I purchased the Women's Capsule Wardrobe from Unbound Merino and I was very happy to discover Merino Wool clothes.
Watching this three years later, KUIU has the Pro Merino line which is a blend of merino wool and synthetic fibers. I wonder what changed the minds of the KUIU product designers. Maybe the popularity of the Apex Hoody that Sitka makes? Maybe more research done on blends? I also wonder if the blends will become staples or if they’re just a trend to cut costs because of the price of wool.

This is great information. I don't often hear honest discussion about the wet sheep smell of Merino when it gets wet. When I bought my first few pieces, I didn't see that smell coming, and I thought it was a quality issue. This is just about the only place I've heard an open admission that the smell is simply a property of Merino that you must accept and deal with. I love my Merino, but still don't love the smell when it's wet.
100%! I learned that quickly on a 7 day backpack hunt. I had two wool pieces and one synthetic base layer. I wore the one synthetic the last 4 days straight with no issue.
How can synthetic possibly wick moisture. No one can explain that. It’s plastic man made fibers. It can’t possibly have the ability to wick anything. It dries quick because it can’t actually get wet. It’s just moisture on the surface or moving through it’s pores that can then evaporate, but everyone I know gets clammy feeling in synthetic and it’s because you are putting a garbage bag essentially on your body with tiny holes in it. Wool, is actually pulling moisture off of your skin, and is breathable and insulating. Millions of years of evolution vs 50 years of plastics industry. I think it is all hype. If a cheap synthetic t-shirt from Walmart isn’t as good as a natural fiber one and makes you feel hot and sweat more, how can the same materials in outdoor clothing all of a sudden be better. I will go wool all day unless I need a wind breaker or rain prevention. Then I’ll put that over my wool. I don’t trust the synthetics at all and especially would never put poly underwear on when it’s basically proven to keep toxins from leaving your body effectively, hence it’s infamous odor.

@@ericgardner7579 yeah. The outdoor industry has a lot of fancy names for materials that you can define simply as plastic. Which is obviously much cheaper than wool and silk and alpaca etc. Definitely seems like a marketing thing to sell you cheap material for an insane price.

Evaporation is always an endothermic reaction, it takes energy, thermal energy to be precise, from its environment no matter the conditions, simple physics. I had wet merino on my skin on cool nights and it wasn't like warming at all.

Right. Evaporation is a great way to dump heat but never the converse. Good podcast otherwise.

Have you ever been in a wet wet suit on a cold day? Evaporation has nothing to do with it but the wet wool can still keep you warmer .. than wet skin

I have always loved my merino wool base layers but after watching this I am going to give KUIU synthetics a try for my next Alaska moose hunt. Thank you all for this very informative podcast I learned allot.
I’d like to know what Kuiu uses for an anti microbial. I found that Sitka uses Silver Chloride. Is Kuiu’s better?

When I use all synthetic builds lot of static electricity when you get in and out of vehicle you get shocked.

I think the confusion about wool being a wicking fiber is that it is both repellant and resistant to moisture. The wet sheep smell is from the lanolin, which helps keep the moisture from seeping in, but once it does seep into the fiber it still feels dry. I have a feeling when you say "merino" what you actually mean is Superwash, which isn't the same.
Also, merino isn't the only type of wool 😅 merino is soft, but there are many other kinds of wool that offer different properties. It's also important to know that superwash wool is not going to be the same as natural, untreated wool. Yes, it's more work to hand wash, but real wool has much nicer properties than superwash.
Good info. Is wool doable as a t-shirt in summer, and does light color show sweat/attract stains?
@@superseiyan I backpacked with a merino shirt in summer, like it better than synthetic but does show sweat...didn't stain.
@@superseiyan it's disaster , it's made so weak after one day of hiking holes in it . cotton is 10 times stronger , and cheap . polyester is great , cheap and durable , but cotton is stronger fiber , not more durable , but stronger . I have Nike cotton shorts for running , they are as new after 7 yrs . polyester won't do it , it would be little holes in it , but it if you repair it , it can last for 100 yrs . which I don't like , I like to use stuff for 4,5 yrs as plastic - polyester stuff and give to someone or throw it if nobody won't accept it . cotton is different story , I like it after many yrs , it's natural stuff and I feel great in it .
for rain 100 % polyester is great , for dry wheather nothing can be better than cotton . for cold wheater acrylic shines , it's THE strongest fiber , it's THE warmest fiber , it's THE fastest fiber to dry , it's cheap , has great colors . polyester is the best for socks and shorts , cotton is great but it will not prevent blisters and problems . wool is just too weak socks from 100% wool break first day , expensive one from scandiavian army , don't buy it waste of money .

