  • Today I'm ranking every Disney Live-Action remake that Disney studios has ever made; including Aladdin, Maleficent, Cinderella, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, Cruella, and the Alice in Wonderland movies. I also talk about The Little Mermaid and Peter Pan and Wendy which you know I'm not a fan of. Here is my reaction to all of these movies in a tier list from best to worst.

    I would have put Mulan all the way down, not only for the reasons that you already said... But because it change the true message from the animated: "A woman can do whatever a man can do"... In the live action was like "Only a woman with super powers could do the same as a man"

    • @gunkulator1
      @gunkulator1 Год назад +85

      Mulan in the live action version has no character arc. She doesn't overcome any real obstacles. In the animated version, Mulan is smaller and weaker than everyone else and so needs to find some other way to succeed that does not depend on physical strength. When she finally does, the movie soars, her victory is well deserved and the audience cheers. In the new version, Mulan is already a complete bad ass. The only thing she needs to succeed is for everyone to get out of her damn way. Not very relatable, nor interesting to watch.

      Late, but I want to add that the fact that the animated version also kept the themes of parent-child duty, familial love, honor and humility the original Ballad of Mulan was about, on top of keeping the same ending as the ballad too (aka: Mulan rejects the fame and glory and says she only wants to return home with her family as they were the reason why she did everything in the story in the first place).
      While it's true that the animated version obviously lacks _some_ themes present on the ballad which were important in Chinese culture, the live-action had _none_. Truly worthless and disrespectful in every aspect.

    Cinderella is my favourite remake, based on the fact that it's an actual REMAKE. As in it actually tries to re-do the story in its own way. It isn't a musical, it doesn't rely on nostalgia from the original, and the way it handles the gradual abuse from the step-family is perfect.
    Plus the ball scene if proof that the 'realistic' argument for Little Mermaid is BS. The gold of the palace, the jewel tones of the gowns, and Ella's bright blue that helps her visually stand out is just **chef's kiss**

    Cinderella is a top-tier live action remake that Disney has ever made, it remains faithful to the story and it can still stand on its own and not dependent on the original. yes ofc the plot is predictable cuz its Cinderella everybody knows her rags to riches story. yet the movie stands out among the rest since it pays respect to the original, adding a storyline that the ella and kit met before the ball is chefs kiss cuz it adds depth to the story, "Have courage and be kind" serves as a binder thru out the story, its serves as a weapon. Her childhood with her mother and father binds the story overall. might as well throw the amazing casting and production for extra credit.

    • @gunkulator1
      @gunkulator1 Год назад +3

      Cinderella gets a bad rap because the message does not resonate with people anymore. "Stay Strong and All Will Be Well" is the very essence of a fairy tale, i.e. not realistic at all. We all know far too many people for whom this is not the case. Cinderella has no agency. She does nothing to improve her situation. Everything that happens to her is because of what others do, most notably the Deus Ex Machina fairy godmother. There is limited appeal to the story since it advocates for kindness above all else but everyone who's ever seen it wouldn't have objected if Cinderella had slipped a sleeping draught into her step mother's and step sisters' wine and then slipped off to the ball all on her own. Waiting around for a prince or a fairy godmother is a pretty bad plan.

      @@mintymouths I have pretty much the same opinion. I rate Maleficent 2 lower though. Aurora is character assassinated. I just don't see her betraying Maleficent like that especially right after seeing the cruelty against her in the first one. Everyone wanted Maleficent dead and now that the stakes are lower and she has her prince's love and there's no secrets between them anymore she breaks under pressure? She's been strong willed from the start. She is the princess of the fairies. They are her family and while she'd like her beau's family's approval I don't think she'd be so desperate for it. Ultimately she already has a kingdom and if she wanted she could convince him to live with her as protest because I do believe they'd give in.
      Also to force the rest of the fairies into such an uncomfortable vulnerable position when she knows how scared of humans they are. Like they wanted to support her and she is sheltered but I feel like she'd be more thoughtful about the wedding and the state of the fairies.
      Idk I really didn't like how they went about the second movie and I had hoped they'd cover Aurora trying to get the humans to be friendly to fairies for the sake of peace for both species. Not the royal family only. I expected the royal family to scheme but I hoped Aurora would be more active among commoners to teach them that fairies are friends and then after seeing how the royal family schemed against them they'd revolt and save the fairies and then peace and such.

