Melle Mel of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five added some lyrics to the song "The Message" but was not the primary writer:
Edwin "Duke Bootee" Fletcher, a member of Sugar Hill Records' house band, wrote most of the lyrics in 1981. Jiggs Chase also co-wrote the song.

Melle Mel didn't write The Message! He only wrote the last verse. He didn't write Survival, or New York New York either.

Really! Man very interesting! A bit shocking! Did the late COWBOY have a major part of the writing?

@quasi-human3456 thank you sir I totally forgot about that brotha, as well as the talented significance of the others in the group ! Personally even as a 10 year old kid when the message came out COWBOY was my favorite outta the group, and had super powerful social COMMENTARY on his verses to ✊🏿

@quasi-human3456 exactly, you know. Super rapping was on Enjoy before they got Sugarhill established. I know Duke Bootee, from Elizabeth NJ. I met him through DJ Cheese. RIP Not only did Duke write the lyrics. That's his voice on the record. When you see Rahiem on the videos. He's lip syncing! That's Duke and Melle Mel on all 3 records.
