Melle Mel of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five added some lyrics to the song "The Message" but was not the primary writer: Edwin "Duke Bootee" Fletcher, a member of Sugar Hill Records' house band, wrote most of the lyrics in 1981. Jiggs Chase also co-wrote the song.