      In my opinion, 101 Dalmatians & 102 Dalmatians are the only good/great ones.
      (i am not counting Christopher Robin or Pete's Dragon because they are not remakes at all)
      In any how, out of those that came out in the 2010s & 2020s, i would say that Cinderella and Dumbo are the least bad, they are not entirely hatable or awful like some of the other movies, such as The Lion King which do not have any single real thing at all but is entirely CGI made.
      Well, i totally agree with Pinocchio, that movie is easily the absolute worst remake so far, and also one of the worst movies from Disney ever, and one of the worst movies from 2022, one of the worst movies from American movie industri and one of the worst movies ever, and the only Disney live-action remake that i personally HATE.

    Respectfully, I disagree with your placement of Beauty and the Beast. One of my biggest issues with these films is that they add nonsense that adds nothing and actively hinders the stories they are trying to tell. Beauty and the Beast adds an invention subplot that foes nowhere. It adds backstory to Belle's mother to explain where she is because multiple Disney films have actively absent mother figures. Her death is ridiculously contrived to add conflict between Belle and her father which goes nowhere adds nothing and actively halts the plot they are telling. Similarly, the Beast's father being abusive and the cast enabling him is similarly offensive. Just... WHY?!?! Additionally, I despise that it actively tries to explain that this is a fantasy film seemingly only so that clickbait bad-faith film criticism cannot take cheap shots at it (i.e. "I am talking to a candle?" Candelabra, please." And, "Hello. What is your name?" *facepalm* "That is a hairbrush." And many more). Furthermore, the Beast is supremely unlikable, and, due to the fact they added more stakes, actively condemns his entire staff to death through curse-induced actual furniture. Also, one of the things that bothers me is that, in the original, the Beast is just a spoiled brat who doesn't help a beggar woman and leaves her in the cold... you know? What most rich people do and what this child has likely been taught to do as he is *checks watch* 21 and was 11 at the time of his cursing (if my math is correct). While that is screwed up, that is what all fae creature did in the fairy tales which these films are adapting. The problem with aging up the Beast and halting time is that the Beast was a bratty child in the original but in the remake is a grown adult who spends 10 years pouting, knowingly, bringing about rosemagedon. In the original he feels very little need to change because (with the facts as they were) he and his castle will be the same as they have been in the last 10 years. The remake, however, has greater stakes and, therefore, the active participants should feel that gravity. I could go on about this film including talking about how the villagers are terrible, Gaston is a PTSD victim but gets aroused at the thought of violence, the stupid time-space book which is used once for something ultimately inconsequential but not when it should have been (during the actual plot), or even that Disney marketed the shit out of it containing gay representation but refused to include anything substantial enough to warrant such a marketing decision, but I digress. To me, this remake is actively "really bad" and no number of good performances could make up for it. My only other disagreements with this list are Dumbo which I found terrible and uninteresting and Aladdin which was trying to be a Bollywood movie but failed hard, as well as adding in girl-boss Jasmine who is actively silenced after singing a power-ballad about how she "won't be silent" or speechless.

      It's an American production in the English language so that's par for the course. Foreign actors bring an inferior command of English and unwanted accents. Ideally everyone has the same accents or else it's a distraction. You won't find many Cockney, Australian or American Southern accents in films either for the same reason. Upper class British and American Western accents are what you're mostly going to hear unless the film is trying to draw attention to a character being foreign.

    As a fan of American McGee's Alice and Alice: Madness Returns, the Tim Burton movies were great for me, although I agree that the lead actress had no personality whatsoever.
    I'd bump Through the Looking Glass up too, just because although the Mad Hatter stuff was ATROCIOUS, I loved the message regarding how holding on to the past can prevent you from moving into the future. I think at the time the movie came out, I really needed that, so it has a soft spot in my eyes.

      My favorite Alice in Wonderland take was a Syfy mini-series like 12 years ago. It went heavy in "Wonderland is..... wondrously.... dangerous" angle HARD. wonder land in that series was SCARY! But in a way that felt..... real, it wasn't so fantastical you never grasped the danger, in fact it was the opposite. every bit of danger was grounded enough that you could feel the danger. Even magic.... was used in ways that were relatable to RL.

