You know, until you started this mini series, I didn't fully grasp exactly how bad it was. I really thought it was similar to my spending habits of my early 20s. I've always been extra glad for you that you've been able to curb your spending and work on yourself internally to figure out where this was all coming from, but hear you list everything you bought and how frequently you were shopping makes me extra glad for you. You've done some really great work on yourself, Hannah, and I hope you are proud of how far you've come.

Hearing how you rationalised your purchases is so jarring. It’s what I do all the time. Sometimes I can refrain from buying makeup for a week, but then I end up spending loads on skincare instead. I know it’s a problem, but it’s so difficult to change my patterns. Thank you for sharing your past struggles, it’s definitely eye-opening.

I've had the same issue with the skincare, but then I forced myself not to buy new stuff until I use up the old stuff. This forces to make really thought out purchases, because I can't buy something new even if I don't really like what I've bought. I have to finish it first. It's a bit late, but maybe that'll work for you too.

I realize how stressful this must be to do this video series for you, but I so greatly appreciate that you're doing it. This is helping me a lot with identifying the reasons why I shop so rhythmically (and far too frequently, but that much I at least already recognized).

It's my understanding that if sephora doesn't sell the item anymore it doesn't show up in our purchase history. One of my first pallets I bought from sephora was the too faced boudoir pallet which I loved and it's not on my list anymore as they don't sell it. As useful as the purchase history is for self reflection, I believe it's primarily used as a marketing tool. If you want to remember that product you used to have but can't remember what it is, sephora conveniently has a history list available so you can repurchase it. If they show products that they dont sell anymore that would cause us to click off the site. I'm always impressed by all the ways sephora sucks us in. It's thanks to you that I am more self aware now. I love this series and have gone through a similar process myself. I learned alot about myself through it and I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts as I always do.

I think you've made me realize something about myself today that I needed to understand. Maybe one of the main reasons of my high-end/luxury purchasing is how it makes me feel. It's like I'm buying into the dream of having and being posh and having the luxury things most around me don't. Don't get me wrong I love my products but it's more of a fantasy of being "fancy".

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  4 года назад +34

yes, this was definitely true for me. I think that in the moment of buying something expensive, we are living a fantasy that we are rich enough to buy expensive things. That fantasy moment is addictive, but it doesn't last past the moment of the purchase, which keeps us always going back to buy another expensive thing to feel that fantasy for another moment.

I have been following your channel since the no-buy year. To be frank - it is the love for beautiful things and desire for perfect curation I relate to, but I didn't always understand your other consumerist struggles.
I know that you have been on the receiving end of quite a lot of criticism, especially since starting the year of less stuff. I too have contemplated unsubscribing since I had trouble understanding some thought processes myself. But always stuck around because in the end - I like your presentation style and I still relate to a lot of it.
This mini series is helping me understand your progress so much better and moving away from the assumptions I have made from my minimalist inclinations. The new perspective makes me think I will go back and revisit old content - especially significant check-ins.
In short - good content, good progress, you're doing great.

It’s kind of like we’ve always heard & believed Hannah when she said, to paraphrase, “Y’all have no idea how bad it was and how far I’ve come,” but seeing it laid bare is hugely eye-opening. This is such a brave and revealing series to do, and it completely & finally puts her whole channel in context.

So much of this resonates with me. After the disappointing election results in late 2016 and then losing my job shortly after in 2017, I filled the hole in my life with hours of RUclips videos and mindless online Sephora shopping. It was an escape for me during that difficult time in my lofe. A coping mechanism I most certainly couldn't afford. So glad I have since recovered from that mindset and that I have found your videos.

Hannah, I’ve been watching since the No Buy Year, and this video, for me, really helped to to unify the body of your RUclips work. I obviously can’t speak for anyone else, but it is really data-driven examples of pathological hyper-consumerism that I, as a viewer, can apply to my own shopping practices. Almost like the first year was conceptual, but this was more concretely behavioral- and I really appreciate the work to put this together and expose the purchase history. Having worked in the beauty industry for the last thirteen years, so much of this purchasing has felt very normalized, often at the expense of my own comfortability with so much stuff despite the dopamine hit provided by the actual acquisition of said stuff.
I think you’ve inspired a No-Buy for me. Thank you.

Since I saw part one, which sobered me up because I used to shop at a drugstore almost weekly for a long time, I've been trying to remember this practice that I learned years ago during teacher training.
Today it hit me: it is ipsative assessment, meaning that a student's current performance is compared to his/her former performances. It can be a very empowering method, because it enables the teacher as well as the student to look at a timeline of achievements that built on each other and lead to the current performance.
In a way, that seems to be what you are doing for yourself here. You really have come a long way! And again, thank you for sharing this.

