 275x45x20 tyres, that's okay. Fuel consumption is amazing at around 5L/100k and the large 70+ litre tank means I'm not filling it every week. Suspension is firmer than I'd prefer but I'm getting used to it. Summed up, I got a good car. It's registered to May 2025 and tyres will be due by then. The next minor service is 10,000ks away, so other than fitting mud flaps (we live off a gravel road) there is nothing to spend on this car until mid next year. And , for those who may wonder, I keep cars longer because I know they are designed to last. This one will be mine for around 10 years to 2034. And one final tip - I use only Mobil 1 engine oil.
Had a June 22 as a courtesy car today, still looks amazing but really starting to feel it’s age now, especially the infotainment. Refinement was way short of my Q7 but a very comfortable and capable car. Third row seats much roomier than Q7 although not easy to access. For the longest time you could not get any discount on these but now 15K is possible so clearly nearing end of life.
Great video! I’ve been waiting for you to do 1 of these for ages. I’m still stuck between, x5, GLE (even the later M) or RR sport. With 3 children. Sometimes with 5, we needed a 7 seater WITH a boot. Almost all of them have next to nothing with 7 seats up. So this could be a winner. Cheers Matt. Another great video!
The only thing to know about a Volvo is the order in which your (a) get a family and (b) get a Volvo. For clarity, acquire the family first, Volvo second. The XC90 is gloriousness understated.
We have had 850 estate, v70 estate, test drove series 1 XC90, which I didn’t particularly enjoy. Test drove series 2 XC90 and bought one in 2017. Still have it and enjoy it throughly. My favourite though was my 850 estate.
I’ve got a Volvo s90 and all the heating controls including seats and steering wheel heat can be controlled with voice control, so no need to take your eyes off of the road Matt! But great vid anyway.
took my 19 plate V40 for a service was given a brand new one of these 21 plate was b5 vegan spec no leather!! but what a great car it was and for its size extremely economical! only wished i could have afforded one!
I had an 18 plate XC90 D5 R-Design for 13 months. I loved it, but it didn't love me, it spent a total of 1 of those 13 months over 8 visits in the dealership being fixed for various issues and a also persistent but intermittent EML. I part exchanged it in the end, even as I drove to the dealership to get rid the EML was on. Fortunately it went off before I arrived.
Good review and as a 2021 Mercedes GLE 350 de ( hybrid) owner have considered this previously…..but it doesn’t have the same quality feel and prestige for similar money……I get 50mpg and 50 miles range on full electric mode so very happy and will stick with the Mercedes!
Just swapped my x5 for one of these. Just love the interior and understated luxury. More people are willing to let you out of a junction in one of these more so than they did with my x5 lolz
i have a 2021 b5 , can't fault it other than now that my kids don't need so much stuff when we going places , the size has become a little of a drag to drive, but if you need the space ... go for it , it's an amazing car
i cant thank you enough for these wonderful reviews, i hope to see the alfa romeo video come up soon as its a car i want one day aswell! fabulous video as always, thank you for making my day!
Great looking car. I've had a mk1 2010 for 4 yrs (bought for wife but mostly used by me as she drives my mazda 2) ... And everything you said was valid.... But... I wasn't always waiting for something else to break or fail like the discovery 3 she had for 4 yrs before that.... Total money pit..... I had a RR vogue for 3 yrs at that time which was better... But my volvo is best described as a functional reliable and multi useful, comfortable if rather bland car. I tow a large touring caravan so need 1 big vehicle.i no longer need 7 seats but handy to have. Maybe in a Yr or 2 I'll change it and very possibly get a mk 2. Having had Jeep, land rover and volvo I would say volvo are by far the better build and more reliable.
"Tracking shots " as well..... your vids have always be good/interesting, now as with many RUclips channels I simply cannot find anthing as good on telly. Cheers for everything so far and every continued success.
Great review - fantastic car (I have one, exactly the same model) and the only thing I would say is that I've never got the MPG you mentioned. 28mpg around town and 33mpg on a long run is realistically what you can actually expect, once the pram and a kid or 2 is in the car.
Looking forward to getting one of these, but for now I’ll keep my 200k 2010 xc90… yes it’s boring, but… it never goes wrong, it’s cheap to fix and as a car for my wife I know the family are safe … I just drive my rs4 when I want some fun so the xc90 makes perfect sense as our cheap family school bus
Really like the design inside and out but there are two major things that draw it back, engine choices and the towing capacity as you said a 3.0l V6 Turbo Diesel and a petrol V8 version would be nice and 3.5t towing capacity.
