As a fully grown adult, even a 30lb draw is significant. Full English warbows were sometimes 160+lb draws, I can't imagine the strength needed to draw those. Hell, everyone things archery requires nimblnesss and dexterity (thanks RPGs and high fantasy literature) but the one attribute that defines archery is strength.
It can. Sometimes slivers of feather can get stuck in your hand, but that's generally when shooting off of your hand, and even then doesn't happen often. There are bow gloves to prevent that. Even worse though, is if you are shooting an arrow that is damaged. The arrow can explode on release, sending shards of it through your hand. Seems to be more prominent with carbon arrows though because it's harder to detect damage.
I know musket technology was the way forward but I get the sense a company of long-bowmen could decimate a company of line infantry. with a greater amount of firepower
"Simple yew" ! Well , to me it's no simple yew but a wonderful perfect stave of a noble wood , I spent weeks looking for such one in Brittany , found one that is no match but works halfway well ... are such bows available in the UK , can they be shipped to France? thanks for the video !
well they wear protection for your bow arm because sometimes the arrows whips against the inside of your out streched forearm. one thing you do need to be weary of is arrow length. and arrow to short for you has the chance of skewering your bow hand when you try to let it off. other than that your pulling hand really has no reason to be hurt, they use some leather on your pulling fingers so your not just pulling with your skin against the string.
It may not be sound effects. Sensitive mics can pick up a lot more noise than we hear. I shoot longbows and have some medieval arrows spined at 55#. They have larger fletchings but are only 4" long and my bow is 52#. My arrows make that noise as they fly only not so much. We must remember Kevin is shooting a 90# bow and his fletchings on his arrows are 7" plus they are whipped on and that would catch the air too so they would make quite a sound. Spectators say they can hear my medieval arrows whooshing past and I hear it as the arrows leave the bow. I only get this noise with my medieval arrows though. My normal arrows are silent in the air. Dave.
You make a linen string the same way you make a modern string really, flemish or even endless loop if you felt like it. Never tried a linen endless loop though. Made 100s of linen flemish strings though.
No. it had no shelf. Like the turkish bow, yumi bow, mongolian bow, there were no arrow rests. Some did have a strike plate on the side that they did shoot with! To compensate for the lack of arrow shelf they canted the bow at an angle.
Karasu True and faster training time also has greater range. I guess I have a romanticized view of highly trained Bowmen with great tactics manhandling some musket men.
78FrozenCats It really depends on which age you are talking about, because while muskets were definitely much more powerful, loading them was considered dangerous, and took much longer compared to a bow. Not to mention they aren't as accurate since they had smooth chambers rather than the bore chambers of guns just after the civil war period. That being said though, while I am an obvious fan of the bow, I do appreciate the musket as the origin of the modern weapons that we have in the world today.
I hate when they mount this hissss sound on arrow launch, pretty mediocre effect if u ask me. I have high performance high speed modern compound bows and crossbows in excess of 300 FPS and they are silent killers. Lame...
The longbow was definately not the machine gun of its day. They had a large crossbow that they put several arrows into that fired through small holes in doorways or walls.
Hmm 200-300 meters. Unlikely I think. The furthest distance shot in modern target archery is normally 90 meters. Olympic bows are normally 50-60 lbs instead of 120-180lbs, however modern recurve bows will be much more efficient than longbows, and shoot much lighter arrows, so you would likely get similar effective range. Also in clout shooting (getting closest to a target on the ground) the furthest distance is 185 meters. Even if you can loose an arrow 250 meters with a longbow, your chances of hitting anything at that range becomes pretty remote
The point is that there's hundreds of them arrows going towards a wall of men, if only 50 hit, that's 50 who are useless now. More if the surrounding soldiers stop and help, which they will.
go to you tube, type in Mughal bow, in the video, they test the Longbow vs. the Mughal bow, the Mughal bow penetrated much deeper, The Yumi bow is more accurate and penetrates deeper.
That video did not give the draw weight of either bow which matters, and no bow is more accurate than another it depends on the shooter. The only definitive thing you can say is that those bows would be more effective on horseback because they are shorter.
Historically the Yumi, Mongol and Mughal bows had a lower draw weight to the Longbow and that matters when we are dealing with penetration and on foot composite bows offer no advantage over longbows. Composite bows were also not very durable as they would fall apart in wet climates, that's why they were not popularly used in Europe other than for crossbows.
I call bullshit! Kevin handed Dan a WARBOW ... 90lbs now unless dan is either a professional rower, swimmer or archer no normal man would be able to draw that bow easily like he did
Galan L they are the same generic stock soundbits, not at all matching the audio situation on screen and recorded with other noises on the program and were even off in regards of timing.
No not really. The avg poundage on the longbows to come off the Mary Rose were 100-ish, with 80lb bows being at the lowest end and 150s on the highest.
USMarineRifleman0311 That was found in mary rose in 1510. In 1510 was abandoned medieval heavy armour style so big draw weights was not needed. In Edward III. period was nesesary to penetrate heavy armour so big draw weights was required from longbowmen. Edward III. did not hire the Archers who were under 100lbs of draw weight. Every single Longbowmen was paid according to his skills and the draw weight of his bow. The more draw weight of bow was, the more salary he had.
Emmet Byrne NO he isn't the hand bows from the Mary Rose ship were up to 160-200lb draw weight, just because YOU couldn't imagine pulling that with 1 arm, remember these children started practising (as it was LAW to) from very early ages. The Welsh bow men as adults had 1 side of body much more developed with larger pulling muscles on their drawing arm/shoulders. WHY we were such a top rated soldier, we could fire 12-16 arrows per minute aimed. With ability to cause serious problems for the horses & knights on top of them. They also had perfect technique, they didn't so much Draw the bow, but pull it apart with back/shoulders/arms from within the bow as it was so large. They had 20 yrs and more of Experience, not to win a medal, to win the battle.
PYakMan1 No Im not. There was not a single bow found on the Mary Rose of 200lb in draw weight. It was a 100lb spread from a low of 80 and a high of 180 with the median in the 140-160 range. Also stop using assumptions as arguments. What we know about human psychology regardless of the reward and punishment mechanisms (extra pay and archery law)is that people generally do as they please today and they likely did back then. No amount of punishment deters criminal behavior. Incentive also encourages people to cut corners. Do you want someone 600yrs from now to assume we were the most law abiding people in history simply because we have a law forbidding virtually everything? My background: BA in Criminology with a minor in Psychology.
I love this dude. I'm constantly searching for more Kevin Hicks videos.
Kevin's living in Canada now but is back on RUclips again with more history & archery .... ruclips.net/user/thehistorysquad 😉
@@thehistorysquad Hell yeah! Thank you!
Sorry, but these ridiculous sound effects makes this video silly at best. Kevin Hicks is a great historian
The sound effects even seemed slow for the arrows release speed, why’d they decide to even add them?
Please stop it with the stupid sound effects.
sounds like from warband.
lol yeah m&b sounds for sure
omg those sound effects
silly isn't it
Kevin Hicks, the man, the myth, the legend🤘🏹
I think Kevin Hicks is in my top ten favorite people

