      cool fight scene with no character development just cool lightsaber swingin' > almost an entire movie dedicated to luke's personal failures, challenges, legend, & coping with that responsibility by saving the entire galaxy.
      ok

    • @brendondellinger355
      @brendondellinger355 3 года назад +311

      @@hikkikimori I'd rather have a respectable character stay the same than treat them like absolute trash.
      There were a million and one directions Luke could have gone in The Last Jedi, and Ryan chose to make him a sad, pathetic, shriveled old man who goes against everything he stood for since the last time we saw him.
      If you like what they did with him that's fine, it's your opinion. But I'll never understand the purposeful decision to turn one of the most beloved heroes in cinema into an unlikeable individual.
      It didn't fit the story or Luke's character and it felt more like Ryan just wanted to make his mark on Star Wars history and peace out.
      Might as well have Batman murder people and Superman give up on humanity. Or Spider-Man say screw responsibility and Wonder Woman wage war on humans.
      It's not so much what they did with him that annoys me but the fact there was so much they could have done instead. Ryan seemed so satisfied with a 50% rating from fans and was happy with that rating. If I took over a big name project and pissed off half the fanbase with my decisions I wouldn't be calling what I did, "Brave" or "Daring" I'd see that I made a mistake somewhere that took something away from a lot of people.
      As for the Last Jedi, sure they touched on all these bad things that happened to him but that's just it. They touched on it. Maybe with some more screentime I could understand Ryan's decision to make Luke so bitter but it's like, "BOOM my nephew must die because bad thoughts." It gets explained later on that Palaptine was influencing them and some crap but at that point it's obvious they were backpeddling to save some random "cool" decisions Ryan made for the franchise without thinking about the future.
      Like I said, if you like it, cool. I'm glad it make somebody happy. But for the love of the Force at least recognize the Disney trilogy was a trilogy that could have had a little more thought put into it. Avatar is my favorite movie and even I can admit it's got some issues (like why don't they nuke them from space).
      Anyways, that's my neckbeard Star Wars rant over. Happy holidays.

    • @hikkikimori
      @hikkikimori 3 года назад +21

      @@brendondellinger355 haha true, people do have varying opinions on luke in tlj. i'm glad you expressed what you thought was wrong with him. while i don't agree, it's nice to see you don't simply want a lightsaber-wielding badass john wick murderer, cutting down stormtroopers left and right because a large amount of people want that & that's what i take issue with. jedi use their abilities only for defense, never attack. i loved what luke did in tlj because he saved the entire galaxy, upheld his status as a legend & took on the entire first order without taking a single life except the self sacrifice of his own. love it.
      as i said, however you feel about luke is cool whether it's positive or negative or whatever, nice to see you put some thought behind it rather than surface-level "badassery" or not. happy holidays

The badassery/nostalgia when you realize it's Luke. I can't hold back the tears when Grogu wants to see Din's face and he reveals it in front of everyone. This episode can definitely compete as some of the best television in history, in my opinion. I'm not even a huge Star Wars fan but this finale was simply exquisite. Very well done John and Dave.

They even managed to make a SW movie flop on this day and age. People were excited that star wars was back, then many realized where it's going and gradually started to turn away. Let's hope this will bring them back. Disney trilogy made new fans sure but those do not tend to stay around for long with so many other "exciting,fresh and new" things coming out all the time.

Like you said, by that point many people just went to see how it ends, the same people (myself included) that went to see TFA multiple times, not necessarily because it was good but it was a return of star wars. The whole brand I feel like has lost a lot of momentum and just excitement and I wonder if that can truly be brought back through tv shows. luke's greatest victory was throwing away his lightsaber at the end of return of the jedi & refusing to fight his father.

      Doesn't even need to be badass.
      He needs to be who he is. The symbol of hope, the most hopeful character ever, the Superman of Star Wars. He can have doubts, but in the end he was right - he has challenges, but he can overcome them. He can inspire others - he can save those who cannot even be saved...
      Sure I'd definitely like a stylized action scene here and there to showcase his mastery of the force and his own abilities, but ultimately, I want Jedi Master Luke, the beacon of Hope and optimism

      @@ProtoMarcus you don’t think that’s unrealistic? i’m not trying to be mean or anything, just talking, but i’d much rather a human luke than a “superman” luke because being human is what makes great protagonists relatable. no one is superman in real life. everyone is human & has flaws & failures. being able to relate to luke on those levels makes him a hero because he’s not superman who can do no wrong. superman has never been relatable as a hero because no one on earth is as perfect as him. it’s boring. also, luke was never as you described. he complained & gave up constantly in the og trilogy. just off the top of my head; refusing to go to alderaan with ben, getting frustrated while trying to find yoda and yelling“what am i even doing here”, failing to lift the x wing & saying “what you ask for is the impossible”, & actively trying to kill vader during their fight (when he’s succumbing to the dark side at the end there) while fully knowing there is still good in him. & all of these things are great because luke is human & we feel the same way as him sometimes.