My 2011 Mercedes E350 with a 3 l diesel burns burns almost twice as much fuel both in town and on a motorway. With current fuel prices - you can have my towing capacity for free :D
Looks good but would be a lot better with a 3 liter V6 diesel and normal buttons instead of the horrible and unsafe touchscreen. Would be cool if some after market kit was available to replace the screen with traditional high quality knobs.
What a great looking car that is and I have to agree, its waaaaay better than the previous model. Those with a family and 20k to spend could do a heck of a lot worse.
Nice car. I was looking at these or an XC60 to replace a V40. In the end I bought a Mazda CX5 (slight difference) as I couldn't justify the cost for a car that sits on the drive 90% of the time now I work from home.
I always find the comments of HPA the gem when auto trader stalking. My 2c,... I have an XC90, 71 plate as my family bus. We absolutely love it. It's here to stay... the second car is the one that I get influenced by Matt to change lol. But seriously, it's an amazing car for a family. R design is a sweet spot in spec for me, I've had an inscription before and didn't think it was worth it, it was lovely, but just not close to German spec luxury. Went R design on this one, with the wheels, sunroof, radio, tow bar, good radio etc etc.... very happy. Bought winter wheels and tyres, drove to the alps, not a bother. Will say, it's far more comfy on the winter tyres!!
Volvo make some of the best cars right now. They look gorgeous with the blonde interior too. Just wish they’d be a bit more daring with the ambient lighting options.
The Mk1 XC90 is the car I have the best memories with ever. That was the reason for me buying another one (it was right near you in Stockton). I know they're old fashioned, but for me the best driving position of all time. I just don't get tired in them. And I don't mind the boat like drive. This (mk1) is the first car we disagree on btw. 😅 (Based on your videos)
I love the Inscription models with a silver exterior, crystal gear knob, beige leather and oakwood trim. The D5 is a tank and the T6 is great as well! Great video as always Matt, this is a must buy Swedish SUV :D
In 6 years of owning our t8 in Canada and 65kkm haven’t had any issues to complain about. It has been far more reliable than our x5 with a V8, same performance and half the consumption.
I owned the pre as a family car and it did the job , not the best looking and flimsy interior bits but a proper Trojan 👍 can’t beat the shoguns in my opinion.
I have had a T8 XC90 for 3 years now and it is an absolute weapon of a car! I did look at the diesel model, but the hybrid makes more sense for me as we can do the school run and short journeys on electric then when we travel to see family we can see 34 to 36mpg on a run unless you push it hard, then expect 28 ish. The T8 is 2 litre Turbo chargerd super charged and if called upon, its a rocketship, but then expect the thirst. Overall, any Mk2 XC90 is excellent. I am gald I didn't go for the Range Rover.

It's great that you put the fuel consumption in l/100km ! Love it
Yes ! For us in metric land ( I'm in CZ ) it's great
These are great cars.
The dealer network here in Ireland is absolutely clueless so hopefully not the same wherever you are.
parked next to one the other day, they are massive in person
The answer is yes. I have one and it is absolutely brilliant.
Great vid 👌🏻
We've recently bought a 2018 xc60 and really like it so maybe in the future I'd consider the xc90 , the new shape in both 60/90 are so much nicer.
Cheers matt 👍🏻
XC60 is another car that I would have, in a heartbeat
Big enough for a family, or a camping trip.
Yes...such a timeless design, quality materials this second is excellent...could do with a nice slick V6 but all the same it's quite good
One of these in black, driving at night or in low light has a professional and ministerial look.
This is the car I would buy if I wanted an SUV.
I’m 15 and really want to drive ! I want this 2nd/3rd car
I've got a fully loaded xc60 and it's fantastic, a bit boring but it ticks all the boxes for me, can do everything in it... apart from have fun driving
Let down with the engines then
@@lukewokeywoos maybe, but id only buy this car when i have a family, road trips etc etc, not to have fun with. if i wanted to have fun id go in my mx5 or my m5
@@a.t.g000 M5 & MX-5 ... connoisseur cars
@@lukewokeywoos not really, just the handling is not really sporty
The new video production is superb! Noticed and appreciated let alone the content being on point as always!
Much appreciated!
My current car, glad you like it :)
Thanks 👍🏼
I think you need to get out more.
@@martinjustice 😂👍🏼
I've always been a huge Volvo fan, I bought a 69 plate V60 January this and absolutely love it but if I'm being honest the dream is to have an XC90. I agree with you on climate controls shouldn't be touch screen but in mine I just use voice control using the button on the steering wheel to adjust things when driving.
Short answer : YES !
It's one of my favourite SUVs, but finding one with a low mileage could be quite difficult...
I've got one (T8 recharge) which I love...and has plenty of power so can shift when needed plus loads of room. Very happy owner.
Clive
When and if ever became longer and better 😊
Too BIG a car for me. A 2013 V40 2 litre D3 (5 pot) is my Volvo of choice. Agree with your comments re the later version. Beautifully put together and quality everywhere.