I really admire the amount of courage it takes to even look back at a detailed list of your own problematic behaviour and then make it public, and how well you are able to convey the idea that we shouldn't relay in our magical thinking. But also that having issues like these does not take value or relevance away from our work in the world, which is a misconception that we as women with traditionally "feminine" hobbies tend to face. I am really just in awe of how incredibly helpful and brave this content is.

These videos are so illuminating to me. As I watched your no buy year, you seemed to have such resolve and had a so much self awareness. After seeing these last two videos, I’m even more impressed by how successful you have been on your journey. The fact that you basically placed a Sephora order every ten days for a year really speaks to how much shipping had a grip on your life. I’d love a video about how you were able to go cold turkey so easily. Is that your personality? I mean you always talked about your shopping problem, but I never realized how bad it was until these videos. Good on you for deciding to change and sticking to it!

I'm so glad you're doing these videos, they're really illuminating. Despite how frequently you have talked about your pre-no-buy shopping behavior, it didn't really click for me at which frequency you used to shop, until you started going through this list. I feel like I now better understand why you felt like something drastic had to happen, and why you wanted to document/hold yourself accountable on RUclips. so thanks for sharing this with us, I get that it's uncomfortable to do, but it's really appreciated. What tremendous courage to expose yourself, be vulnerable and to cause all of us to take a look at our own shopping and self-soothing patterns. This may be too personal and possibly you have addressed this previously, how did this time impact your relationship with Joe (and no worries if you do not want to share)? I love this series. I’m so much more aware of how much I hate samples. I gave an entire makeup bag full of perfume samples to a friend’s daughter.
I was inspired to look at my Sephora history. Gah, I made a few truly dud purchases. But I found a lot of good things. Now I mostly shop at Ulta or directly from websites so I can catch a good bargain or get just exactly what I want without being distracted by something I don’t need.

This was late 2000's me. I spent every spare second of my day shopping and when I couldn't do that (do to the 2008 recession) I would go hang out in Target for hours...even though I couldn't buy anything. I know all these feels; when I think about how I used to justify purchases I can't believe myself! Past me was so different. I'm glad you made this and part 1. Also, the FOMO from watching RUclipsrs is REAL. I can't remember how many things I bought between 2012 and 2016 because a RUclipsr said it was good, even though I didn't use that type of product! What was I doing with my life? 🤨

After watching a Fleur de Force video in which she said “if you get one thing from NARS make sure it’s the Kalahari duo!” I went to Sephora and bought it. Never mind that I never wore eyeshadow and now, years later, I still don’t! I ended up feeling that guilt and returning it, but I was so susceptible to the power of her suggestion! I’ve come a long way since then- in part thanks to your videos, Hannah!

Just listening to this reminds me of the chaotic splurging frenzy that I was once in. And this is just Sephora purchases for you. I feel like this is close to how I was about shopping in general but I always shopped brand websites because I think they give better discounts and samples. I have also only recently started breaking myself of spending up to $20 per day on things like energy drinks, cigarettes and fast food. I have more money to spend so I have of course been shopping. I'm gonna get it under control though :) I hope you don't let reviewing this get you down though. So much progress over the years!

I think how some of us are able to “get away” with it , is simply that our SO has NO idea how much a sea berry cleansing oil or Good genes is. Further , with skin care , mine doesn’t even know what purpose each thing serves so therefore wouldn’t know I was overbuying . and you can further hide your purchases if you’re the one who pays the bills. by hide I don’t mean purposely hide, just that it’s not obvious to the other person.

Miss Misto Oh for sure. Especially when your partner is a straight man, he is just not likely to realize that little silver bottle of “acne lotion” cost $100, so he won’t think much about it. It’s sort of the opposite of Lucille Bluth, “How much could a banana cost, $10?”
“How much could a bottle of

Wondering the same thing. I had a pretty serious beauty shopping struggle for ... about 10 years. My husband is pretty thorough about going through the credit card statements, and called me out - a lot - on my spending. I then started to do things like take cash out of the ATM or hoard cash from other sources, or buy gift cards (that wouldn't show up as "Ulta" or "Sephora" or "Nordstroms" on the statements), in order to continue buying makeup and skincare. The lying and hiding really compromised the trust in my relationship and it's a source of a lot of shame for me. How have you and Joe navigated this? Wishing you the very best Hannah, you are an inspiration. Wish I'd figured things out more in my 20s or 30s (here I am in my 50s, ugh). Good on you!