Hell, everyone things archery requires nimblnesss and dexterity (thanks RPGs and high fantasy literature) but the one attribute that defines archery is strength.
Kevin Hicks is such a badass.
I find it somewhat tough to draw my 55 lb bow when I'm out of practice so getting a newbie to draw 90 lb is not gonna happen.
Yeah funny how the camera cuts away every time the host is about to draw...
It can. Sometimes slivers of feather can get stuck in your hand, but that's generally when shooting off of your hand, and even then doesn't happen often. There are bow gloves to prevent that. If you haven't done archery, can't hurt to get into it. Can be expensive getting started, but it's fun.
I know musket technology was the way forward but I get the sense a company of long-bowmen could decimate a company of line infantry. with a greater amount of firepower
I need one of those
Awesome! Thank you.
Poor Dan could barely draw that bow half way :D
Can't blame him though, 90 pound bow is no child's toy
If he isn't an archer, he did bloody well.
those sound effects are fucking lit
"Simple yew" ! Well , to me it's no simple yew but a wonderful perfect stave of a noble wood , I spent weeks looking for such one in Brittany , found one that is no match but works halfway well ... are such bows available in the UK , can they be shipped to France? thanks for the video !
We have them but they cost hundreds, if not thousands. I wish I could point you in the right direction.
yew bows are good but nothing beats magic
runescape oyeah
Arrows are faster than hexes! Or was it a knife? I forgot the quote :(
Nice sound affects

What is that target made out of, and where may i get some?