KUIU and/or Sitka, considering who Jason was and who he was affiliated with.
He is talking about how Toray, the japanese company that makes their fabrics, developed a technology (MAKSPEC ODOR CONTROL) that kills bacteria and he is using it is some of his company's (KUIU) products
Like others said, he’s talking about the synthetic shirts kuiu makes. But in practice either Sitka or kuiu synthetic base layer shirts would both work. It’s not miracle, but it is expensive. We talking about $100+ for a lightweight long sleeve t-shirt!

Something that has always driven me NUTS about synthetic is the damn smell. I sweat a lot also and bought a KUIU peloton base earlier this year and guess what? The funk is here to stay. I wish there was a way to keep the smell away from synthetics. But I did however wear it for early hunts over merino. I'll have to replace it next season and give it a go more towards colder hunts. KUIU nation for sure. Love these guys

Try washing with Defunkify detergent. Use it in all of my activewear layers!

what is the a ultimate material of these two or any other for helping me stay cool on long motorcycle rides? It’s hot and humid here which is a combination of the situations you described.
If wearing on outside by itself, merino wool would be better cuss it keeps you cool. If wearing under other clothes like the motorcycle jacket, synthetic would be better cuss it wicks and dries faster.
@@00ninja00 can you clarify “outside by itself” ? Does that mean don’t wear it over synthetics and such?
@@Fee.1 meaning if you’re wearing this shirt by itself with nothing on top of it like a motorcycle jacket. Just this shirt alone on your body while riding motorcycle, then merino is better.
If you want to wear a motorcycle jacket and wear shirt under your motorcycle jacket, then synthetic is better, 100% polyester.

It’s physically impossible for evaporation to warm you or create heat.
Heat is dispelled by the process of evaporation thus cooling the skin, it doesn’t matter what fabric you ware, this law of physics can’t reverse itself as much as some clothing manufacturer may wish .
By holding the moisture and your body heat and the heat generated while you're moving around creates barrier therefore trapping heat in that situation. It's not evaporation, but heat/humidity effect. This is in a dry and cool environment. When in a hot/ dry environ, that moisture wants to evaporate and thus cools you.

Not all merino wools are built the same. I can show you some road cycling 100% super fine merino wool products that are 6 years old, zoomed it to show how the quality had stood up.

You can buy a good synthetic base layer for a few bucks, a merino is pretty expensive, i.ve worn both and prefer the cheap baselayers....synthetic
Someone please make a baselayer out of 50% PrimaLoft silver yarn, 25% Merino wool and 25% Alpaca. I will buy at least 5 tops and bottoms thanks in advance.

wool dries and evaporates slowly, therefore doesnt feel as cold when it dries as a synthetic which evaporates quickly. evaporation cools you down period, what matters is how much moisture is stored in the garment and how quickly it can dry

Seemed an odd thing to say, what he should have referred to is heat of adsorption. That is the heat generated when water vapor is adsorbed by a fiber. Look up, heat of adsorption.
Boondoggle You are correct
Don't be afraid of a damp base layer as long as it isn't a 100% cotton it'll dry in 3 hours
provided a good shell jacket and that most people can't run a non stop marathon on a hike.
The benefit of letting the base layer be damp is that the body sweats less ( = less water to carry )
and that's why a cotton/lyocell mix with synthetic or merino is the best option for next to skin.
For professional runners a 100 % synthetic is the best option
but you don't need this for hiking
because it's about living in Nature and not just powering through it like a bulldozer.
I agree with Jason about base layers but if you slow down before setting up camp
there is plenty of time for a merino base to dry while wearing it.
Middle layers in merino are heavy but also more resistant to winds if they are worn under a shell.
If you don't have a shell ? then a synthetic middle layer is miles ahead
but any "soft shell" solution should be avoided on a multi day hike.

Delete this video from RUclips, please! The guy to the right don’t know what he is talking about, at times:
1: Evaporation does not in ANY WAY make you warmer. If the moisture from the baselayer is evaporating 80% of the energy is drawn from your body, 20% from the enviroment (like if you place a soda can with a wet rag around, in the sun. The soda gets cold while the water is evaporating).
When the water on tye outer layer is evaporating, 20% of the energy is drawn from your body and 80% from the enviroment.
This is why a emergency bivybag should NOT be breathable, to stop evaporation.
And also, all materials dry at a equal rate. It is the amount of water in the garment that decides wich garment is dry first.
This is facts…