erikawithac ikr? I remember showing him a screen grab of a PMG palette and he damn near passed out at the price . $175 for eyeshadow 😳😳 and I’m like , yeah but she has special shades. 😍
He made this exact face : 😒 lol.
However, as we have matured in our marriage we have both learned to be respectful of each other’s purchases and wants. Each persons choices are going to seem stupid and not worth it to the other person. He used to collect hundreds of miniatures for a game he played. Before I gained some perspective on the matter, I called them his barbies . And the $400 + 3D printer is imo ridiculous , however in his eyes , 150 palettes is stupid as well, and the printer has given him tons of joy. It’s so much healthier not to judge each other’s purchases, and in turn no one feels ashamed or like they have to hide anything 💕

It's strange hearing you describe the willingness to believe beauty youtubers/ influencers and the stark realization that it was based on trust for this stranger rather thank knowledge of yourself. I knew I had that in me too but I hadn't realized how powerful it was until you were talking about the l'occitane almond oil that Kathleen used to rave about. I don't even like the smell of almond and yet I had bought it too! I actually can no longer watch Kathleen because she is so good at conveying excitement and enjoyment- something at the core of my continually cravings with buying beautiful things. I haven't fully digested the larger implications or ramifications of this but it is certainly something to deeply reflect on.

Hello Hannah! This is my first comment, but I've been subscribing and watching you for over a year now, enjoying your content so much! I'm a person who relates a lot to your fantasy-self issues and buying stuff to fill a hole in your life, although I personally rarely spent money. I would rather spend hours of my time curating shopping carts and looking for things to want and then never buy anything. I always look for your long video essays and find this process of getting out of your addiction very helpful and very educational. This particular series makes me appreciate what you went through and share even more. I remember you saying in one of the videos from very early no buy year, that you will place an order at Sephora for a replacement, but you will also get free samples etc and how excited are you about it. In this context your year of less stuff makes so much sense and just shows how much you got through.
I have a question - watching todays I kept asking myself, where was your family/friends/partner. Did you ever get any comments about your spending habits?
Anyway, thank you for all of your work, honesty and sharing your love for life! Lots of love, Basia

Your honest descriptions of how you thought about products and rationalized purchases is so helpful. I feel like someone is holding up a mirror to my mindset three years ago. It's an interesting coincidence that my overspending corresponded to the same time period (2017). I have friends who were similarly affected during the same years and I wonder how much RUclips culture of 2016 & 2017 had to do with it? Hard to say, I guess it's different for everyone.

The strenth it takes to face yourself in this way is so admirable. It is what brings about real growth I think. What a great testament to the no buy year and year of less stuff. It shows so much growth. It has made me reflect on my own bad consumer habits. I love each video, but the no buy year series was my favorite because of the reflections and lessons I learned from it. I have been watching your channel for more than a year now, but I have to agree with some of the comments I've read: this series makes something click in my brain that earlier reflections on consumerism (and especially your no-buy year, which I admired but could not really grasp) doesn't. when a person is deep enough in the hole of shopping addiction, the notion of reviewing one's purchase history is the LAST thing one wants to do... but I do think I have the courage to look at it now, thanks to your recent videos. As I listen, I recognize: I allways try to find THAT perfect stuff. In german we call this word by word an „egg delievering milk-wool-pig“. Eierlegende Milch-Woll-Sau. The Sweater /Blush/ Lipstick has to fit to all my situations and moods. For this, you have of course to search an try a lot, necessarily there will be a lot of useless things and purchases, till you found THE ONE. But there are way tooooo many moods and situations. Thats why next day / week / month it starts again, cause my mood , the wheater , the season has changend. Thats an endless vicious circle. And it is much worse, since I try to live minimalistic. All because I am trying to find my self in stuff?!!! Hmmmmmm 🤔

Regarding missing Sephora items. If you go to the “Purchase History” they will have in-store and online purchases, but like people have mentioned sometimes items go missing. However, if you go to “Track Orders” you can view each individual order and nothing is missing, but this only applies to online orders, not in-store. But I think the orders you were unsure about were placed online, so definitely check it out!

This is really brave to put yourself out there like this, as you have done since you started your channel. You inspired me to do my own no-buy year for 2020 and it's HARD but your videos continue to inspire me. For me it's clothes more than makeup but it's not even about the thing, just as you made me realize it's about the hunt, the seeking of the thing that would finally make me totally happy and not think about all the things in my life that were stressing me out. Thanks to your inspiration I've finally had the mental space to examine the causes of my shopping and also address and do something about the things I was trying to keep my mind off of. And the way you haven't rested and you continue to examine your impulses around shopping and the collection of stuff is really healthy and I wish this was more normal in our American consumer culture.