Probably the only car in the world that looks good in every colour and trim available
We have this exact car (even the same colour!) and even though its not the most dynamic to drive, its the perfect family cruiser!!
U have any problems ??
Ours is a 2017 Volvo XC90 Inscription Pro D5, the exterior colour is Maple brown metallic which is a very rare colour.
It also has a lovely cream interior with amazing wood veneer, I love these cars!
Great video!
I agree, streets better than the previous version , very good looking SUV but the engines are too weak and cannot use it for any sort of towing . Misses a 3 L diesel else i think at 150k miles a 2l will be finished balling that heavy body
The Volvo XC90 print on the road was a nice little detail that I enjoyed
Fair review, quality car. I'm on my 2nd S90. Do like Volvo's.
Im looking for a T6 2017 I would be so grateful if u give me ant advice or what to look for
I’ve got a Volvo s90 and all the heating controls including seats and steering wheel heat can be controlled with voice control, so no need to take your eyes off of the road Matt!
I’ve got inscription with bowes / Wilkins sound system .. next time you drive it put it in dynamic mode .. that might bring a smile to your face ..
you definitely should make a video with the giulia. it is a beautiful car.
More people are willing to let you out of a junction in one of these more so than they did with my x5 lolz
what year was your x5 and what didnt you like about them
The brand image of BMW is unfortunately abysmal. I've experienced the same in my XF vs 6 Series.
i have a 2021 b5 , can't fault it other than now that my kids don't need so much stuff when we going places , the size has become a little of a drag to drive, but if you need the space ... go for it , it's an amazing car
i cant thank you enough for these wonderful reviews, i hope to see the alfa romeo video come up soon as its a car i want one day aswell! fabulous video as always, thank you for making my day!
Been tempted to swap my wifes Tiguan MK2 R - Line for a Volvo XC90. Think this video has just convinced me to do it.
"Tracking shots " as well..... your vids have always be good/interesting, now as with many RUclips channels I simply cannot find anthing as good on telly. Cheers for everything so far and every continued success.
Thanks! I appreciate that!
The Thor styled DRL give it a crisp modern look that is a class above many SUV. Well engineered and styled. Yes great choice.
Great review - fantastic car (I have one, exactly the same model) and the only thing I would say is that I've never got the MPG you mentioned. 28mpg around town and 33mpg on a long run is realistically what you can actually expect, once the pram and a kid or 2 is in the car.
On my second one, great car, super value and of course safe as houses. Great video, thank you.
Im looking for a 2018 t6 inscription whats your thought’s
Volvo is for life!
Agree, I'd have an xc90 in a heartbeat if it had 3.5t towing.
My 2011 Mercedes E350 with a 3 l diesel burns burns almost twice as much fuel both in town and on a motorway. With current fuel prices - you can have my towing capacity for free :D
I do wish it had a 5 cylinder. It makes a quirky sound fitting for the brand
Nice video!
Please make a review on the Volvo XC70 third generation (2008-2016)
Nice car. I was looking at these or an XC60 to replace a V40. In the end I bought a Mazda CX5 (slight difference) as I couldn't justify the cost for a car that sits on the drive 90% of the time now I work from home.
I found Hallmark Volvo in Stockport very good as an independent
Chyna
Yes do the Alfa Romeo video
Smooth Radio showing on the touch screen😯
I love the Inscription models with a silver exterior, crystal gear knob, beige leather and oakwood trim.
The D5 is a tank and the T6 is great as well!
Great video as always Matt, this is a must buy Swedish SUV :D
In quite a crowded luxury SUV sector I think it stands out quite well 👍🏻
In 6 years of owning our t8 in Canada and 65kkm haven’t had any issues to complain about. It has been far more reliable than our x5 with a V8, same performance and half the consumption.
Volvo are on a roll at the moment
No way. I've literally just been looking for xc90 review
Looks great. Get use to looking at it parked since due to being one of the least reliable in its class it will be parked at the repair shop often.
Use voice control for climate!! I have a 23 model year V90 T6 Ultimate with Google and the voice control is fab!
Best car I’ve had as a work wagon, remember speaking to you back in 2020 Matt saying try it out! Great review 🫡
Reading my mind, was checking these out earlier today!
Yes you should Matt. We have the XC60 and it’s fantastic 👍
(IMO) stunning vid Matt the Volvo XC90 is the best looking vehicle to exist for a idea, Note: Its just My own Opinion on the suggestion, Advice; "Feel free to exchange eachothers own Opinion even mine to eachother".
I'd genuinely love to see you do a video on cupholders. When they first became a thing. Which car has the best and worst ones. Any particularly quirky featured ones etc.
