The Xbox Block : Emulators and Homebrew in Retail Mode REVOKED! - HM

    Topic: Xbox retail emulation
    Microsoft disabled homebrew and emulators from Retail Users without any warning. They claim to have a supportive position in regard to preserving the history of gaming and seem to be favorable toward emulators, but their current actions say otherwise. Yes, I'm upset with their actions and I believe it's a major step backward for the formerly all-in-one device.

    "Just use dev mode bro."

      I initially thought it might have something to do with the 360 emulation advancing and allowing people to play games that were currently for sale in the store... but I think that was also disproven somewhere (maybe twitter).
      I really think it has something to do with the Activision deal - regulators from all over the world are taking a close look at everything Xbox and I'm guessing someone found this and MS made the decision to lock it behind dev mode to appease some regulatory body.

    I put my Xbox Series S in offline mode & quickly "forgot" my network connection so my Retail Mode emulators continued working. Negative part being obviously I can't use online, download any more games, etc. But I'm irritated enough over it that I outright refuse to get back online and give any more money until they bring back access. At least the new Goldeneye release still plays in my console for now, idk if it will stop over time. I have 3 years of Game Pass pre-paid as of April 2nd so hopefully worst case scenario it carried over my Game Pass sub end date. Idk if I want to get Dev Mode as it seems to have quite a few drawbacks and I kind of feel like keeping it with the Retail UWP apps could make it a unique system to keep in this state if they never do end up bringing back that access.

      That would be quite a turn of events to see, although they have done an excellent job of securing their consoles since the XB1 so it will be quite a task to pull off and may take awhile if possible. I will say that my Series S still fully works w/ the Retail Mode apps because I unplugged my modem before booting it up. One of the reasons given by a supposed Xbox employee was "Additionally, we take security seriously, and some emulators require permissions beyond what is typical for an app. This could create a potential security risk, as these permissions can be exploited by bad actors to gain access to sensitive information." And this to me sounded like maybe they found that it could cause an exploit in Retail Mode. I may be far reaching here but that would be interesting to see.

    I feel kind of insecure in Xbox or consoles in general now really. Doing all these things about emulation is neat but once you revoke the access to them, once you have already downloaded them is nuts. They can do it with whatever game probably if they feel the need to.
    Now, my theory is that they're trying to fix the mess that was to get these emulators. Putting something clean, simple and done with the helps of the devs. Working with the law or what not to get these emulators in the store without legal restriction (which shouldn't be any). That's just my theory if Nintendo wasn't actually the one to blame this time.
    But, I'll always stick with my PC for emulation purposes and everything DRM-Free.

  • @coffee7180
    @coffee7180 7 месяцев назад

    P eople forget that you can still play a lot of classic xbox games on xbox series right now, the problem is from a legal standpoint letting people play games from other company's can be a big risk for xbox.
    What is xbox going to do if all those other companies ask for emulation compensation, the risk is just too high.

    To anybody who has lost their access to the UWP apps and still didn't uninstall them, are you able to access them in offline mode? Or are there any of the UWP apps that you did not try opening yet after one or more of the other apps lost access? If so, could you try opening those in offline mode and see if it will then work? I'm just wondering if you can still access the retail mode apps if you didn't open them yet and first put console into Offline Mode before opening for the first time Post-ban? My console was actually set to "Always On" when this ban happened (so theoretically it should have download updates while sleeping since it doesn't fully shut down) but after finding out I turned it on a day or two later while making sure I unplugged my internet router, then putting it in Offline Mode and forgetting my access point. All of my emulators still work and I am sure they will keep working as long as I don't get on the internet anymore.

I would like to be able to go online and fully use it again at some point but at the same time I have a good gaming laptop and Steam Deck here to hold me over. I'm having a hard time with having enough motivation put it back online and continuing to put any more money into the console because I'm irritated about it tbh. At least the new Goldeneye port still works in it for now 👍

    This isn’t the answer, but I could see that the reason they did this was with the recent Xenia emulation addition to the series s/x. I’m sure even with support of old games having been stopped, they still want to get sales on rereleases etc.
    however, to only target that one emulation may bring Nintendo and Sony to start something as Microsoft prevented their games being emulated, but are allowing their competitors games to be.
    Now, still stupid since you would think they would still earn more as not that many actually emulate