Dave.
How much training did this guy have with a bow before hand?
His entire life, Kev Hicks is a real lifetime archer.
Interesting long bow
Muito bom parabens
Are those real sounds or added in?
watch?v=EvKJcxa8x_g
it's fake. linked is the actual sound.
What cind of wood is the longbow made of!
Yew wood..Sometime Ash..From the Welsh region/Welsh top archers..
Longbow is crusaders weapon
You make a linen string the same way you make a modern string really, flemish or even endless loop if you felt like it. Never tried a linen endless loop though. Made 100s of linen flemish strings though.
does Kevin Hicks sell longbows?
No. it had no shelf.
Like the turkish bow, yumi bow, mongolian bow, there were no arrow rests. Some did have a strike plate on the side that they did shoot with! To compensate for the lack of arrow shelf they canted the bow at an angle.
Kevin Hicks should be on the title
If I was there learning this I'll be just staring at the guy shooting all his arrow and get the hit and be like
"...O..K.... =I"
i like the sound effects
Which some sound affects were real -_-
What's the expert saying at 00:49?? Too English for my comprehension.
..well,you'd aim at a group of guys...
the best food ever..
Dan Snow, a bastard of the north? (just kidding)
Dude, I was just about to write "Dan Snow, The bastard of winter fell"
stop it with the stupid sound effects!!!
I'd take a longbow and butch of arrows over a musket any day!! I feel like the longbow would have been more effective in some ways.
A musket has much higher punch, though.
Armies armed with muskets consistently beat armies armed with bows.
Karasu True and faster training time also has greater range. I guess I have a romanticized view of highly trained Bowmen with great tactics manhandling some musket men.

I think there was a British general in the early 19th century who recommended that a battalion of longbowmen be raised.
Gosh, why would you need sound effects? The sound produces from shooting from a longbow is beautiful and now the sound effects ruined it!
Swwwwwish badoing!!🏹🏹🏹
Why is everybody bitching about those awesome sound effects
Some Smirkshers and they're done
same here. nice beard by the way. =)
assault rifle of medieval battlefield mate
And if you do that, they will never find your body...
i much prefer a human shaped target .
*arrow noises*
90lb bow... Man that has taken some practice to shoot well. :S
Yeah I know right
Legalus .
I hate when they mount this hissss sound on arrow launch, pretty mediocre effect if u ask me. I have high performance high speed modern compound bows and crossbows in excess of 300 FPS and they are silent killers. Lame...
Not really--so long as you have good form, and that you're aware of what you're doing!
Just my thought as well mate :) just my thought :)
Haha, I know.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Give over. He's got a job to draw breath.Kevin is amazing guy but Dan Snow pulling 90 pound longbow? Clever editing and sound fx.
What the fuck sound effects? Is this Hollywood??
no way that guy can pull back a 90lbs bow
The longbow was definately not the machine gun of its day. They had a large crossbow that they put several arrows into that fired through small holes in doorways or walls.

Well then your going to be very disappointed when I refuse to grant your wish.
0:43 hahahah fake shot hahaha nice discovery
the Japanese Yumi bow and the Mughal bow is much better.
Prove it.

lol i know right i can pull 80lbs not to easy
You know nothing, Dan Snow.
It Looks like Shooting the first time. Rambo's much better. His bow's much cooler.
They are actual sounds, not sound effect.
no no theyre not
What makes you think their not?
Galan L
they are the same generic stock soundbits, not at all matching the audio situation on screen and recorded with other noises on the program and were even off in regards of timing.
Do you even do archery?
Real deadly longbows were 170-200lbs and more pounds. 90 lbs is hunting and practice longbow.
No not really. The avg poundage on the longbows to come off the Mary Rose were 100-ish, with 80lb bows being at the lowest end and 150s on the highest.

you are thinking of the welsh longbows that needed to be anchored in the ground almost.
Emmet Byrne

i think he should see a turkish bow. i'm sure that he'll like it... their ranges are about 500-600 m...
He calls a 90lb bow a full power warbow? bwahaha
Mike Loads shoots an 80lb bow and deems it a heavy bow.
this is a pretty ignorant comment. I blame the Mary Rose.
+GuitarGuy0008 there are people l who do shoot 110-170 English warbows youtube warbow society
My father has vitiligo.
Go hate some where else
OOOOOOOOOOMG wtf is up with the cheap sound effects!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice sound affects
