I have 2 Gen 1 homepods paired up to my projector. They honestly sound pretty good. I would compare it to a decent sound bar/subwoofer setup. Was excited to see the gen 2 announced but the paper specs seem disappointing. It would be awesome if apple allowed 4 or more homepods to be connected for a true surround sound experience. I would be interested in that.

If the sound on the second-gen HomePod is anywhere near as good as it was on the first-gen, I'll definitely get one, and preferably 2, for my living room. I literally didn't have the money when the first-gen HomePod was available, but now I can afford one or two. There’s no reason to be worried, really. They downgraded parts that don’t matter so much in order to save costs. What matters is the engineering and speaker driver quality. The common person wouldn’t understand what makes a good speaker driver and the engineering behind speakers bores most people, but that’s all that really matters.
If they really did cut costs all around, including on drivers, then that means we will see aggressive pricing on these in the future.
Having more drivers like they had previously also doesn’t mean that the sound quality suffers. They could have done this for cost reasons, to increase efficiency so they can use a smaller amplifier, or because they needed something to fit a specific space.

I have the mini it’s been quite good for it’s size & price. Love to hear the dormant temp sensor being activated in future update 😅 & like the fact that it has Matter support as the homepod 2. Find it interesting Apple relaunches a product in the first place, but okay, sure. You’d think that they place it as a great home integration with the newest standards. Nope, WiFi 4 & BT 5.0. Yes, it works, but this is a speaker you’d want to use at least 5-10 years. Was considering it, but it’s a pass till the S/plus/pro/3 ultra version ✌️

I have a stereo pair of the gen 2 HomePods. They sound really good, but I can hear some audio trickery going on at higher volume levels. My theory is that they are using smart multi-band compressors. One for bass and one for vocals or any spoken words. Bass sounds nice and full at low and middle volumes and as you turn up the volume past 3/4 the sub bass threshold is maxed out and the highs and mids get more headroom. Upper-mids sound a little harsh at higher volumes too. Overall nice set of speakers, but I agree the price should have been $200-$250 at most. My wish is that Apple would release a decent subwoofer to pair with them to mitigate the physical size limitation of the HomePod. I'd pay $500 for a sub if it had some decent power. Sometimes I want to be able to rattle the walls a little lol. And when I play back some of my favorite music at higher volumes you can tell there is missing low end information. Don't get me wrong these speakers can produce a 50-80hz tone, but the frequency response fluctuates with volume. Which is why I think they are using some kind of smart multi-band compressors tailored to the hardware.

If ppl want a “good” home audio experience, there are real speakers and hi-fi systems to use that blow this away. But if a person wants a convenient and “good enough” home speaker, then it shouldnt be too expensive.

I have two of the OG hompods, linked for stereo sound. They were sold to me as being able to play purchased music from my Itunes library. Three months later, the problems started and when I'd ask Siri to play a song on my homepods, the response would be" I cant find that in your apple music library". It became horribly unfun to use them and now they sit at the back of my tv unused. It was the beginning of the end of my love affair with Apple.

@@phillipbanes5484 Yup! Spent hours on the phone with support, until one day I spoke with an agent who literally said to me "these were always intended to work with Apple Music". Case closed. I'm now on my second pair of Airpod Max. Expensive Crap. Bye Apple.

@@phillipbanes5484 Homepod did play purchases when I first bought it. I was so happy that I ran right out and bought a second one for stereo sound. I could simply ask Siri to play something that I had purchased and bingo....song / artist / album would come on. Sometimes siri would be dumb about it but I could usually find a work around. The reality is, I didn't want to be running down my iphone / ipad battery to airplay music to speakers that were connected to my account and wifi. Good sound was not enough for the fiasco Homepods caused.

@@phillipbanes5484 interestingly enough, I’ve only been using my homepods on shuffle for the past 18 months. That way, I don’t have to be disappointed. All of my purchases are stored on a mac, iphone, ipad and on icloud No reason for Siri to struggle to find anything, but it does. I believe Apple are now charging people to use voice commands with apple music now.

Hi! Can HomePod 2 be paired with the existing HomePod minis?

No only other 2nd gen HomePods. I never rip Apple but this is by far the most pointless “upgrade” unless you just want something for a small living area or office…

You don’t need a homepod to run automations. Are saying that you can tall it to run an automation outside of it’s normal time or trigger?

I purchased it last week. Should be here by the end of next week. Very disappointed to hear about the downgrade on the WiFi. I wonder why that is? Will it matter if I'm in the Apple eco system?

Maybe Ziggy isn't the one with the problem? 😅 Side note: maybe he's also otherwise engaged looking for Sam Beckett. Signed, Friendly Canadian.

I hear a lot of people complaining about Apple using a very old wifi standard. Perhaps I’m missing something here, but what substantive benefits do people think they’d have with the latest wifi standard? To my understanding, it’d be like complaining that it has a “slower” s7 chip instead of the latest M2 processor. More expensive chipsets that would be completely wasted on the product. Streaming lossless audio doesn’t need higher bandwidth. Similar to how a faster cpu couldn’t do anything that the s7 can’t already do in real time.