    I don't care. Cinderella 2015 is the only good remake. It doesn't rely on nostalgia, it's a great retelling of the story and doesn't just copy and paste from the original. They add extra scenes that aren't forced and allow Ella to express her kindness and femininity instead of aggressive and "girlboss"ish like the oth3r movies do. It's a classic and it really speaks MAGIC to me.

    If i made the list, i would put Beauty and the Beast in the '' Meh. '' category. The village is pretty and the songs are ok BUT the rest was awful!
    - The magic teleporting book made no sense. Why would the Beast be sad if he can go ANYWHERE in the world? Also, he only uses it one time to talk about Belle's mother then never again. This item was useless 😠
    - The enchantress was a villain in the movie. She didn't helped Maurice when he talked to Gaston and let him be beated by the villagers; that's really cruel, the poor man didn't deserved that. She erased the people's memories, separated families even if they never met her, she turned the prince into a Beast after entering in his castle without his permission. This lady did something impolite and was shocked that he chased her? His reaction was normal! The magician punished him for no good reason and same for his servants.
    - Lumiere and the others looked scary! Ms pots is the worst, her face is huge. They are supposed to be cute and charming, not scary 😕

It was an extremely flawed film narratively and tonally. Also I’m sure some people don’t care as much but there were many technical errors in the film as well including sound and continuity. Film felt very rushed and like a cash grab. Only good thing I can say is that Emma Stone tried despite the awful script and some of costumes and set looked nice.

    I would put 101 and 102 dalmatiens at the top personally, probably 102 in a tier on its own. I believe that’s the best version of cruella and we get to see a side of her we haven’t before plus it feels more true to the animated movie despite going in its own direction. For the face that cruella cannot live up to those standards I would put her 2 tiers below 102 dalmatiens. Live action is when you use actual animals in the movie not just CGI them in. It just makes the movie more believable and the whole point is to make the movies feel like you could have been the passer by outside, a lot more closer to our world rather than the fantasy settings of animation.

    Cinderella is the only good one because it's the only one that justifies it's own existence. It feels like a new version of Cindy without crapping on or misunderstanding the story. You could watch this one or the original animated movie and get a good experience from either one. They both have strengths and flaws distinct from each other. I feel like if you took the first movie's Cindy, Stepmom and sisters, general style and music and combined it with the remake's prince, king, mice and pacing and put them together, we'd have an ideal Cinderella film.
    Also, I kinda like Tim's Alice. It's nowhere near the quality and fun of the og animated movie, but it is kinda fun.

    I understand why people thought the live-action Mulan was bad, but people forget that this movie pulled more of the lore from the legend than the original did. In the original, Mulan disguised herself to take her injured dad’s place in the war against the Huns. In the legend (and the live-action film), the leader of the Huns was assisted by a witch named Xiannang, whereas the Huns take center stage in the animated one.

The remake radomly has slapped on western culture for some reason, chinese culture doesn't really have witches it has possesed spirits and her powers in the film are stuff that is but the term witch isn't. OG Mulan did have inaccuries as well but the errors are either minor visuals where they had things not finished in post or they didn't visit a house or they did something like the hair cutting scene where it was done for a narative reason

      Hollywood needs to be done with the trope of the 90lb pixie girl beating up a bunch of 220lb men. It is not and has never ever been realistic. The whole point of the animated Mulan was that she turned the notion of brute strength dependence on its head. Both The Huns and The Chinese could not think outside the box of slugging it out toe to toe with each other. Mulan figured out how to defeat the enemy without this. Necessity being the mother of invention for sure but she was still the only one to apply wisdom of Sun Tzu to the battlefield. "Every battle is won or lost before it is ever fought."

    To this day I actually kind of hate the Maleficent movie. Don't get me wrong, the christening scene is fantastic....but that's it. Because that's the only time we get the actual Maleficent. She's one of my favorite Disney villains because of how so joyfully evil she is. Of all characters to turn into an antihero, the one that cursed a baby with death because she wasn't invited to a party shouldn't have been at the top of the list.
    Cinderella I found kind of unbearable but it pretty much stayed in line with the tone of the original story, so I can forgive it. But lemme tell you, Cate Blanchet as Lady Tremaine was the biggest letdown. I was so excited for her casting and couldn't wait to see her take on the character, but everything that made Lady Tremaine intimidating in the original movie was just gone. Nothing about the live action version felt right to me. She was almost too playful and unserious.
