    Your Dad knows his stuff. A very informative video for new beekeepers. I just use a 3/4 inch starter strip of wax foundation in the top of the frame with fishing line for support and let the bees draw their own comb. I can do 10 frames with starter strip from one sheet of wax foundation without the wires. Go to the oops shelf in the paint department, you can get the sample 1/2 pints for $.50 if you're not particular about the color. You can get free shipping from Mann Lake with orders over $100.00.

    Thank You! There is a lot of great information here - especially with staying within a small budget. That’s helpful because too many videos on RUclips are about people spending a LOT of money buying tons of stuff, or building everything from scratch - which requires to the tools and skills of a cabinet maker. You are doing a smart thing by buying boxes and frames from Mann Lake and saving $ by building the cover and base.

    • @notafuckinpplperson8233

      plastic does work if you coat them good with wax. also the main reason i like plastic is to help stop the beetles/mites from going frame to frame so easily. they can't go through plastic like they can with wax foundation. if they need to move, they have to go around. going around they will get fucked with by the bees more.

    I love this video but I am concerned about the OSB. This wood chip board has many chemicals and will off-gas for years. I know it is a bit more expensive to buy higher quality wood but isn't that better for bee health? Are you not worried about these chemicals in the cheap glues? We will be building hive boxes very soon and I really appreciate the detailed instruction!

    • @AnnaKra

      Sorry for the late response. You are right, we make sure the treated side is towards the outside. Also, this video is for people who can't afford the more quality wood. Better quality wood is always, always a good idea. Thanks for watching. :)

    When I do have to feed my bees, I make the sugar syrup and I also add chamomile I grow organically, to the nectar as it helps protect against varroa mites. Have you or your father tried this method? Instead of having to by varroa mite medication. Thank you again😊

    • @AnnaKra

    Hello. I'm about to get some bees here next 10 days and been watching videos on bees like crazy. Your channel was reccomened today and you guys give out a lot of great great tips and information. Everyone I watched so far says you have to place the bee hive entrance towards the South. Your dad says to place towards the east, can you explain why East? Thank you ahead! :)

    • @AnnaKra
      @AnnaKra  5 лет назад +1

      Hi! This is a great question! My dad said, that the Russians have experimented with this and have documented that placing the hive towards the east gives you a few advantages. One, east is where the sun rises, therefore the entrance warms up first, the bees from this hive start working earlier, up to two hours earlier than the hives that are placed towards the south. One or two hours every day can add up quick. Therefore, they should bring more honey. He extracts up to 3 gallons of honey per hive, per year. Second, facing the hive towards the south during the summer days is not a good idea. Most part of the day the sun shines from the south, this may over heat the entrance for the bees, and the bees have to ventilate more, work harder to keep the hive a certain temperature for the brood. He has read this experiment in a Russian magazine and ever since then he has put all his hives towards the east and it has worked for him for many years. If you have found a different kind of research, please post here. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching and commenting! :)

  • @tomcrynock37
    @tomcrynock37 5 лет назад +1

    Great video. I have a couple of questions. I noticed the holes for the bees to access. Does it help with the hive beetles? Also does it allow good ventilation?

    • @AnnaKra
      @AnnaKra  5 лет назад +1

      My dad said, he doesn't think it will help with the hive beetles. He uses the inner cover with the screen as shown in the video to ventilate the hive. That should be plenty of ventilation for the bees! The screen on the inner cover easily passes air in and out. Most tops/roofs for beehives are not tightly sealed on to the hive and have small holes in the wood where air passes through easily. Also, we suggest making one entrance hole on the second deep super (one should be plenty on the second deep super additional to the bottom entrance holes) for even better ventilation. If bees don't need that hole they will cover it up with propolis! Hope this helps! Thank you for watching and commenting!

    Is your channel more along the lines of *beekeeping*? Or is it more like a general self sufficiency / homesteading channel?

    Another suggestion, Anna, perhaps you can do it if you want to grow your audience. I don't know if you are familiar with the CRAZY RUSSIAN HACKER - he's got a very large audience on internet. And for the last 2 years he's been trying to beekep without much of a success. Who knows if you reach out to him (he seems very friendly online) and, being your father also russian, perhaps he'd be interested in featuring you two in his channel or something like that. Just an idea. Hope your channel grows and you keep the videos coming!

      @AnnaKra  5 лет назад +1

      Yeah, I’m subscribed to him! I wish lol. I want to grow a little more! Before I reach out to collaborate. Thank you, great advice! Keep it coming :)

    Lovely video, as you point out it would be very easy to spend hundreds of dollars to start beekeeping. I have been considering starting for a few years now and have been trying to contact the local beekeeping association this year without success, broken email link.
    At what point in the year would your father suggest it is too late in the year to acquire a nuc and start the process?

    • @AnnaKra
      @AnnaKra  5 лет назад +2

      No, it's not too late! May is still a good month to start. Some people start during the summer and some even start in fall. He recommends starting in springtime! I'm happy to hear this! Thank you for watching! You will like part two, It's coming out soon!

      @@AnnaKra thank you for the quick response, it is encouraging that I have time to start this year. The first video of yours I watched was how to get bees to build honeycomb faster, then this one, I have not seen the subject covered elsewhere. In looking at the playlist I see a video titled Best time to start Beekeeping, I will watch it now it might have saved me asking the question and taking up your time!
      The local beekeepers association seems to have a very structured calendar with classroom lectures starting in February and hands on experience starting beginning of May, I have managed to find an email link that appears to work so hopefully I can talk to local keepers as well as follow on videos, with thirty years experience your father is worth listening to and I like his accent and approach.