I am really appreciating you sharing this with us. I used to set my alarm for the times when the new Rewards items were posted on Sephora's site, and often order just one small thing like a single sheet mask, just to get the point perks or samples. I just wanted to try as many things as I could and getting something extra was all it took for me to place the order. And just a note, quite often the samples didn't actually come, as they are not guaranteed. Sometimes I would get different ones or none at all, but they still show on your order history as if you got them. (I'm not sure if they will send point perks without an actual purchase unless it's a 750 point item or more...but that may have been different in 2016.) Before the whole RUclips and Sephora days, I would always stock up on Lancome at the department stores just to get the free bonus gifts.

When you talk about your mindset, it almost sounds compulsive, then followed by the guilt. I wonder if you'd feel comfortable talking about whether and how you hid this behavior from the other people in your life. Did everyone know you had a problem? I understand this is an extremely personal topic, so no pressure if you don't feel comfortable.

It’s inspiring to see how far you have come, as well as recognizing similar patterns in my own spending to help me curb my bad patterns of behavior for myself. It was so helpful! Thank you!!!!!! This video has put a lot in perspective for me. I used to be a bit confused when you would mention about the time wasted going to shopping malls bc for me although I feel I spend too much for my own comfort level due to online shopping I didn’t venture out to Sephora often. I see now, how frequently you would physically go to Sephora and the time it had wasted. I say this without utmost respect and understanding! Absolutely no judgment! For me online shopping has its own problems with regards to more frequent returns due to not seeing things in person. I had been doing so well with my spending but quarantine has made me backslide a lot. I am trying to get a handle on it once more and just enjoy what I have. 🙈

Your Sephora history only shows the items from the order *that Sephora still stocks*, at the price Sephora currently lists them. So when I look at the earliest order on mine, there's an order for two samples that I definitely didn't choose, but I know that somewhere in there I bought the KVD Shade & Light palette (because I was sure that I was going to be Someone Who Contours). There's other things I own that are missing from my history, like this little Flowerbomb deluxe sample, so I know the listed purchase history is incomplete. Other items they no longer have (LE, holiday sets) just say that they can no longer be shipped to the US, but they're still listed.
It also lists the samples you requested, rather than what they actually sent. So many perfumes I never got to try...

This video series is so interesting to me. I really got into makeup in 2017 and started building my collection in that year. I'm generally quite frugal and always saw makeup more as a tool for art rather than a treat. I thought you might appreciate my numbers from that year. Based on my inventory at the end of 2018 (numbers may be a little bit off, since I may have decluttered some stuff before the inventory, I also didn't keep track of my mascara purchases) I bought 79 items in 2017 (37 single shadows, 10 lip products, 25 brushes, 7 items in the "anything else" category) for a total of 311€. I also checked my email history to see how many orders I placed:
end of january: Neve Cosmetics (50 items)
end of febuary: bh cosmetics (15 items)
mid april: Lethal Cosmetics (4 items)
end of may: Crow & Pebble (3 items)
mid october: Lethal Cosmetics (2 items)
Black Friday: Nabla (8 items), Beauty Bay (4 items), bh cosmetics (8 items)
I also bought some Essence lipsticks in store, but I don't know when.
I don't keep track of skincare in the same way, but I'm pretty sure I barely used any back then anyway.

i love this series! and i'm curious to know how you think youtube played into all this. were you always one to buy a fantasy as much as a product? or did the stress of 2016 combined with youtube somehow create this issue for you? i know for myself i can say with some certainty that this thing took hold of me in childhood. of course kids want all the toys, but the stuff going on in my family made my home life extremely stressful and i am certain that's when getting a new toy became something to look forward to, something to distract me. thankfully my mother helped keep me in check throughout my life (i always hear her voice questioning my buying decisions), but for as long as i can remember this has been a thing i've dealt with in varying degrees, and it's been so fascinating watching youtube stir up all these issues for people.

What you said about thinking the Roth eye masks would be better because they were expensive really struck me. I know intellectually from Econ classes that the definition of a luxury product isn’t something that’s beautiful or high-quality, just that it’s an item where demand increases as the price increases. But it’s still so easy to fall for that fantasy of something being the best, being a treat, being whatever just because it’s expensive.

Creamy Goodness I think the logic is that if you want use of each item in your life going forward, the eyeshadow only must be purchased once or twice, while the skincare item is repurchased every 2-4 months. So the multiplier is multiplied further each time you buy the item that is designed to be used up and repurchased several times per year.
The yearly cost to buy that marula oil and use it would be almost $500, but the yearly cost of the Tom Ford eyeshadow is $80. Even if she uses both almost daily.

    • @J_Kwan
      @J_Kwan 4 года назад +3

Michelle I think what the original commenter meant was that it’s a comparative difference in spending.
So sure, you can spend $80 on a Tom Ford eyeshadow and use it for two years, or you can spend $5 on a colourpop supershock and use it for two years. Ultimately, it’s just whichever works best for you and your budget.
